I don’t remember what that law was. Used to be something like carrying the rifle in the trunk unloaded. Back when we had a motorhome my father would bring along a 12 ga. shotgun and a lever action 30/30 inside the motorhome. Don’t remember if they were always loaded but the ammo was always close at hand. We lived in NJ and even drove through Illinois with that. ;)

Illinois isn’t too bad anymore. If your firearm is in a locked case with the ammo separate, you won’t get in trouble here. You do need a Firearms Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) to own a gun, but my state doesn’t have the transport pitfalls that New Jersey does. I think NJ also treats handguns different from rifles in such laws.
