I read “Coming Apart” a couple years ago, kind of by accident, as the subtitle was intriguing and I didn’t recall Murray’s name and previous work. To say his logic is flawed would be an understatement.
He was inclined to blame people in a no-win financial situation for their problems, ascribing it essentially to a lack of moral character.
US conservatism in a nutshell, really. It’s all the fault of those poor people.
It really was striking that this narrative was stretched to fit the financial crisis, which was self-evidently due to misbehavior by the banks and other financial institutions.
