That would mean they have to campaign here. Republicans do. Trump surrogates were all over my House district. No Clinton surrogates.

I hardly expected Hillary Clinton to come campaign in Scottsbluff (population 14,000). I did expect someone, anyone other than me to posit the Democratic message here.

No one. Nada. Zip. Nothing. Our state governor, our representative, our state senator, both US senators managed to get here. No Democrats. No surprise that the area went overwhelmingly for Trump. His people were the only ones campaigning here.

I doubt this district would have swung Democratic (in this election). But it wouldn’t have been such a blowout, and changing people’s minds means engaging with them. The state and national parties have written us off. Five electoral votes lost without a fight (including the one President Obama won the last time here).

And what happened differently in 2012?
