Creationists Get Influential Positions in Texas Science Textbook Review

Creationism never dies, it just smells funnier
Wingnuts • Views: 30,502

Remember the last time the religious right in Texas tried to sneak Christian creationism into public school science classes? Well, they’re back.

Actually, they never went away, and the Republican anti-science religious fanatics on the State Board of Education are making another big play to influence the textbooks that teach American kids biology: Alarm Bells Are Ringing: Creationists Get Influential Positions in Texas Science Textbook Review.

It looks like the Lone Star State’s reputation as a hotbed of anti-science fanaticism is about to be reinforced. At least six creationists/”intelligent design” proponents succeeded in getting invited to review high school biology textbooks that publishers have submitted for adoption in Texas this year. The State Board of Education (SBOE) will decide in November which textbooks to approve. Those textbooks could be in the state’s public school science classrooms for nearly a decade.

Among the six creationist reviewers are some of the nation’s leading opponents of teaching students that evolution is established, mainstream science and is overwhelmingly supported by well over a century of research. Creationists on the SBOE nominated those six plus five others also invited by the Texas Education Agency to serve on the biology review teams. We have been unable to determine what those other five reviewers think about evolution.

Although 28 individuals got invites to review the proposed new biology textbooks this year, only about a dozen have shown up in Austin this week for the critical final phase of that review. That relatively small overall number of reviewers could give creationists even stronger influence over textbook content. In fact, publishers are making changes to their textbooks based on objections they hear from the review panelists. And that’s happening essentially behind closed doors because the public isn’t able to monitor discussions among the review panelists themselves or between panelists and publishers. The public won’t know about publishers’ changes (or the names of all the review panelists who are in Austin this week) until probably September. Alarm bells are ringing.

Following are the six creationists/evolution critics we have identified so far on the biology review teams:

  • Raymond Bohlin is vice president of vision outreach for Probe Ministries in Plano and a research fellow for the Seattle-based Discovery Institute. The Discovery Institute promotes the pseudoscientific concept “intelligent design” over evolution. Founded in 1973, Probe works “to present the Gospel to communities, nationally and internationally, by providing life-long opportunities to integrate faith and learning through balanced, biblically based scholarship.” Bohlin has a doctorate in molecular and cell biology from the University of Texas at Dallas, making him a star performer for anti-evolution groups. He is listed as a “Darwin Skeptic” on the Creation Science Hall of Fame website. Probe and the Creation Science Hall of Fame promote a fundamentalist, literal interpretation of the Bible’s creation story. We know that Bohlin is in Austin this week to participate in the biology review panel meetings.
  • Walter Bradley is a retired Baylor University professor of engineering who coauthored a book, The Mystery of Life’s Origins in 1984, that essentially launched the “intelligent design” movement. “Intelligent design” suggests a scientific basis for creationism (creationism dressed up in a lab coat). Bradley, founding fellow of the Discovery Institute’s Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture, is also listed as a “Darwin Skeptic” on the Creation Science Hall of Fame website. He is participating in the biology review panel meetings this week.
  • Daniel Romo is a chemistry professor at Texas A&M University and is listed as a “Darwin Skeptic” on the Creation Science Hall of Fame website. We don’t know yet whether Romo made it to Austin for the biology review panel meetings.
  • Ide Trotter is a longtime standard-bearer for the creationist movement in Texas, both as a source of funding and as a spokesperson for the absurdly named creationist group Texans for Better Science Education. Trotter, listed as a “Darwin Skeptic” on the Creation Science Hall of Fame website, is a veteran of the evolution wars at the SBOE and is participating the biology review panel meetings this week. He testified before the board during the 2003 biology textbook adoption and again in 2009 during the science curriculum adoption. In both instances, Trotter advocated including scientifically discredited “weaknesses” of evolution in Texas science classrooms. Trotter, who has a doctorate in chemical engineering, runs his own investment management company and served as dean of business and professor of finance at Dallas Baptist University. He claims that major scientific discoveries over last century have actually made evolutionary science harder to defend: “The ball is rolling and it’s going downhill. There are not enough forces on the side of Darwinism to keep pushing it back uphill forever.”
  • Richard White, a systems (network) engineer in Austin, testified at an SBOE hearing on the proposed science curriculum standards on March 25, 2009. At the time, he advocated the inclusion of phony “weaknesses” of evolution in Texas science standards: “…These are all well-known scientific problems with modern evolutionary theory, and they do not exhaust the list. The entire list is a very long one.” - White went on in his testimony to insist that teaching the mainstream scientific consensus concerning evolution without also presenting its alleged “weaknesses” amounted to forcing religious dogma on students. We don’t know whether White is participating in the review panels this week.
  • David Zeiger is a seventh-grade teacher at a Christian private school in North Texas. He holds a biochemistry degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. In 2009 he and his wife, Heather, opposed removing from the state’s science curriculum standards the requirement that students learn about so-called “weaknesses” of evolution. Creationists has used that requirement to insist that publishers include discredited arguments challenging evolution, such as supposed “gaps” in the fossil record. We don’t know whether Zeiger is participating the review panels this week.

