The Tallest Man on Earth in a Tiny Desk Concert

So I could stay the king you see

Just a great little Tiny Desk concert by The Tallest Man on Earth, who’s from Sweden and really isn’t very tall.

Swedish native, Kristian Matsson, a.k.a. The Tallest Man on Earth, plays a few tracks from his debut album “Shallow Grave.”

The Gardener

I sense a runner in the garden
Although my judgements known to fail
Once built a steamboat in a meadow
Cos I’d forgotten how to sail

I know the runner’s going to tell you
There ain’t no cowboy in my hair
So now he’s buried by the daisies
So I could stay the tallest man in your eyes, babe

I sense a spy up in the chimney
From all the evidence I’ve burned
And I guess he’ll read it in the smoke now
And soon to ashes I’ll return

I know the spy is going to tell you
It’s not my flag up in the pole
So now he’s buried by the lilies
So I could stay forever more in your eyes, babe

I sense a leak inside my phone now
From all the lies that I have told
I know he has your private number
And soon he’ll make that vicious call

I know the leak is going to tell you
There ain’t no puppy in your leash
So now he’ll fertilize the roses
So I could stay the king you see
In your eyes, babe

Well now we’re dancing through the garden
And what a garden I have made
And now that death will grow my jasmine
I find it soothing I’m afraid

Now there is no need for suspicion no no
There ain’t no fraud kissing your hand
I won’t be lying when I tell you
That I’m a gardener I’m a man
In your eyes babe

The Tallest Man on Earth is a real nut! Check out his answer to the question about why he became a performer.

Writes great songs and plays great guitar though.

For the guitar players here:
I got my son a Gibson Maestro acoustic guitar before he went off to school in October. It’s an inexpensive one, less than 100 bucks. One of the bridge pins broke and I am having trouble figuring out the size and what type to get to replace them. The ones on it now are plastic and they all appear to be brittle, it’s only a matter of time before they all break. Calling Gibson didn’t go well, their phone lines were so full of noise I couldn’t understand any of the recorded messages to lead me to a live human. I looked at several online stores (Musician’s Friend, Guitar Center, even Amazon) and there seem to be different sizes and materials and I can’t figure out what size to get. Any help you could give would be great, the kid misses having his guitar at school.

Oh look. Nutcase sues NASA.

Rhawn Joseph is an advocate of directed panspermia and has developed his own hypothesis. He believes life did not originate on Earth but was transplanted to Earth by “cosmic seeds” encased in space debris 700 million years after the formation of the Earth. He claims that these genetic seeds filled with DNA contained the genetic instructions for the metamorphosis of all life, including woman and man. He also rejects the neo-Darwinian synthesis, instead replacing it with a form of non-Darwinian evolution which he describes as a “pre-determined evolutionary metamorphosis” which is pre-programmed in DNA of all life on earth.

Joseph has published a number of fringe papers on panspermia with Rudolph Schild[wp] in the Journal of Cosmology. He writes he is an atheist and he often spends much time defending an infinite universe against the Big Bang model, he is also a critic of abiogenesis which he says is not only false but actually a religious belief not rooted in science. Joseph also claims that the Big Bang is a religious belief routed in the Genesis account of the Bible and unsupported by cosmological evidence. Joseph’s views on the origin of life and evolution can be found in his controversial book Astrobiology: The Origins of Life and the Death of Darwinism published in 2001. In the book he claimed that “Contrary to Darwinism… the evidence now clearly indicates, that the evolution of life had been genetically predetermined and precoded…”, he also heavily criticized abiogenesis and supported panspermia.

More nuttery from NASA suing nutcase.

In 1957, a scientist who completed his medical training in Nazi-occupied Poland, and who was funded by the Rockefeller foundation, injected 300,000 Central African men, women, and children, with an experimental polio vaccine — a vaccine that contained a deadly AIDS-like virus, monkey HSIV. Years later, Central Africa would become “Ground Zero” for the AIDS/HIV epidemic…

BTW, I’ve used plastic (ivoroid) for years and they seldom break.

