You’d think that as much as Carl Paladino, Rahm Emmanuel, and Andrew Cuomo have been in the news lately, news professionals would at least know how to pronounce their names.
Not so. The yokel talking head on Lubbock’s Channel 11 managed to mispronounce all 3 names at least twice in the space of 1 minute at the introduction of tonight’s broadcast: “PaluNdino,” “Rye-uhm Emmanuel, and Andrew “COO-mo.”

I’m wondering what she’ll make out of “Netanyahu” or “Ahmedinejad.” Probably just say “Israel’s prime minister” or “Eye-ran’s leader.” For that matter, some of the yokels habitually confuse “Israel” and “Israeli,” referring to the country itself by the latter denominative term. I’m not really a stickler for this kind of stuff but there has to be some kind of threshold for tolerating gross ignorance. Don’t these people watch the national news themselves or pay any attention to it at all?

The question is not so much why they do not wtch national news, but why you bother with Lubbock Channel 11 for more than weather and HS sports! Can’t be good for your blood pressure….
