As I’ve said before, to most RWNJs, “Hispanic” means “Looks like a Southwestern Indian”. If you look like Charo, you’re not going to get asked for your papers. If you look like George Lopez, keep them handy.

I think even some non-RWNJs are confused by the concept of Hispanic too to be honest with you. My grandmother and my mom too were very confused when my SiL told them that her dad’s mother is light skinned. A lot of people don’t understand how diverse a place Latin and South America really is. That’s part of why I took Latin American history. I’ve had so many Hispanic friends and now extended family and I wanted to know more about their history and region.
