I’ll take a stab.

People were hungry for someone who could restore the Reagan coalition, and Palin seemed to fill the need.

The theocratic right wanted somebody who could restore the Reagan coalition, but with themselves in charge. They hoped that Palin might succeed where George Bush had failed (not that they’d ever acknowledge that).

Meanwhile, the Left fears that someone could restore an updated Reagan coalition.

That was my thought exactly when McCain picked her. That she could be the next Reagan.
