RNC Open Thread Four, Featuring Paul Ryan’s Sarah Palin Moment

Come on feel the noise
Politics • Views: 32,641

As Condoleezza Rice warms up in the green room, and Paul Ryan sits alone in a darkened room reading Atlas Shrugged for the 197th time, here’s our second Republican Convention thread of the evening, fourth of the debacle.

Looks like Mike Huckabee isn’t going mention Todd Akin in his self-serving speech, after “defending” Akin to pump up his religious right credentials all week.

Sarah Palin... can Paul Ryan live up to the expectation?

Tithing is an important qualification in today's GOP.

I guess Huckabee has given up being the nice, folksy conservative and has decided to go with mean.

I devoutly hope the Democratic convention is a little more positive. I'm truly tired of nasty. Of course, I could just quit watching the GOP convention...

Today, the de facto GOP chairman Rush Limbaugh complained that last night's speeches were not nasty enough!

Huck supports rapists who murder and letting 15 year old rape victims have their stepfather's baby. What's not to love?

re: #5 calochortus

I hope the DNC is paying attention, most sane average folks are one not really watching this because there are no ideas, just an Obama bashing fest, which I can get anyday on Fox News, most sane folks are getting their updates by reading twitter, FB and comments like here, most sane folks are asking themselves after reading what is going on... "But what are you going to do to help the economy?" If the DNC can spend even a piddle more time talking about what can be done to move the economy and why, I think they will win half the battle with anyone who happens to be really undecided. The folks in the convention center, and really interested in watching (with no outside reason such as they are newscasters, or like Charles, they run a site where he has to keep up on that stuff), are choir members, they are already sold on the kool-aid, the want to hear this stuff, its like a drug to feed their anger cravings... they are almost rabid about this garbage...still sorta weird.

What's going on at the convention is partly an angry bigoted backlash based on religion and race.

Republicans have realized that this is not the white Christian gays-in-the-closet nation they grew up in. And that knowledge plays out in ugly ways.

Republicans Debate How Much To Cut Education While China And India Invest More

A new report shows that other nations like China and India have out-invested the U.S. in their education systems as strategies to become more competitive internationally. While U.S. 15-year-old students rank 14th in reading, 17th in science and 25th in math, governments in China and India have expanded to make major investments in early childhood learning, expanded primary and secondary school public education systems, and post-secondary degree programs that produce career-ready workers.

China has gone from spending less than $2 billion on social investments (including education) to $117 billion in 2006, leading the country to become the world’s largest provider of higher education by 2010. By 2030, it will have 200 million college graduates, meaning that there will be more Chinese college grads than total U.S. workers. India has similarly grown its investment in public education from $11 billion a year in the late 1980s to $44 billion in 2008. In 1947, more than 80 percent of Indians were illiterate. Today, the number has plummeted to 25 percent.

I wouldn't give them that much credit. You don't need to be a music critic to detect the racist overtones to the lyrics and thus avoid the song altogether.

I they would not catch the racist overtones of the song, but I just don't think they would knowingly aim it one of "their" black folks is all. Please believe I am not used to giving the benefit of the doubt the GOPers on race, but in this instance I really think it was about Alabama being her home state.

The message they keep getting is that they're being oppressed. I'm sure a lot of them are feeling like victims, not winners.

Yep, they're being oppressed and there are a bunch of lazy, resentful people who're envious of their success and want to steal it from them (rather than work for their own). FEAR. For as long as I can remember, that has been the GOP's message.

We gave up cable, so I guess I'll just have to try to live my life without having seen it. Will I survive?

Yes. Yes you will.

We have a TV in the break room at work (handy in case of bad weather) but unfortunately the channel is always set to CNN. Now, on the one hand, I have kind of a thing for Suzanne Malveaux, but on the other hand, it's the most god-awful worthless information-free melodrama-masquerading-as-news pit of a channel... And they keep running campaign ads.

I usually turn the TV down to "inaudible" whenver I get a chance, but sometimes it can't be avoided.

Since when have Republicans ever not expanded the government or increased government spending? Deficits didn't matter to Reagan, Bush/Cheney or Paul Ryan. $6.8 trillion of the deficit is shit that Paul Ryan voted for.

