Paul’s instructions to the Corinthians were actually quite progressive for the times, in that he encouraged women to query their husbands at home and to learn. He only instructed them to be silent during public church meetings, to avoid disruption and controversy. The whole “submit to your husband” thing… Ugh, I won’t even start with that. Theological dissertations have been written on that topic.

Thank you—that’s quite instructive for me. I like the “for the times” because it helps me not think so bleakly of Paul. I suppose the great leaps to extreme patriarchy were after Constantine’s promotion of the Christian religion in Rome?