We’ll have more on this soon.

How a bunch of men mostly old enough to have plumbing issues can believe in this ‘intelligent design’ tripe is beyond comprehension.

The answer, of course, is that they don’t believe in ID at all. What they believe in is their version of biblical literalism, and they also believe that ID is a useful mask to put on when talking outside the tribe of true believers.

I wonder how long it will be before top-shelf universities start putting applicants from Texas at the bottom of the pile.

If I were in academia as a biology prof, I’d want to screen for this nonsense directly in applications. For example, an essay question something like: “Identify a current topic of debate in the life sciences and briefly describe the competing positions”

The obligatory Aquinas quote:

“The truth of our faith becomes a matter of ridicule among the infidels if any Catholic, not gifted with the necessary scientific learning, presents as dogma what scientific scrutiny shows to be false.”

These nutballs are doing a lousy job of their Christian witnessing.

Keep religion out of science. End of story. People are free to practice whatever religion they wish but it has no place in science education. Look at it this way. The big bang and evolution was part of God’s plan.

Yeah, but in the outer echelons of Wingnuttia, this is an absolutely heretical statement. There is a series of sermons out there specifically saying that evolution is anti-theological and that creationism is a central tenet of the Christian message. Seriously!

Orthodox Jews used to be fairly progressive about accepting evolution, but in the 1970’s some rabbi got a hold of Discovery Institute propaganda and started spreading it around like a virus.

And there was a witch hunt against this very devout and also scientific rabbi.

Do you ever get the feeling that the Axis is finally winning World War 2?

Detailed positions vary, of course, but with their commitment to superstition, mysticism, privilege, and authority, the Axis leaders and philosophers of old would be delighted at the present course of this society. First, they could gloat triumphantly that our Arsenal of Democracy, Detroit, has been reduced to ruin by the voodoo economics of outsourcing and the superstitious demonization of unions. Now, these mountebanks and frauds in Texas have a fair chance of institutionalizing a superstition that has not been commonly accepted in academic circles since the Middle Ages, all on the basis of authority alone and with disastrous consequences for our scientific leadership.
Perversely, these cranks who deny “survival of the fittest” in nature are the same ones who delight in applying it as an excuse for the callous vilification and exploitation of the poor, the unlucky, and the elderly, and the glorification of inherited or stolen wealth.

How a bunch of men mostly old enough to have plumbing issues can believe in this ‘intelligent design’ tripe is beyond comprehension.

One of the two principle roles of religion is the personal one of dealing with our existential dilemma. While it is pretty clear that “ID” is a smokescreen to sneak in creationism, the old men of which you write are not going to want to revisit their beliefs in their old age, because, well, their terminal state is staring them in the mirror.

The religious euphemisms around death are intended to soften the pain, which is unbearable to some if they allow themselves to dwell upon it.

As such, no amount of argument is going to move the person who has found their “answer” in God, because ultimately it is the only answer allowable to them.

On food it depends. Some bases have greatly cut back on chow halls and instead they give the troops better quarters with kitchens and extra pay to cover their meals. Food costs go up, but the military saves money by not having to heat or air condition a large dining room and by not having to hire cooks as contractors.

