Tech Note: The LGF Pages Dashboard

A full-featured tool to manage your LGF Pages
LGF • Views: 30,579

Tonight I’m happy to announce a new LGF web app that I think will prove incredibly useful to our LGF Pages authors: the LGF Pages Dashboard.

With the LGF Pages Dashboard, you can browse and search all the Pages you’ve posted, sort by the various columns, edit your Pages in a popup Ajax interface (with full preview mode), hide and show Pages, and more. The home screen looks a little something like this:

At the top, right below the masthead, you see an information panel that shows how many pages you’ve posted, how many are hidden/visible, and how many you’ve posted today.

Below that is a row of controls; icons for paging back and forth and jumping to the start or end of the list, a popup menu that lets you jump directly to a certain page, and a popup that lets you choose how many LGF Pages titles to display on each page of the list. You can enter a search term in the text field; it’s a simple text-matching search (no boolean options or any fancy stuff right now).

The checkbox labeled “Show comments” enables another column heading in the list, showing the total number of comments for each LGF Page. This is disabled by default, because if you’ve posted a lot of Pages (i.e. thousands), the additional database lookups required to show these totals can make things significantly slower.

Here’s what the column headings denote:

  • ID — The ID number is your Page’s unique identifier; if you click the ID number, your LGF Page will open in a new window.
  • Status — This column shows whether the Page is currently hidden or visible, or was promoted to the LGF front page. You can hide and show Pages by clicking the words ‘visible’ or ‘hidden’; if the Page was promoted, clicking does nothing.
  • Title — The titles of your LGF Pages. Click any title (except one that’s been promoted) to edit the Page in a popup Ajax window. If a Page was promoted, the title shows in a lighter gray color, and it isn’t clickable.
  • Category — The Page’s assigned category. You can change this by clicking the title and editing the Page.
  • Created — The creation date of the Page.
  • Rating — The current rating of the Page.
  • Views — This shows how many “page views” your LGF Page has had; in other words, how many times the Page was loaded by a browser or some other web device. (Note: the Views count on older Pages (before September 2010) is not accurate, because the view-counting feature had not been implemented yet.)
  • Tweets — This shows the number of incoming clicks from the shortened URL that is posted to Twitter when someone uses our retweeting tools.

All of the column headings are clickable, to sort the list by those columns. Click again to reverse the direction of the sort; an arrow appears next to the current sort column showing the direction (descending or ascending).

With the release of the Dashboard, LGF Pages takes a giant step toward becoming a more full-featured blogging tool. I invite our authors to have at it, and let me know if you encounter any bugs. It’s a first release, so I won’t be surprised if you find a few.

If you’d like to register an LGF account so you too can become an LGF Pages author, registration is currently open for the traditional limited time.

Hunh. Y'all's favorite page of mine was my favorite page of mine, too.

Fancy that.

Supercool--Had been wanting to update the Hoophouse page, and couldn't find it.

Thanks! The evolution continues.

One suggestion - I've seen people getting confused, thinking "tweets" are the number of retweets (despite you explaining it in several posts). E.g. in the official bitly terminology "tweets" is a numer of retweets. Maybe it's better to call them "tweet clicks" in the table, or something to that effect?

What does a hidden page do?

What does a hidden page do?

That's what we used to call "deleted." The Pages are never actually deleted - they're just removed from public view.

That makes the column way too wide, though. "Tweets" is nice and short -- and I explained how it works (again) in the post. I don't think anyone is really confused about this.

Going back to tie certain Pages together better with tags and hyperlinks makes a lot of sense. Especially if a subject takes off and evolves over time. Your Pages can have more coherence.

IIRC Oregon coastal areas stay warm enough for concrete foundation work, no?

11 Decatur Deb  Sun, Oct 30, 2011 3:50:41pm

I can see a lot more people popping over to pages that have left the public gaze. Will updating an oldie bring it back up for a day or so?

re: #10 Decatur Deb

Yeah. Here in Portland we get occasional freezes but no permafrost. I asked the concrete guy and he said they can our all year round.