OK, I know I'm biased being a socialist commie Obama-loving Democrat, but has this whole convention basically been phoned in so far? Back in 2004 and 2008 I think you could tell who was going to win by the mood of the conventions. These people aren't acting or looking like winners to me.

Well, think of it this way: when romney accepts tomorrow night, it will be in a convention hall filled with elderly white people and a sprinkling of young people who were born with bricks up their asses. It will be a mechanical speech filled with supposed examples of Obama failures. When Obama accepts next week, it will be in a stadium with 67,000 people of all colors going out of their minds with joy, and Obama will be ramped up into giving one of his better "positive" speeches. The producer of the pool feed will be having small, multiple orgasms showing the tear-riddled faces of whites, blacks, elderly, young, hispanic, handicapped, etc. There will be Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Miscellaneous (sorry, hat tip to the Simpsons). Expect a 10-point convention bump for the Good Guys.

When Ryan was lamenting the closing of the auto plant in WI, I wonder what the delegates from SC, whose governor the previous night was lauding how that state has landed so much auto manufacturing, were thinking.

Fact is, manufacturers move all the time.

Indeed, this is one of the greatest hypocrisies (and there are many) of Ryan - unwilling to admit that closing that auto plant was exactly the type of decision for which they are praising Romney.

Unless the GOP's volunteering to engage in trust busting, there's never going to be competition in the health insurance market. Any state you go to, one of a small handful of insurers has the market cornered and is charging people through the nose for coverage. And before they chime in with "Across state borders," that does nothing invite the biggest insurers to set up shop in the state with the most lax insurance laws and then sell across to the other 49 states.

The law made significant reductions to Medicare Advantage, a subset of Medicare plans run by private insurers. Medicare Advantage was started under President George W. Bush, and the idea was that competition among the private insurers would reduce costs. But the plans have actually cost the government more than traditional Medicare. The health care law scales back the payments to private insurers."

The fallacy arises out of a belief in magic, in this case a magic conjured by "competition".

Yet all too often what happens is just companies reorganizing their businesses to do what they (publicly held companies) are supposed to do: maximize profit.

That may mean lower prices (to win a bigger market share), but it may also mean higher prices. It's this that the magical thinkers don't grasp.

"Competition" isn't even well defined. And when one is speaking of personal services, and not widgets, substitution doesn't mean equivalence simply because people (the providers) are different.

re: #416 Dark_Falcon

And this is how the wreck appears today:

Image: Yamato_diorama_01.jpg

As with some other capital ships (HMS Invincible, HMS Hood) that suffered main magazine explosions, Yamato was blown in two by the blast.

Unlike those other two, Yamato only suffered the explosion after heeling over massively due to torpedo damage. She was well protected against 'flash' explosions in her turrets.

You also get catastrophic boiler explosions as well when these ships capsize depending on their (the boilers) status at the time. Which can chain in with the various magazines going up. Not fun to be in the water nearby at the time regardless.

And by that time the USN naval aviation pretty much had a strategy for bringing these behemoths down. Suppress their AAA is possible and then massive torpedo attacks concentrated on one side. And any damage you do slows them down, makes them more sluggish, and thus easier to hit. And that strategy essentially exploited the major weakness in the armoring design on that battleship class.

The notion that regulations hurts business is a lie. You really want to F* with business? Go ahead and relax the regulations after a company has invested millions in the controls needed to comply with the old regulations. Then all of a sudden that company with the new facility might not be able to compete with companies that never upgraded and bam, they can't continue operating.

That is why all the GOP talk about politicizing the environment by throwing out all sorts of regulations as soon as they are elected will put a chill on capital investment for these types of facilities and the jobs those projects bring and the long term viability of the employer.

"Competition" is an article of faith amongst the Objectivists, much like the threat of class action lawsuits to keep multinational corporations honest. It's something they have to believe in for their entire world view, of a free market that operates like a Swiss watch in the absence of government intervention, to be believable. And like articles of faith in any religion, it has to be taken as irrefutable, with any real world evidence to the contrary simply proof that the government has prevented the market from working as intended.

