Fix this mess? That would mean raising taxes in advance of the 2012 elections, and that’s something the Democrats don’t want almost as much as the GOP refuses any cuts for political reasons. It’s about presidential and congressional politics of reelections now.

The Democrats might take solace in knowing that by inaction now, they think they can force the end of the Bush/Obama cuts/extension in 2013 without a vote. I think it’s a poor strategy long term, and does little to address the structural deficits and revenue issues.

I don’t think there’s anything the Dems can do while Republicans are still in congress. Election are the only solution.