13 Charles Johnson  Sun, Oct 30, 2011 3:54:08pm

But just to clarify this one more time, I have a very good reason for designing it this way: the number that matters, the number you care about, is how many incoming clicks came from the links posted to Twitter. A simple count of how many "retweets" a link had doesn't tell you anything about how much real traffic was generated. The number of clicks on the tweeted link provides a real indicator of how many people were interested enough in the title to click through.

The creator of jQuery, John Resig, designed a retweet button of his own, and he agrees:

Number of clicks, not retweets. The number of retweets may be interesting to some but it's a poor indicator of actual traffic. Instead, the number of clicks coming in is shown instead (a much more useful number).

And bit.ly does not supply a "retweet" count in their API, in any case.

I had one page (a video of the space station) that was semi- interesting and got a few updings. Them some Japanese scientist with a lot of followers tweeted something interesting about it and the tweets went though the roof.

The new search function works great! The old one with the calendar time parameters was very slow and confusing.

I was more surprised at the popularity of some subjects. That, and it seems that what's most popular with LGF members—based on the ratings of those who are active—isn't necessarily what's popular with a larger audience.

My "Open Letter to the Jewish Members of LGF" Page lands in the top 5 no matter what criteria I filter by (ratings, views, tweets). It's funny because I didn't really plan to write it—it was just a build up of emotion that needed catharsis lest my feelings turn into resentment or something. Based on the response I guess a lot of us needed that Page, so I'm very happy that it turned out to be a positive thing.

In OT news I just got up from a nap. Looked at the Lions vs. Broncos game on TV. Looked at the score. Lions. 45. Denver. 3. Denver managed to get another 7 so it's now 45-10. 2 minute warning. Broncos suck.

The most popular essays tend to be those which feel deeply personal and intimate while at the same time making larger points - or touching larger issues - that almost anyone can relate to. Evidently you succeeded at both with that piece :)

Speaking of Muslims in America, I just stumbled on a Bahraini blogger's review of "All Atheists Are Muslim".

So how did that assertion that “all Atheists are Muslim” come about then? Well, a non-Muslim man cannot marry a Muslim woman. End of story. Full stop. So how would one go about that? The man must convert to Islam. In Zahra’s case there is an added complication which is that Duncan, her boyfriend, is an Atheist. Her father couldn’t accept that. That is, he doesn’t accept the concept of Atheism in the first place, but found an expedient way around that in stating that Islam is the submission to God, everything else is subsidiary, and as everything is the creation of Allah, if one believes in His creations then they believe in Him. That is, if one believes in gravity, then essentially that is tantamount to “submission” to the will of Allah and thus recognition of Him and His religion; therefore, one who believes in this is necessarily a Muslim! End of that “Atheist” crap! Hence, the ready solution offered by Zahra’s father to enter both of them into a “Seegha” (milcha) or nuptial agreement recognizable by Islam!

53 Interesting Times  Sun, Oct 30, 2011 4:40:24pm

Re the dashboard, two little "quirks" I just noticed:

1) If you had a page promoted, the stats (views/ratings/tweets etc) only reflect the numbers it had while still a page (i.e. before it got promoted - which makes sense, and could be interesting for comparison purposes)

2) Promoted pages count as "hidden" (i.e. it told me I had two hidden pages, even though I'd never deleted any, so it must be counting my two promoted pages as "hidden"). Minor bug, perhaps.

When Atheists a/k/a Future Muslims Attack
By Debbie Schlussel

Something happened over the last 24 hours. Beginning last night, my inbox became populated with vile hate-mail from atheists. No skin off my back.

But it is entertaining and amusing. It’s hard to believe their letters because they were all attacking me for my appearance on CNN’s “Paula Zahn Now,” a week ago, but coincidentally each letter claims the sender just watched me on CNN. First of all, the video of that segment appears nowhere on the net. Believe me, if it did, I’d link to it. Secondly, since I appeared on the show a week ago, that all these “seminar” e-mailers are now all e-mailing me the same basic hate message, populated with a diversity of obscene insults, it’s easier to believe that they were easily brainwashed into sending me the missives as a result of an atheist blog that just put up an attack on me, yesterday.

