Hi wee fury - I’m more than a little familiar with the backstory on the US Vietnam Veterans Memorial, as we were just starting to put together the Mayors 100 (a committee of 50 of us Vietnam Vets and 50 businesspeople who would help to raise funds for it - and yes, Donald Trump DID give one million bucks to it in NYC) and so was in touch with a number of folks on the DC Memorial.
Most of the opposition I was told (and observed) was not that an Asian woman designed it, nor because it doesn’t “glorify” the military. MOST of the opposition was centered around the fact that OUR memorial would be the Only Black Memorial in a City full of White Marble and the only Memorial that would be below ground level.
I was, fwiw, against putting up the Bronze statue of the three men (put up, I do believe for racial and ethnic diversity reasons) but had no trouble with the Nurses being added at all.
