So who the hell are the people working for Customs that they’ll do this shit without any reservations? How can a whole government division be full of people with no regard for law or basic morality? And why is this reminding me, not so much of Nazis and fascists, as cancer?

Also, simply quitting a job can be very destructive to a person or family. It actually would take quite a bit of strength of character to walk away.

As for a military person the stakes would be higher: the stockade or brig.