When he restrings the guitar he has to make sure the ball is below the bridge plate in the groove before the pins are pushed in. The pins should have their groove against the bridge groove when they are inserted.

Once the pin is in, the string should be snugged up so the ball is against the pin and still below the plate.

It’s a capo. It changes the key of the guitar without having to re-tune it.

Yes, it’s just a capo, for transposing the key.

It’s a capo and it’s used to raise the pitch of the guitar so bar chords aren’t needed. Gives a more open sound.

I’ll bet the mayor’s brother owns the wrecker service.

Cars left abandoned on surface streets in Leeds towed, owners charged a fee (updated)

blog.al.com

LEEDS, Alabama — Cars abandoned on surface streets in Leeds were towed last night to wrecker lots at the city’s request and owners will have to pay a fee to retrieve them.

“Leeds Police Chief Byron Jackson said cars were towed from Scott City Hill, Parkway Drive and Faye Street. Jackson said no cars were towed from Interstate 20 because Leeds city police do not operate there.

(snip)

“Speaking to Fox 6, Leeds Mayor David Miller said the fees are going to the wrecker service, not the city. Miller said while the towing inconvenienced the drivers, hundreds were served by having the cars cleared from the road.”

I’m going to change my mind about switching the whole site to HTTPS, after checking things out a lot more today. With embedded content from ads and videos and all of that kind of stuff from external sites, it’s really not feasible to run LGF entirely in HTTPS mode. I can only secure the content I directly control, and stuff like MSNBC videos, for example, will load content from lots of non-secure HTTP connections, and that reassuring padlock icon never shows up. There are some other technical reasons too.

Instead I’m going to stick with the original plan and run only the stuff that handles sensitive data with HTTPS, like the registration, confirmation, account settings and sign-in scripts, and continue following the current best practices for security otherwise.

Bloomberg’s viral misquote

“We did not develop this medicine for Indians,” Dekkers said Dec. 3. “We developed it for western patients who can afford it.”

That quote sounded a little too perfectly evil, and I couldn’t find the original anywhere online. So I asked Bayer whether Bloomberg had it wrong. They did.

Here’s what Dekkers actually said, at a Financial Times conference that day, on a panel called “Buffering the Pharma Brand: Restoring Reputation, Rebuilding Trust” (the above link leads to video of the panel and the relevant part starts at about 19:00 in):

“Is this going to have a big effect on our business model? No, because we did not develop this product for the Indian market, let’s be honest. We developed this product for Western patients who can afford this product, quite honestly. It is an expensive product, being an oncology product.

Now you might say this is a distinction without a difference, but obviously the first comes across quite a bit more callously than the second. The difference in tone is the difference between a lightning bug and lightning.

The context of a quote is critical too, and Dekkers here was specifically responding to a question about whether India’s ruling would hurt Bayer’s business prospects. This is not to excuse the chairman’s Kinsley gaffe, or for that matter Big Pharma’s business practices, but the impact of what he said is diluted when you see the real quote.

Here’s a handy little bit of mod_rewrite code you can put in an .htaccess file to always redirect specific pages to the HTTPS versions. This is what I use to make sure nobody accesses these pages in non-secure mode:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule (lgf-account-settings\.php|lgf-user-reg\.php|lgf-confirm\.php|lgf-login\.php)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

On Wednesday, 19:00, in Tbilisi, in front of the former Parliament Building on Rustaveli Ave., Georgian citizens conducted a peaceful demonstration to support Ukraine.

Citizens brought candles to pay tribute to the activists who died for the freedom of Ukraine and sang the Anthem of Ukraine together.

Snow in Florida - according to Wiki - happened 20 times in 20th century (average once every five years, though it tended to come in bunches. Already 14 times since 2000 (again, in bunches).

Former Westchester County DA. She was going to run against Hillary for the Senate seat but pulled an Epic Fail at the presser announcing her candidacy - she left the first page of her speech at home.

Currently a shrieking head somewhere on Fox News.

