Having just narrowly escaped a direct hit from Harvey (I live in Corpus) I’ve been thinking a lot about evacuating and the costs associated. I grew up poor and we would not have been able to evacuate in the event of a disaster. We wouldn’t have been able to afford plywood to board up and protect our home, wouldn’t have had money for a hotel, etc. It cost us several hundred dollars to secure our house on Thurs/Fri. When people ask, “Why didn’t all those people leave?” I totally understand why they didn’t. For many, they couldn’t, simple as that.
