The one area where natgas has an advantage on wind and solar is that without battery storage to smooth production and to deal with ebb/flow of wind and day/night cycle for solar is that natgas is available anytime, and itโs relatively easy for a utility to power on a natural gas plant to generate electricity.
Itโs much more difficult and costly to do that with coal, which is why utilities are shuttering coal plants everywhere. One of the biggest polluters in the NYC metro area shut down last year, and theyโre already in the process of dismantling the plant because itโs never ever coming back.