Yeah, she also served as an ADA, DA, and judge in Westchaster County.

Her ex, Albert Pirro, has been in trouble with the law more than once, and the more sordid aspects of their marriage pretty much guaranteed she’d never have a successful political career—at least not in NY.

Marriage
Jeanine Ferris married Albert Pirro in 1975. They had a son and daughter together. In 2000, Pirro’s husband was convicted of federal tax evasion and conspiracy, which was seen to possibly hurt her legal and political career prospects. In the midst of her 2006 State Attorney General campaign, Pirro revealed that she was the subject of a federal investigation into whether she illegally taped her husband’s conversations in order to catch him committing adultery. The couple announced they were splitting up in November 2007 and finalized their divorce in 2013.

Progressives excited that Obama’s capitalist agenda has been foiled….

Sen. Reid Not Inclined to Put Fast Track Bill for Trade Agreements on the Floor.

Senator Harry Reid has come a long way. He was heavily criticized here over the years, but he has stepped up big time recently. First, refusing to put the Iran sanctions (and handover of our war power to Israel) bill on the floor. Second, he is indicating that he won’t put the legislation for fast track for the TPP and European deal on the floor
….
Without fast track, those deals likely will not pass. :-) This is a good thing. The trade deals have accelerated income inequality. We don’t need new ones.

Iran brushes off Obama’s comments about hindering Iran’s nuclear program
Exclusive: Iran’s Zarif says Obama remarks for ‘domestic consumption’

Zarif said in exclusive comments to CNN that such statements by the White House and the State Department are meant for a domestic audience.

“It doesn’t matter how the Americans try to spin it for domestic consumption. When it comes to Iran, it does matter,” he said.

Surely Agha Zarif doesn’t think Americans are so naive as to be unaware that his remarks are also every bit as much for “domestic consumption” as he claims President Obama’s to be?

Word has reached me that the next round of episodes in the TV series Revolution will take place in none other than LUBBOCK TEXAS. One of the seekers in the stereotyped quest format has been told (by personified nano-tech no less) that the answers to all his questions can be found in Lubbock. He is instructed to look for a 75 ft concrete cowboy. There is no such structure in Lubbock, though there is one in Canyon, 100 miles away.

Of course most of the statements from the Iranian govt are bullshit. They also have a tendency to say different things for domestic and international audiences. During the interview he says he’s writing the Iranian response to the speech, I looked around a bit but didn’t find it. I think Zaif’s statements to CNN were intended for an international audience, I’m not sure what they’re saying domestically but in this case It’s probably the same.

Obama remarks unrealistic, unconstructive: Iran

Iran Foreign Ministry has dismissed remarks made by US President Barack Obama concerning Iran and the region as “unrealistic and unconstructive.” The Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Wednesday that Obama’s comments on Iran’s nuclear activities show his incorrect understanding of Tehran’s commitment to the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities. She added that the US “illusion” about the effect of its anti-Iran sanctions on Iran’s motivation and willingness to engage in nuclear talks is based on a false understanding of Tehran’s commitment to dispel any doubts about the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities. -

With the ubiquity of social media these days, everything should be assumed to be for is for everyone’s consumption. They may try to filter stuff domestically, but they can’t keep all of it out.

FWIW, they watch everything—or at least they try to. Back in the ’90s, I used to have a friend that worked as a “librarian” at the Iranian mission to the UN. His job was to sit there all day, every day surfing the net looking for chats, blog posts, news articles, etc. that mentioned Iran in any way shape or form, and then enter the info into a database.

No doubt they have more sophisticated methods nowadays, since even a roomful or people surfing day & night would no longer be able to keep up.

Microsoft really doesn’t do unsolicited service calls.

It makes it really easy to figure out the scammers.

When I got one of those calls I just said, “No, I don’t have a problem with my computer,” and I hung up. Team Fortress 2 was calling.

When Frau Fugit got one of those calls she said, “That’s really interesting because my husband works in the IT department for the New Zealand Police,” and they hung up. (I don’t, but you probably guessed that.)
