Just thought I’d pass this along. Don’t want our allotted data we get from one of these multinational corporations getting sucked up for no reason.

I use TweetDeck to make collections of tweets and to see accounts that have blocked me, and that’s it. So I use it rarely. I tried to use it as my Twitter a while back, and it was just too much, too fast. The Twitter web client and mobile clients work just fine for me, there’s still a modicum of “at my own pace.”

First round of paint thinning, good to go. Got the bulk of the old junk off, scrubbed and rinsed off. Got them soaking again for the deep stuff I’ll need the xacto and needle to break free.

Nice thing about acrylic paints is you can just use Simple Green to strip the paint. Especially handy when dealing with plastic pieces.

Thoughts on FTWD after two episodes:

What a collection of unlikeable characters.

Unlikeable but smart - that works in stories. Likeable but stupid - that works too. But unlikeable and stupid is just a bad combination of traits for a set of lead characters.

Yup. A rather heavy handed exploitation of contemporary American events.

The whole riot scene struck me as trying too hard to tie into today’s issues.

As for stupid characters: Especially the lit teacher dad - he’s just written to be too unable to say anything, and his dialogue parts are pretty lame.

It would appear as if the story line is going to expand to a bigger set of leads, with the characters introduced tonight appearing in more episodes.

Wow, that shithead is completely bonkers. Good thing she has a snowball’s chance in hell.

Jill Stein: We should encourage Ukraine to be neutral—we helped foment a coup against a democratically-elected government, [resulting in a government] where ultra-nationalists and ex-Nazis came to power. Imagine the inverse: if Russia did that in Canada—installed a government hostile to us—we saw something like that in Cuban Missile Crisis—that would not be acceptable to us. So let’s not be single-issue—instead of fomenting a hostile Ukraine we should be leading the way in establishing a neutral Ukraine that would allow Russia to not feel under attack. We’ve made great strides—Putin is not a hero—but as Noam Chomsky points out, the Doomsday clock has moved closer to midnight than it has been since 1983. The hostile faceoff with Russia causes that and is entirely misplaced—led by war hawks in Obama administration—especially [Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs] Victoria Nuland, who cheered on an overthrow in Ukraine.

Well the Tiffancy Aching series are technically a young adult stream, but that really only means the lead is juvenile. Stylistically there’s little difference; he didn’t “write down” to any significant extent.

I saw it on the shelves at Paper Plus in Porirua earlier today (UTC+12 if that’s relephant) which means my sister has probably just about finished reading it by now. She got to do a mainstream press interview with PTerry a few years back, which I think she counts as a career highlight.

There are opposition papers being distributed on every newsstand in Russia. You’ve got people demonstrating in the parks. There’s an episode of The West Wing where a Congressman wants the White House’s support to get rid of the penny due to it being wasteful to mint in exchange for him supporting the White House on some other legislation.

The Congressman’s aid meets with Sam Seaborn and while Sam is telling Toby about the meeting he mentions he thinks the aid just wants a reason why they can’t support the proposal:

TOBY: Yeah, but I mean it anyway. What can I do for you today? How can I help you out?

SAM: You can give me a reason why the White House can’t support the elimination of the penny.

TOBY: This is the Legal Tender… Huckleberry Bill?

SAM: Modernization Bill, yeah.

TOBY: We can’t support it ‘cause it’ll never get to the floor.

SAM: Why not?

TOBY: Where’s the Speaker of the House from?

SAM: He’s from Illinois, which, by the way, is the only state where you can put pennies in a toll machine. Why is that, do you suppose?

TOBY: It’s because…

SAM: It’s ‘cause Lincoln’s from Illinois! And… so is the Speaker.

TOBY: Yes.

SAM: Well, that’s a good reason. Well, it’s a dumb reason, but it’s good enough, right?

