re: #513 WindUpBird

it is! Certainly I’d choose it, but it also requires the foresight and self-confidence to leave the (albiet terrible) home you’ve always known, etc

Some kids have the skills to make it work.

Some are desperate enough to try anyway.

And some figure out how to get to grown and bail legally.

College friend of mine got kicked out of the house when she came out, and managed to get herself to San Francisco, where she not only found actual work, (Mrs. Fields, rather than turning tricks), she managed to get herself a GED and into a private college.

The only problem was that the moron financial aid people did not believe that she’d been kicked out, and apparently were entirely comfortable with the idea that a person might claim to have been thrown out of the house by their homophobic parents merely to get said parents out of paying their share of the college expenses.

IIRC, she called the sheriff of her little Nebraska town, who contacted the financial aid people and assured them that her version was indeed accurate.

They didn’t believe him.

I think she got the aid in the end, but it was pretty tragically wondrously funny in the meantime.