Texas has a self-defense law based on the castle doctrine. The law has a “stand your ground” clause, meaning the person using physical or deadly force against an attacker does not have a duty to retreat. Deadly force is permissible under the law when a person is attempting to defend himself from deadly force of an attacker in his home, vehicle or place of employment, or against attackers who are committing crimes of kidnapping, murder, sexual assault or robbery.

The law provides civil immunity to persons who use authorized deadly force against attackers.

What’s the deal for driving around with a gun. Must it be registered in TX? Can you just leave a state and arrive to TX with your gun? (probably just fine)

No limits is what I’m guessing. And they bitched about “fast & furious” I betcha the Texas gun running is huge in comparison.

I think you have to have a concealed carry license, or the gun has to be boxed up.

The General Firearms Laws of The State of Texas:

However even with a handgun, in Texas, there are several places where a person may possess a handgun legally without the benefit of a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL). These places include:

A person’s residence or other real property under their control.
A person’s private motor vehicle or watercraft if the handgun is concealed, and the person is legal to possess a firearm, is not a member of a street gang, and is not engaged in the commission of a crime greater than a Class C misdemeanor traffic or boating violation.
A person engaged in lawful fishing, hunting, or other sporting activity on the immediate premises where the activity is conducted, or is en route between the premises and the persons’ residence or motor vehicle, if the firearm is a type commonly used in the activity.

Some states do not count it as “carrying” if the gun stays in your car. Others do if the gun is not locked in a case in the trunk. There’s no uniform standard on that point.

Why, yes, Ted Cruz is a demagogue

“…As a way to separate himself from the pack at the expense of his fellow Republicans, however, Cruz’s tactics are hardly insane. They’re irresponsible, but if Cruz doesn’t have the willingness to demagogue, then he’s just a brand new Republican Senator with nothing to show for his first six months in office, and no plans to add anything substantive to his record before his already-begun presidential run. So expect plenty more of this in the months to come.”

Hello Lizard Nation!

The Eastern Sierra tour continues!
Was up at Mammoth today to see Devils Polepile and Rainbow Falls. Then further north to see tufa and an extinct volcano at Mono Lake. Final stop before heading to the hotel was out to Bodie (three miles of dirt road and all.) Did not do the last justice due to being pretty footsore by then.

The eastern Sierras are frakking awesome. I love the Devils Postpile and Mono Lake.

Texas. Love it or hate it…

Peaceable Journey

Gov. Perry also signed H.B. 1815 after passage by the 2007 Legislature, a bill that allows any Texas resident to carry a concealed handgun in the resident’s motor vehicle without a CHL or other permit.[8] The bill revised Chapter 46, Section 2 of the Penal Code to state that it is in fact not “Unlawful Carry of a Weapon”, as defined by the statute, for a person to carry a handgun while in a motor vehicle they own or control, or to carry while heading directly from the person’s home to that car. However, lawful carry while in a vehicle requires these three critical qualifiers: (1) the weapon must not be in plain sight (in Texas law, “plain sight” and “concealed” are mutually exclusive opposing terms);[9] (2) the carrier cannot be involved in criminal activities, other than Class C traffic misdemeanors; and (3) the carrier cannot be a member of a criminal gang.[10][1

I’m exhausted. I have a major project proposal due tomorrow afternoon and I’m nowhere near finished. Oh sure, the heavy lifting — getting pricing estimates, client references, going through the Q & A section and bid sheets, etc. has been done. It took weeks, but I managed. The last part— putting it all together as a finalized proposal — is driving me insane.

I’ll be up at at Fuck-This-O-Clock in the morning so I can get to my office early and barrel through for hours uninterrupted before the interns arrive. Then it’s sending it all to my boss before noon, hitting a meeting across town at 1pm and hoping like hell that it all gets approved and signed so I can have it in by 5pm.

I’m off to sleep for a few hours. G’night all.

