Both those guns are non functioning replica.

Certainly, from the picture, neither appears functional as a firearm.

And, I agree, there is no indication regarding the level of Ruth Ben Ghiat’s sophistication regarding firearms.

It seems to me that, despite his well paid public relations, Musk seems fairly clumsy and ignorant regarding cultural norms as well as a bunch of other things.

It seems to me that Musk intended to signal… something.. with his nightstand picture. And based upon his recent history, signalling the violent right wing would be my first guess.

Whatever the case, obviously it was not very slick and well thought out. But that seems to be his modus operandi.
