They’re not new. I think they’re just becoming more common. I’ve still got the photos of my own kindergarten graduation somewhere at my mom’s house. Back then, it wasn’t that big of a deal. We had paper caps and mortarboards with ribbon tassles, and after it was over the school fed everyone cupcakes.
It’s supposed to reflect a kid moving up to “real” school. These people were just petty douchebags who let their personal problems ruin a benign event.
I think it’s an attempt to highlight the ‘importance” of school at an early age. Something which wasn’t as necessary in “my day”.
