Well it helps when you’ve been friends before you knew what a right winger was.

Not for me. In the 90s, I had a good friend (and her husband) - a best friend, actually - who HATED Clinton. They spouted right wing tropes before they were popular. I got tired of it and spent less and less time with them, to the point of almost never.

To me it’s all about values.

I can see the Bernie dating thing because those, to me, are core values (generally, not Bernie specific). How one views their fellow human beings, whether they’re black, white or green; religious (in any flavor); gay/straight, I could care less. They’re people. People who deserve being treated the same. That’s my core value. And one I expect from anyone I’d spend any time around.
