Howdy, folks…just got back from Bean Hollow beach. Banjo, sadly, lost his favorite indestructible chuck-it ball…because some HOOMANS decided to descend on his normally private cove and distracted him, and the ball slowly drifted out beyond the rocks to a point where I didn’t feel safe letting him go after it. Anyhoo…home now and loading my wife’s iPod with episodes of The Splendid Table and RadioLab as she enjoys listening to these on her drive home from work.
Cheers.

Well, fresh water, tap water is fine if dechlorinated, room temperature (70-75F), close to neutral pH.
Bettas are labyrinth fish, which basically means they can breathe air, and often do. They are often found in rice paddies. They do NOT need very clean water, and will actually fare less well if you change too much of the water, too often. Filters are also unnecessary if you only have a Betta. While males are extremely aggressive with other males, they are easily bullied by other species. Thus, they are best kept alone. Also, the males make neat bubble nests at the surface of the water if the water is still enough.
That’s about all I know about Bettas. I know much more about corals, frankly, than I do about freshwater fish.

That can work well, but it’s often best to add some hardness to the water. Distilled water (as well as reverse-osmosis and/or deonized water) is extremely unstable in terms of pH, because it contains no metals which function as pH buffers.
If it is working well for some time, stick with it. Bettas do prefer somewhat softer (i.e., water with less dissolved minerals) water, but too soft (i.e., completely demineralized such as is the case with distilled) can be trouble.
However… once again… the cardinal rule of fish husbandry is to maintain stability. If it has been working for some time, don’t mess with what is working.

re: #57 SanFranciscoZionist

well, it doesn’t appear to be political—from the yahoo news article:
The committee unanimously voted to establish an investigative subcommittee to gather evidence and determine whether Waters violated standards of conduct.
Looking at the allegation, it seems like it could have just been an oversight, not anything intentionally corrupt. But appearances of impropriety can’t be whitewashed, or they end up becoming a bigger political story.
Waters came under scrutiny after former Treasury Department officials said she helped arrange a meeting between regulators and executives at Boston-based OneUnited Bank without mentioning her husband’s financial ties to the institution.
Her husband, Sidney Williams, held at least $250,000 in the bank’s stock and previously had served on its board. Waters’ spokesman has said Williams was no longer on the board when the meeting was arranged.
Seems like a pretty minor thing to me.

Kristin Gore’s first novel features a Senate aide who keeps losing Betas. They die on her. It turns out that the guy who sells them to her is a North Korean agent, and the Secret Service takes her in for questioning because she keeps going to his store so frequently to replace the Betas and get supplements and toys and such for the new ones.

That’s an acceptable water change regimen. Just don’t go much about 1/3 at a time, and you should be fine.
As for plants, check out peace lilies. They do very well with roots submerged, and have a waxy coating which discourages mold/mildew growth. They also have a tendency to use the fish waste as fertilizer, which helps clean the water, albeit very slowly relative to how fast waste builds up.

The impropriety would have been when she had her meeting in the first place. If she did anything wrong at all, it was in the worst case a minor oversight. If her husband was no longer on the board, then I could see her not thinking about the $250k in stock. $250k in stock—that’s chump change in terms of ownership and not worth any kind of political favor.

I keep a reef aquarium at my house, with mostly what are called “SPS” corals in it. They are known for being extremely sensitive creatures.
I had, for many years, used RO/DI wtaer (pure water with no minerals) to top off the system for evaporation. One day, my RO/DI filter broke while my car was dead, and the salinity in the tank was rising above safe limits due to evaporation.
So, I broke one of the biggest rules in reefkeeping: I used tapwater to top it off. The corals not only were fine with it, they actually started growing even faster. There’s something in my water they like. I have used well water ever since.
My point is that this kind of thing is as much art as it is science. What has been working will generally continue to work. So stick with your regimen if the critters are healthy, and have been for some time. If they start to slide for whatever reason, check the pH and buffering capacity of the water (carbonate hardness). If the pH is very low, and the carbonate hardness is too, then you know what your problem might be.
Regardless, don’t treat anything as a problem if it is working well.

It’s worth noting that in the case of the salt water tank, hardness is taken care of with the salt mix used to make up new water. My advice applies only to fresh water.

But it seems like she was supposed to have disclosed her husband’s relationship with the bank (he sat on the Board) and then the Feds would decide if the bank would get the funding. If the Feds knew of the relationship and gave them money anyway, why is it her problem? If I’m understanding the issue is about money the bank received, supposedly with her influence.

Is sounds like it was a FORMER relationship of being on the board. The disclosure requirements are rather extensive for public figures. This is mostly due to former cases of corruption. It does make it a lot more difficult to influence peddle, but it also makes for a lot of minor oversights being blown out of proportion.

Meek may have a chance. I haven’t completely given up on him. He’s doing most of his campaigning in the north where no one knew him previously.
Carrie Meek (his mother) was the first Black woman to be elected to the Florida Senate. A daughter of sharecroppers and granddaughter of slaves, she was a devoted public servant until retiring and her son took her seat (ran unopposed) in 2000 I guess it was.
Anyway, I moved to this neighborhood in 1996. My mail came for 1 month and then stopped. Long story short, I received no mail for 8 months thereafter, no matter what I did which included contacting the Post Master General. I contacted Meek’s office and within 4 days, my mail started again.
Second time I called her because I never received my income tax refund. It was the year Bush was giving out those $300 checks and there was no way to get through to the IRS. When October came and I still hadn’t received any money, I called Meek again and within a week, it was mailed to me.
If you have the right people, they will work for you. Kendrick follows his mother’s principals.

It’s blazing hot in Oklahoma..Feels like a blast furnace when you walk outside.
It’s pretty bad when it’s too hot to go swimming in the pool at the hotel..

Tomatillos are great when grilled and a part of guacamole.
I use them in curries too. They are a great all purpose veg.

It was too hot to stay out there very long. As you say, when it’s too hot to be in a swimming pool…

Salt doesn’t evaporate, so all you have to do is keep the volume of water stable. I use float switches in the sump attached to pumps in reservoirs of fresh water. If the sump’s water level remains stable, so does the salinity. I maintain my systems at 35ppm salt, or 1.026 specific gravity, measured with a refractometer.

DON’T FORGET THE OIL!
The oil has pretty much disappeared.
That type of oil, in the very hot conditions that exist in the Gulf, evaporates quickly.
What’s left in the water is handled fairly efficiently by oil-eating bacteria, in plentiful supply in the Gulf again due to the hot conditions.
It is fortunate that the currents participated and the oil didn’t get into the loop current like they thought it might, and it all stayed in the Gulf.

That is what I thought you probably did. There was a salt water tank at one of the local eateries. A mark was made at the water level when filled and as the water level fell they just added fresh water. Do you use distilled rather than tap?

For years I used a reverse-osmosis/mixed-resin deionizer in two stages, but when it died one day, I used well water in an emergency. As it turns out, the tanks seemed to respond well, so I still use well water. It saves me a little money, and I know the water table here is clean.
The reason one generally uses highly purified water for reef tanks is because they are extremely sensitive to certain metals, such as copper. (Even in trace amounts) This house is plumbed in pvc, so that hasn’t been an issue. I got lucky. :)
