We lose power due to ice around here. I have 2 portable units that I can power my house and my neighbors with. I put a plug on my furnace and I’ve been tempted to put one on my main line in to power the whole house. It’s come in handy and my neighbor loves me.

Yeah, we’ve contemplating the same thing here, mostly because even on a perfectly cloudless day, we can lose power for hours at a stretch. No warning, just dies and doesn’t come back for hours. Or, worse, we’ll lose power for 15 minutes, get it back for five, and then have it die again. And this will go on for a couple hours, before finally staying on.
