Fun fact: The Chinese refer to Donald Trump as 唐纳德*特朗普, which is a transliteration of his name: Tang Na De *Te Lang Pu.
Tang is a surname, but it can also mean “to exaggerate,” “empty” or “in vain.”
Na is also a surname, but it can also mean “to receive or accept,” or “to pay (tax).”
De means virtue.
Te means special
Lang means clear or bright
Pu means general, popular or universal.
Make of that what you will.

The U.S. has the largest EEZ in the world, spanning more than 13,000 miles of coastline and containing 3.4 million square nautical miles of ocean, according to Interior Department testimony on the legislation last year.

August has been a very down month, really. I’m hoping that September brings more optimism and happy thoughts. It’s getting off to a good-ish start with the completion of the primary goals of the brown Lincoln project, namely, getting it fully armed and operational.
So this is amusing. I downloaded the Trump says China video from YouTube and tried to share it on youku.com, China’s version of YT. It never saw the light of day. The error message says something to the effect of “too political, so we nuked it.”
I’ll try again after the big 70th anniversary celebration in Beijing. The Party is putting on a big show to commemorate the end of the Japanese occupation next month, and the Net Nannies have tightened up censorship of the ‘Net. The big stock market “correction” and that explosion in Tianjin haven’t helped matters, so the censors are also busy trying to keep netizens quiet about those things.
They’ve also clamped down on VPNs within China, so I hope mine will work once I return in a few days.
Huh. Those razors from Harry’s (current Front Page ad) actually look like a decent buy.
So, I ammm so tired of trips to all the various builder’s supply stores in my part of the world. I decided that the 2 plug outlet with a LED nightlight built in was a freaking good idea. I find that, in my area, only Menards carries it and it is on sale -YEAH!!!
Make a special trip to get it —get two just in case —and it isn’t the right one for a bathroom. I wanted to put it in the powder room. sigh!
Go back, get two that are rated for bathrooms and decided to go with a different color.
One works fine. I have no place else to use this color, so I have to return the back-up I purchased.

August has been.. interesting. Ready for fall.
Hoping for a lot of rain in September, in a pattern that will douse the fires without floods and mudslides. Noticed a few minutes ago that my house is suddenly smelling like woodsmoke; strong in the dining room, much stronger when I stepped outside. The NOAA smoke maps show Denver is on the edge of a major plume, so am hoping this is my neighbor’s chimenea instead of drift from Idaho.
Lots of beautiful pictures of Denali posted, but I find myself wondering what it looks like today, when the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center shows153 active wildfires.
Congrats to Robert Fripp on his VMA win

Honestly, that’s one of the ones I can’t stand, but it is catchy.
The Gannett company now specializes in running stupid letters to the editors in their local news outlets across the country. Creationism and the evils of evolution is one of their specialties.
But so is climate denial derp:
Global cooling is next trend on horizon
If you are in full panic mode after reading letters on global warming (“Global warming is a real threat to way of life” Aug. 25 and “Time get on board and slow down warming” Aug. 25), I suggest you now “Bing” global cooling 2015.
You will find results such as “30 top scientists predict global cooling” and “Study predicts decades of global cooling ahead.”
Also, “Rapid global cooling forecast for 2017” and more. If I have a choice between glaciers pushing down through Ohio and losing a little shore line on the coasts I think I’ll take the warmer temps.
In reality, isn’t the real truth about global warming/cooling is that it’s not a man-made phenomenon but rather a function of Earth’s orbit around the sun and cycles that repeat over thousands of years?
Don Engel, Union
The dude can’t tell real reporting from the fake stuff.
Gannett apparently loves these types of letters because they run them so often. I guess it’s a way to get web clicks.

A former colleague of mine is now the “senior engagement editor” or some such poppycock title at the local Gannett fishwrap. She tells me - and I have no reason to doubt her - that they run those letters because those are the letters they get. If they got smarter letters, they’d gladly run them, or so she claims.

The Pharcyde, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, The Fugees. For old school check out Boogie Down Productions with KRS-One, Public Enemy, old Ice-T, Digital Underground.
Oooo, y’all are reading Ed Piskor’s amazing “Hip Hop Family Tree” webcomic on Boing Boing, right? There are oversized graphic novel versions, too.
First hip-hop album I listened to was Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic.” I was young, probably too young, so it was a sort of forbidden fruit, listening to all those cuss words. I distinctly remember the song “The Day The Niggaz Took Over” and it was such a vivid picture painted of the L.A. Riots, which were completely foreign to me being a white kid in the mountains of Colorado. I was hooked to hip-hop after that.
Dog Span, Roy Rogers and the Badger Bodgers, Trilemma.

To be fair, reporters in the past didn’t have Twitter to post their preliminary takes on current events. I’m sure most journalists have at times made incorrect assumptions about things they’re covering before they do more research and (hopefully) publish accurate stories.
