Yes. It’s pointless to say it. If every death is a tragedy, saying any particular death is a tragedy is pointless. It also ignores that tragedy is a subjective term. The death of the BTK killer may be a tragedy to other serial killers, but it will not in the least bit be a tragedy for the nation or his victims.

So I both disagree with you, and think if your point of view was true, that it’d be pointless to say any death was a tragedy.
