The demand for canned meat goods is “on fire” as Americans work to cut spending, according to Reuters.

Numerous brands, including Conagra Brands, Kraft Heinz and Nissin Foods, are reportedly marketing cheaper goods as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants turn toward cooking from scratch and eating leftovers. That shift has caused protein-packed goods to excel recently, according to industry experts.

“We have a large canned-meat portfolio,” Bob Nolan, Conagra’s Senior Vice President of Demand Science, told Reuters. “It’s on fire.”

A 4.6 oz tin of Congra’s Armour Star Vienna sausages is currently sold for $1 at Walgreens, according to Reuters. The company will reportedly also introduced new Banquet chicken patties priced at $6.99 for six to appeal to consumers who cannot afford fast food.

The trend comes as some restaurant chains have seen a decrease in lower and middle class customers. Darden, the parent company of Olive Garden, revealed last month a drop in sales from the demographics.
“Transactions from incomes below $75,000 were much lower than last year, and at every brand, transactions fell from incomes below $50,000,” CEO Ricardo Cardenas said.
Cardenas stated the company was witnessing a shift in consumer behavior, with lower-income guests staying away from eating out
