And as a shy, rather introverted 14 yr old “bookworm”, I hadn’t yet learned to fight back against that kind of negativity—it was the ’50s, after all. That came later.
I was widely picked on and considered gay because I was not into muscle cars, team sports or other “manly” pursuits. And I had no girlfriend, nor did I brag about real or imagined encounters with them.
I was certainly interested in girls, I was just too socially inept to be able to do anything about it (until about my junior year in college).
