I’ve heard stories in the US too. You would think from they way that this particular guy was talking that they were driving around in painted wagons stealing babies in the middle of the night.

When my son was a baby, he was very colicky. I used to tell people that I’d sit him on the front stoop about 2am hoping that gypsies would steal him. They’d look aghast, and I’d explain, “That way we’ll get a few nights sleep before the gypsies would leave him on our stoop so they could get a few nights sleep.”

While funny, it wasn’t until later that I realized that it was a pretty racist thing to say.
