As an American I believe that to accept torture is to betray an essential part of who we are. But to also dehumanize anyone who disagrees with me, even those who advocate torture, is also to betray a basic American trait. I can disagree, but I must acknowledge the humanity of those who disagree with me. For me, as a Christian, this is essential to my identity. It’s also essential to my American identity. We are all human, every one of us. No matter our views.