You’ve reminded me of how much I’m learning of Britain’s role in WWII. Most Americans see the war from an entirely different perspective—beginning at Pearl Harbor—and we didn’t actually feel threatened until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor; Hitler was really Europe’s problem—and the British Empire’s. Britain was facing the Nazi juggernaut without US help, but with pilots as young as 18, many of whom never returned from their missions. In fact, the average age of a British pilot was 20: bbc.co.uk However, civilian deaths in Britain, over 27,000, were far higher than the 544 fighter crew deaths. We in the US just can’t imagine the horror of those civilian losses, just as many of us can’t quite connect to civilian losses in the wars we have witnessed since WWII, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

Even I can’t get away from Dec 7—my g-grandson was born on that date. I was born in early 1941 and my dad was 31 and was not drafted, but served as a civilian cook in HI for a short time (I still have a photo of him in cook’s whites). So, I’m too young to have anything but vague memories and photographic reminders from that era, but it was so entirely different from our more modern wars and the public’s attitude toward them, with some good reason, for the most part, but as far as what Snowjob and others are pushing, that is folly. Prevention is as important as defense if we are to preserve democracy.

This fellow joined the RAF at age 17 and was flying a Spitfire a few months later. Geoffrey Wellum: The terrible beauty of flying a Spitfire at the age of 18 telegraph.co.uk

Not so coincidentally, IMHO, the WWII experience further democratized the UK, opening up its society in ways not seen before that period.

Yeah, I’ve spent the last couple of weeks on the phone trying to sort out:

1)Switching phone companies. I would rather be stuck in the eye with a hot fork. Both companies messed up leaving me with 700 dollars(including early termination fees) worth of bills when it should have been 250 less. Yesterday alone was over 90 minutes of being transferred from this person to that one and saying the same thing over and over. I think it’s fixed now.

2)My big project is calling everyone on a really long list to bug the shit out of them until I can get some straight answers as to why my son won’t be going into a program for young adults with autism until MAYBE next year. If assholes weren’t messing with the funding for this, he would have been there for a month already. I also found out his college will not be paid for, so I have to figure out how to help him navigate that madness. The state of GA was supposed to tell us this crap, and it took me a week(one day I was on the phone for almost six freaking hours and no one bothered to mention this detail) to find just that part out. I don’t blame the bureaucracy, I blame the federal level politicans holding money hostage and our idiot governor messing with the state level status of this agency by changing it’s oversight THREE times since Feb. I also blame him for cutting taxes to the point that the state funds (which determine the federal funds) are practically nothing now. Then I find out yesterday that the GOP want to slash the Depts of Education, HHS, and Labor another 20 percent. That happens, this program is done. After they spent 10 million dollars to rebuild and staff this place. So they can help young people with disabilities become independent. So they aren’t “moochers” at the mercy of bullshit cuts like this.

Sigh. And my 20th anniversary is tomorrow and I have no idea what to get the Husband. He has everything I could think of to get him already. I feel like crying.

Recommended reading on the subject: Fighter by Len Deighton

One thing not mentioned in the article was the fact that Britain had the first modern command and control system for fighter defence. The Observer Corps and the radar stations all reported to a central station where the data was filtered. The results were displayed on a large table map where up to the minute data was displayed. The commander could then dispatch just enough aircraft to meet the Luftwaffe.

What also helped was the fact that Fat Boy (Hermann Goëring) was a bloody incompetent leader.

re: #134 Croc-Wearing Authoritarian

HA. I actually made double chocolate cheesecake yesterday for after we come home from dinner. We were supposed to be planning a trip to the national parks in California, but the job loss and lower pay at the new job kinda screwed us on that. My Husband, god love him, still is thinking we’re going, but he hasn’t even booked the flight yet and we were supposed to go in about 7 weeks. Another Sigh.

This thing with my son is pissing me off. I got this process started in high school, he’s been out of school for a year now. I feel like I’ve wasted nearly 4 years making sure this was the right thing to do. Now I have to start over and my son is just crushed. Why is it ALWAYS the poor, elderly and those with disabilities who get messed with first? When you look at the amount of money that states and the feds spend on this kind of thing, those things are such a tiny portion of the overall budget and those cuts never fix anything. I actually had someone tell me I shouldn’t make him dependent on the government for anything, and I yelled at them, lol. The entire idea behind this program is to prevent gov’t dependence in the first place. As Temple Grandin says of autistic people”collecting Social Security Disability is NOT a career path.” In fact, my son is one of those people who would be seriously judged by some people because he doesn’t “look disabled”.

