These are people who don’t want their children to learn about the horrors of slavery — torture, rape, murder. They don’t want their children to learn about Jim Crow or discrimination. They don’t want their children to learn the reality of our history, only whitewashed fantasies.

I know, and I’d personally go easy on descriptions of torture and the like at that age. A lot of kids might be OK with it, but I’m still disturbed by things I read about when I was considerably older than that. It shouldn’t be whitewashed precisely, but no loving descriptions of being slowly burned alive or whatever, just that people were cruelly and painfully maimed and killed or whatever.
