They definitely made it all the way west with black folk by LBJs term. My fam’s been eating them in CA and AZ for generations. But maybe Lyndon’s people didn’t get down like that. That’s a loss for sure.
My dad loved grits - and he was born in Los Angeles in the mid-1920’s; by his childhood (early to mid-1930’s), grits had made its way to the L.A. area from Southerners who came to California during the Dustbowl/Great Depression and were becoming part of the local cuisine.