I’m frustrated, can’t you tell? LOL.

It’s about who you know and what impression you’ve already made too. re: #11 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut

Yeah. I mean, as an atheist, I could give a shit, really, but why don’t these people want their god to be a super-smart god who designs the whole universe?

I can think of several reasons:
1) That would hint that man isn’t the center of the universe.

2) It requires a much larger worldview than the earth as a shoe-box diorama with a bearded white man hovering above.

3) People imagine their gods in their own image, and no conservative is going to imagine a god that’s smart like those tricksy liberals.

Well, it’s been a crappy morning all the way around. NJTransit had yet another trespasser incident with a pedestrian killed by an oncoming train. That left the morning commute for folks on my usual train line screwed. Today’s incident was about a 1/4 mile from the nearest proper crossing.

This one appears to have been a suicide.

That’s after another such incident last night on a nearby line. We’ve had about 1-2 of these kinds of things a month. That’s despite all kinds of warnings, additional signage, and efforts to get people to understand that they shouldn’t cross tracks when the gates are down and flashing.

Not much you can do when someone wants to commit suicide, but the engineer and train crews have to live with this the rest of their lives. In fact, most of the train crews have someone on their crew who has had to deal with one of these incidents - often more than once. It’s part of the nature of the suburban train line with at-grade crossings, but not one you can ever get used to.

Editor’s note: Carroll Bogert is deputy executive director for external relations at Human Rights Watch. The views expressed are her own.

Edward Snowden’s Russian lawyer says his client wants to start learning Russian. Now that the American whistleblower has finally left Sheremetyevo airport for “temporary asylum” in Russia, he might find himself iz ognya da v polymya - out of the frying pan and into the fire. After all, Russia is hardly a bastion of free speech defense. We recommend including a few key terms in any vocabulary lesson:

Khuliganstvo: Translated as “hooliganism,” this word can mean anything from getting into fistfights to shouting political slogans and jumping around in a Moscow cathedral. Two women from the punk group Pussy Riot are currently serving out a two-year prison term for their khuliganstvo. (Pussy Riot, in case you’re wondering, is “Pussi Raiot” in Russian.)

Ekstremizm: This one is easy for an American to pronounce, but hard to define. It can mean just about anything that is controversial or generates “discontent,” especially if it criticizes the authorities. There’s a whole section of the Russian police dedicated to fighting ekstremizm. One example of their work: the prosecutor’s office recently tried to ban a book calling for an international tribunal on war crimes committed in Chechnya because of its ekstremizm…

So, I’m sure everyone saw that George Zimmerman got stopped by LEOs in Texas for speeding. They let him off with a warning.

Nice of them.

But that got me wondering if he was adhering to state and federal law when it came transiting those states with his firearm in the glove compartment (he had legal permit in FL).

Mississippi allows the permitted owner to carry the firearm anywhere in the vehicle, including the glove compartment. So too does Florida and Louisiana.

Texas doesn’t have a problem with his carrying of a firearm, but if he had been stopped in Alabama, it could have been a problem.

Alabama doesn’t allow the firearm to be stored in the glove compartment:

A person
may lawfully transport a firearm, including a handgun, from one state in which they are legal to possess to another
state without a permit as required under Alabama law, provided the following conditions are met:
 The firearm is unloaded.
 Neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from
the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle.
 In case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment, the firearm and
ammunition shall be in a locked container other than the glove box or console.

Makes for a difficult situation, and LEOs have a tough time as it is with any vehicle stop.

re: #239 lawhawk

Makes for a difficult situation, and LEOs have a tough time as it is with any vehicle stop.

Sadly, I think most southern Alabama police would be more interested in getting Zimmerman’s autograph than ticketing him for a gun in the car.

A couple of days ago I paged a story relating to a PBS Frontline special on Emeritus corporation, the nations largest operator of assisted living homes for seniors.

