I didn’t forget it. For the Reagan Administration the primary enemy was the Soviet Union. Iran had become a enemy in many ways, true, but if things could be set up so that Iran cost Iraq weapons that the Soviets had to resupply not-fully-at-cost, then so much the better in the Reagan Administration’s eyes.
The actions of both the USA and USSR regarding the Iran-Iraq War must be seen in the context of the larger and contemporaneous Cold War.
So, Reagan’s brilliant idea was to give the Soviets a market for arms so they could end up with Iraqi oil?