I’m surprised these atheists would be so obedient to a higher power that told them to e-mail me since, after all, the one thing they’re supposed to have in common is a lack of belief in a higher power. Well, no-one ever said atheists are consistent or immune from hypocrisy.

[Blah, blah, blah.]

In Christian theology, presuppositionalism is a school of apologetics that presumes Christian faith is the only basis for rational thought. It presupposes that the Bible is divine revelation and claims to expose flaws in other worldviews. It claims that apart from presuppositions, one could not make sense of any human experience, and there can be no set of neutral assumptions from which to reason with a non-Christian.[1] In other words, presuppositionalists claim that a Christian cannot consistently declare his belief in the necessary existence of the God of the Bible and simultaneously argue on the basis of a different set of assumptions that God may not exist and Biblical revelation may not be true. Presuppositionalism is the predominant apologetic of contemporary conservative Calvinist and Reformed churches.[2] Two schools of presuppositionalism exist, based on the different teachings of Cornelius Van Til and Gordon Haddon Clark. Presuppositionalism itself contrasts with classical apologetics and evidential apologetics.

Don't necessarily have to bake. I have a bread machine. You pour the mix in, add the yeast package that comes with it, add water, close the lid, turn the machine on, and about 5-6 hours later, I have a lovely warm loaf of bread. Carve that puppy up and serve it fresh with butter. OM NOM NOM.

During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.

The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures.

re: #53 publicityStunted

Re the dashboard, two little "quirks" I just noticed:

1) If you had a page promoted, the stats (views/ratings/tweets etc) only reflect the numbers it had while still a page (i.e. before it got promoted - which makes sense, and could be interesting for comparison purposes)

2) Promoted pages count as "hidden" (i.e. it told me I had two hidden pages, even though I'd never deleted any, so it must be counting my two promoted pages as "hidden"). Minor bug, perhaps.

Fixed the hidden/promoted count and added another info category for promoted pages.

Once a Page is promoted, its stats aren't updated any more in the Pages DB table. But if you click its ID number in the Dashboard, you'll be redirected to the promoted front page article, where you can see the stats.

re: #157 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

I started out with a huge hatred for the Redskins (my big brother was/is a big fan). My hatred of the Skins created the Dallas fan in me.

They've been so bad for so long, the Eagles have replaced the Redskins as my most hated.

For some reason? I've never hated the Giants.

It's impossible to hate a team containing either of the Manning brothers. There's simply nothing to hate about either of them, since they never seem to do anything morally wrong.

Tiki Barber went to my son's high school. I really admired Parcells. Not Manning related, but, you're right. How can you hate a Manning?

(Unless you're a Philly Phan. They hate everyone.)

KT--did you see that 25 people were arrested for failing to stop occupying the Pearl district?

As a Patriots fan, "we've" lost to both Peyton AND Eli in big games, so how can I not!?!?!

(just an FYI ,, growing up I was a huge Giants fan , as were most people in New England seeing that there was no "Patriots" at the time)

Babin sacks Romo! The Eagles defense is hot tonight. And two plays later they end the Cowboys drive well short the final series of downs original line of scrimmage.

I did see that. Completely stupid. There are plenty of subsidized housing in the area, the rich people there have nothing to do with the banking industry and are probably not anywhere near the top 1% of earners. Probably not even the top 80%. Just dumb jealousy and ignorance.

The LGF Pages posting form now includes a checkbox labeled "Visible," checked by default. If you turn this off, your Page will be saved but not published -- i.e., not visible to the public. This lets you save a "draft" version and use the Dashboard to edit it later, then make it visible when you're finished.

That'll be extremely useful and make it easier to post longer pages. Thanks!