Now that it’s aired, the company is demanding their employees fight back on social media but they accidentally sent the e-mail containing this directive to ProPublica:

OK, everyone, it’s our turn now.
The broadcast has aired. Frontline has told their story. Now it’s time to tell ours. And folks, let’s tell it LOUDLY.

I am asking you, right now, to take five minutes, go online to one of these websites (or cut and paste to all of them, for that matter), and write just one sentence that speaks to your incredible community, your amazing staff, your wonderful residents and families that you care for, the job that you love and the difference that you make.

There’s a great quote: “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.”

If you don’t think your one post will matter, it does. A LOT.

We have only to be proud of what we do. Now is OUR time to flood the internet with the sounds of OUR united voices. Shout out about the exceptional care your team delivers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for your residents and their families who trust and believe in you.

And speaking of SC:

Deputies say they are trying to figure out if vandalism at a Union County church is linked to a white supremacist couple charged with killing a sex offender and his wife last week.

Authorities say the pastor of Buffalo United Methodist Church arrived Tuesday morning to find Bibles ripped apart and German swastikas, along with racist and other offensive items, spray painted throughout the church. The vandals misspelled Christ and painted “Satan Loves Me” on one wall.

Union County Sheriff David Taylor says his investigators are trying to figure out if the vandals have ties to the couple charged in the killing or are just copycats.

Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s Democratic secretary of state who officially entered the race on Tuesday, leads the longtime senator by one point, with 45 percent to McConnell’s 44 percent. While her lead is within the margin of error, the poll also underscored some broader issues that McConnell is likely to face as he campaigns for a sixth term.

I’ve downloaded some sample Geology textbooks from Amazon to my iPad. The things are impossible to read, and my eyes aren’t that bad. There’s so much color and tiny text set against less than optimum background colors that you have to zoom every page, then slide it around to read it.

The other thing is they cost just about the same as real textbooks, and real textbooks can be sold back, so I guess I’m missing the point.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said 1,319 civilians died and 2,533 were injured as a result of the war from January 1 to June 30, up 23 percent from the same period in 2012.

UNAMA attributed 74 percent of civilian deaths and injuries to Anti-Government Elements, nine percent to Pro-Government Forces and 12 percent to ground engagements between Pro-Government Forces and Anti-Government Elements. The remaining four percent of civilian casualties were unattributed caused mainly by explosive remnants of war.

328 Gus  Thu, Aug 1, 2013 10:13:38am
But the problems that exist in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen are multifaceted, and we can’t solve those problems by focusing solely on one actor, even if that one actor is the one for whom we bear direct responsibility. At my old blog, I wrote extensively about the ways in which terrorist organizations like al Qaeda and the Taliban violate the laws of warfare - by targeting civilians; by operating from within civilian population centers, thereby putting those civilians at risk; by failing to wear identifiable uniforms that distinguish themselves from civilians, and so forth - so I won’t repeat all that here. I will, however, point out that Wednesday’s UNAMA report underscores my argument, and if the anti-drone crowd really cares about innocent civilians caught up in this insane “war on terror,” they ought to be just as quick to condemn the war crimes committed by terrorist organizations as they are to criticize American drone strikes.

Unless, of course, civilian deaths only matter when they can be linked to the Obama Administration.

David von Ebers

Marine Helps Boy Finish Race, Melts Our Hearts

On Saturday, the 19-year-old Marine noticed 9-year-old Boden Fuchs struggling to complete the race. The boy had become separated from his group. According to the Facebook page, Seal of Honor, which posted a photograph of the pair running together, Boden asked Kerr, “Sir, will you please run with me?” Kerr, wearing boots and fatigues, and carrying a full backpack, stuck with the boy, encouraged him to complete the race, and helped him reunite with his party at the end of the course—even though Kerr was dead last in his age group, clocking in at 35:43 minutes (five seconds behind Boden). He came in so much later than his Marine buddies, in fact, that they were concerned he had been injured.

Comic relief from Freeperland, “Pinochet” (for real, that’s the username) proposes deporting illegal immigrants to………Detroit:

Last year, New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, suggested that illegal immigrants be sent to Detroit.

