If it had been a Republican at the wheel at Chappaquiddick then Mary Jo Kopechne would have been drowned because she was asking for it - and probably a witch as well.

If it had been a Republican, or anyone not a Kennedy, that man would have been defeated in the next election. Ted Kennedy’s ‘star power’ enabled him to survive in office, but for almost any other senator Chappaquiddick would have been a career-ender. And for someone who wasn’t rich, a screw-up like Chappaquiddick likely would have resulted in a prison sentence.