Meanwhile, in the real world, "competition" is a quaint notion that long ago ceased to mean anything in face of companies like Wal-Mart and Apple, who have the resources to either price their "competition" into bankruptcy or sue them in court until they scream "Uncle!"

And Japanese AAA was poor to begin with. Though the IJN was the biggest of the three Axis navies, its AAA fire control systems were inferior to those used by both German and Italy. About the Japanese 25mm LAA gun, the less said the better. It was radically inferior to the 40mm Bofors gun.

In some regards, the USN entered World War II playing catch up. But in heavy AA fire control, we were ahead of Japan from the start and the gap only got worse as time went on.

The USN also had a huge lead in the Pacific with radar, which carriers used to direct fighters, battleships used to direct their shots, AA shells used to more accurately explode, and eventually American night fighters used to get the jump on Japanese night fighters.

Add to that Oldendorf placing his DDs and some PTs further down the strait. They reported the Japanese ships approach and then made torpedo attacks. The Japanese were disrupted and damaged even before contacting the gun line crossing their "T".

The big "what if" I hear is what would have happened had Halsey detached Lee and there was then a US surface task force sitting there for Kurita and the Central Force to encounter. Though I expect that Kurita would have cut and run fairly quickly since that detachment would have also included two groups of fast carriers. A lot of folk are still curious how a Yamato vs Iowa-class BB duel would have turned out for real.

So close ... "the world wonders" had to have been some kind of karma.

For the record, my belief is that the radar & the 16"/50 guns were too far superior to what the IJN possessed by then. 3 ~ 5 full salvos only.

Yamato would have lasted longer than Yamashiro did, and might have gotten a hit or two in (which would have been seriously damaging, since the older ships weren't armored to resist 18" shellfire). But you're right: She never could have actually broken Oldendorf's line.

If you want a scary Leyte Gulf 'what if', imagine if Admiral Kurita had been lost along with his flagship, the heavy cruiser Atago, when the USS Darter torpedoed it in the Palawan Passage. Had that happened, Admiral Matome Ugaki would have been in command at Samar. Taffy 3 still would have fought bravely, but Ugaki was much more aggressive than Kurita. He would have charged the Yamato straight through to the landing beaches. It's quite possible she would have subsequently been sunk, but she would have had plenty of time to fire her San Shiki canister shells at the beachhead. The loss of life would have been horrible.

Horrible yes, but by the same token if they had stuck around longer wouldn't that increase their odds of getting found and engaged by the other American forces in the area?

Leyte Gulf was ultimately Japan throwing away what remained of both their carrier force to give their battleships one last moment to shine, if they couldn't break America's spirit (and I doubt they could have) then they had no chance at all by that point in the war, the worst they could do was be spiteful about how many people they got killed before it was all over.

I think that this was exactly what was in Kurita's heart as he watched the tin cans charge him despite having no chance to survive. The two issues are both found in Japanese culture so it's not impossible to imagine his giving way to the honor of the Johnston, Hoel & Roberts.

Admiral Ugaki was fanatical, James. If he believed he could have crippled the landing on Leyte, he would have stayed until his ships were destroyed. That such a victory would kill him would have perturbed Ugaki not the slightest; He would have thought such a death glorious, an end worthy of a samurai.

I don't disagree with you on what his actions would have been.

I'm just saying that even if he had gotten that Samuari death he wanted and managed to destroy the landings it wouldn't have mattered in the bigger picture of the war.

Japan's only ally in the war was still going to get plowed under by Russia which was then going to turn its attention to Japan.

It just goes to show that great devotion to ones cause and unbreakable loyalty are fine things... but those virtues become vices without the ability to gauge the nature of the cause they are striving for.

You're right that Japan had lost the war by October 1944, but its military leadership refused to accept this. At the end of the day, they were simply delusional, though some of that was motivated by a desire to avoid being shamed and punished for their misdeeds. When fanatics are stuck on a slide to defeat, they tend to fall ugly. Their fanaticism will not allow them to admit defeat.

Which of those things is good?

More jobs for impoverished Chinese and Vietnamese. That's maybe good for them, not so good for the US workers who lose their jobs.