See: cnsnews.com

I think that this is a great idea. Because of America’s highest crime rates, 65 percent of the population of Detroit left the city, so there is a lot of room in the city. The illegal immigrants should be forcibly transported to Detroit, and not receive any government welfare of any kind, and the government should block all exits from Detroit to prevent the immigrants from fleeing from Detroit for two years. Instead of illegal immigrants ruining good neighborhoods in Arizona and Texas, why not take them to a place where the neighborhoods are already ruined?

After a couple of weeks in Detroit, illegals will beg to be taken back to Mexico City, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua, which are civilized by comparison. At least, those third world hell holes have not gone bankrupt like Detroit, because they do not have welfare, food stamps, and union wages for public sector workers.

Actually, several of those countries are chronically bankrupt and government employees form a privileged elite in some of them. Mexico’s government, at least, passes out free food as a matter of policy. It is basically missing the point, though, to introduce facts into any discussion of freeper bigotry. To them, errors of fact are a feature not a bug. This is because literacy and factual knowledge are vaguely disreputable and gay in their everyday lives; they see these things as a necessary evil at best.

I’m not sure if it would be safer. PR has been hit by 40 hurricanes over the ~130 yrs (or so) with an average of 1 every 3.5 yrs. The entire space industry, including manufacturing, would have to relocate to PR to actually make it cheaper. The cost and time to ship things to PR is tremendous.

I have a solution to the RWNJ problem: Declare the area around Lubbock a Special Administrative Region, similar to what the Chicoms have done in Hong Kong, but for glibertarians and sovereign citizen nutjobs. All “others” would be compensated to leave and their former property made available for homesteading.
Yellowhouse Canyon would be renamed Galt Gulch. Public schools, fire departments, etc. would be abolished and replaced by private ad hoc efforts. The only law, enforced by the county judge and the new sheriff, would be geared toward the protection of sacred property rights. (The current sheriff would have to go, since he is a real lawman and has little use for nutjobbery). All federal law and statutes would be suspended within the zone, especially those like the minimum wage and OSHA that impede free enterprise. I am sure some of the local fatcats would want to stay on to provide employment, unregulated food supplies, and privately funded water and power systems.
Gross violations of environmental law that might affect the outside world (depletion of ground water, heavy air pollution, etc.) would not be dealt with by EPA officials and similar collectivist oppressors, but by air and missile strikes. Weapons would be unrestricted, of course, unless they were fired across the mined and wired border zone, in which case counter-battery fire from restored 16 inch battleship guns would be brought to bear. It’s pretty spectacular, we could make money by charging outsiders to come to the border area and watch. More could be made by basing a reality show in the zone. This is only if we could find qualified camera operators etc. among the inmates, since no sane person would dare go into the place.
All social security, retirement payments, and other federal funds due the inmates would be confiscated to defray the cost of maintaining the border defenses. Anyone who wants out would be held at a border checkpoint, examined for disease and returned to the real world only after two years of service in a federal poverty or environmental program.

Okay but it does have a certain whiff of BS without more corroboration.

The article asks an excellent question-How’d the government know what they were Googling?

Is there a FISA warrant or what that innocent search declared probable cause? So many questions-Did the agencies look at these people at all before the raid for suspicious activity or a record of threats, or connections to any terror group at all?

412 b.d.  Thu, Aug 1, 2013 12:05:17pm
Update 1:45 p.m.: In a conversation with The Atlantic Wire, FBI spokesperson Peter Donald confirmed The Guardian’s report that the FBI was not involved in the visit itself. Asked if the FBI was involved in providing information that led to the visit, Donald replied that he could not answer the question at this point, as he didn’t know.

We asked if the Suffolk and Nassau police, which The Guardian reported were the authorities that effected the raid, are part of the government’s regional Joint Terrorism Task Force. They are, he replied, representing two of the 52 agencies that participate. He said that local police are often deputized federal marshals for that purpose — but that the JTTF “did not visit the residence.” He later clarified: “Any officers, agents, or other representatives of the JTTF did not visit that location.”
