People really do think they understand the world via fiction. Look at how many sour motherfuckers imagine that they should have been a Horatio Alger protagonist, and when that didn’t happen they switched over to some kind of Randian “I’m being fucked over by the mediocrities” rage.

Gets even worse when you talk about international stuff. You cannot convince Americans that large chunks of the world are not zones of pornographically over-the-top ultraviolence or constant peril.
