Why do/did people have an issue with hybrids?

I know that Rush Limbaugh had a thing about Priuses, but just what is it that makes them so repulsive to the Right?

Because hybrids get about 80 miles to the gallon, making people not really mind if gas prices go up and reducing the appeal of drill baby drill.
