And now I’m getting even more nervous about Ukraine.

Military commanders pledge support to Yanukovych, condemn protesters

Jan. 31, 8:40 p.m. — After two months of unrest, Ukraine’s army got involved in the ongoing political crisis, when the Ministry of Defense unexpectedly issued a Jan. 31 statement, asking President Viktor Yanukovych to “apply measures for stabilizing of situation in the country.”

The commanders called protesters’ occupation of government buildings “inadmissible” and said that “further escalation of confrontation threatens to integrity of the country.”

The decision to send Yanukovych a special letter was made at a general meeting of the ministry’s office the day before and, according to Anatoliy Hrytsenko, an opposition lawmaker and former defense minister, the officers had been pressured to support Yanukovych.

“I know for sure that officers, who were not agreeing to the ‘common approval’ are now being pressured by their commanders and chiefs,” Hrytsenko said on his Facebook page. In its separate statement, the Defense Ministry also denied the reports that army was allegedly involved in assisting the police during the ongoing political crisis. — Oksana Grytsenko

It’s just a matter of time before Yanukovych orders the military to intervene. They really, really want to, and if they’re already offering a denial of assistance to the police, you know they’ve done it.

I’m guessing military response would be without the restraint we saw from police.

By the way, as part of my ongoing mission to keep any data you share with LGF as secure as possible, we’re now migrating user passwords to the very latest ultra-secure “hashing” method. This will mean that even if someone hacks into LGF and gains access to the database, the passwords will be virtually un-crackable.

(This migration is taking place automatically - you don’t need to do anything.)

Background: when your password is stored in our database, it’s put through a “hashing” algorithm that turns it into a random-seeming string of characters. This algorithm works only one way — it can’t be decrypted — but it always produces the same hash from a given input. Then, when you log in, your password is hashed using the same algorithm, and compared to the stored hash.

(That’s simplified a bit - there’s also a random “salt” that gets added to the hash to increase security.)

This means that not even I can know what the actual password is, because it’s never stored in plain text form.

Absolutely right - you should always use a different password for every site that requires signing in.

But with our new hashing algorithm, at least a hacker wouldn’t be able to learn your password from our site even if they get hold of the database.

Extra security is always good and appreciated, but do be careful with word choice. Nothing is “uncrackable”, given enough time and resources. Just depends on how badly someone wants the data. Best to treat all of your sensitive online data as if it already has been compromised, and behave accordingly.
