I wonder what the oil pressure is like near the ocean floor, relative to the pressure from a mile of seawater outside the pipe. Perhaps way lower than near the surface, I’d guess. Possibly negative? But I’ve no idea if injecting “mud” at that depth is practical.

It is about 9,000 psi at the sea-bed just below the BOP stack, ambient water pressure about 2,200. The formation (reservoir) is about 13-14,000 psi. Injecting mud at depth is the best way to kill it. It is what the relief well will do and what they did to hold it back before any cement plugs were set. If the bore hole is intact, a full column of mud will hold back the formation.