Well, that accounts for the SS disability for “being crazy” and living in his mom’s basement. But not the imaginary girlfriend & all her imaginary WELFARE MONEYS

Also too: Pell Grants have to be used for college tuition & related expenses (textbooks, lab fees, etc.). You can’t collect a Pell Grant AND “free college tuition”

Of course this whole exercise in wingnut math begs the question of how the guy, living in his mom’s basement, “buys a house”

The person also doesn’t know anything about the tax code. There are objective tests for the claiming of dependents. A head of household gets better (lower) tax rates and a larger deduction, no credit, but that would only matter if the person actually has some taxable income. You also have to have earned income to qualify for the earned income tax credit (EITC).

For each award year, the maximum Pell Grant is only $5,775.

And I guess that this idiot has no idea how much tuition actually costs, right? Commuting to VCU full-time is over $12,000 a year for me.

There’s also no “free Obamacare”, even if you qualify for subsidies, you’re still going to pay some for a plan. In this scenario, she wouldn’t qualify for subsidies because her income is too low (nonexistent), but would probably qualify for Medicaid and the kids would qualify for SCHIP.

What single mom gets a free college education? If that was the case, wouldn’t it stand to reason (yeah, I know, just play along with me…) that there wouldn’t be so many single moms living below poverty? Not to mention the ones who did go to school and have huge student loan debts. Gah. That’s all I have the strength for this morning.

Remember this from 2013?

The edited budget allots $50 rather than $0 to heating, but curiously enough, the Spanish-language sample only allots $30 to heating. Payments for groceries, gas, clothing, and possible childcare expenses are also not accounted for.

With a $20 cap for health insurance, an implied reality that a McDonald’s employee should be working two jobs to get by, and a downright insulting informational video reminder that by not buying a $1 snack every day for 365 days, savings amount to $365, the jokes almost write themselves.

What really frustrates me is that my right wing nephew sends this to me. And he has two disabled sons on SSI.

I have family members who have no health insurance and they refuse to purchase it on the exchanges. Why? because they hate the “N” word in the White House and they will never participate in what they refer to as “N-Word” care.

BTW—they keep telling me that Jesus is going to rapture them up to heaven in a couple weeks. I remind them that they’ve been telling me that since the late 70s…

Quote:

One day, after my father was gone, I talked to my mother about her beliefs. “What happens to the poor, the elderly, the unemployed, the disabled if the Birch society achieves success?”
“It doesn’t matter, not at all,” she told me. “It’s all about the Constitution.”
“The Constitution doesn’t feed a hungry child or help an unemployed man,” I argued.
“That’s not my concern,” she said.
She wagged her finger at me that day. “Our day will come,” she said. “All you socialist-liberals will fail and we’ll be ready.”
In the 2010 elections when very, very right-wing GOPers took over the Congress, I remembered my mother’s prediction. And I realized she was right.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Was away for most of the weekend, so I come back to a tweetstorm regarding renaming Mt. McKinley as Denali.

Really? This is what the right wing is left with? They’re upset that President Obama is renaming a mountain that has historically been called Denali, Denali? The National Park Service unit is already called Denali National Park. This harmonizes the names, and I see nothing wrong with it.

Do these people not recall that Boulder Dam (which is actually located in Black Canyon) was first named Boulder Dam, then Hoover Dam, then Boulder Dam, and then finally renamed by an act of Congress during Truman’s term as Hoover Dam? Or that there’s a history of renaming landmarks, buildings, structures, and even mountains? This is restoring a name that belonged to the point for a long time.

It’s hardly the first NPS site to have a name controversy either. Devil’s Tower is another site whose name has long been criticized by Native Americans, who’d want to see the name changed - to Bear Lodge.

According to the National Park Service Native Americans originally called the tower “Bear Lodge” which was mistakenly translated to “Bad Gods” then later called “Devils Tower,” and some Native Americans find the name very offensive.

Ogden Driskill’s family settled as ranchers in the Devils Tower area over 130 years ago, he now owns ten thousand acres surrounding the park, his family even has a private cemetery next to the tower.

Driskill who is against the name change says no matter what happens, someone is going to be upset.

“Like a lot of politically correct things, feelings get hurt either way. We’ve all got better things to do with our time than fight with Native Americans over terminology that is offensive or not. There’s 21 tribes here and you’ve got to keep in mind that each tribe conquered another tribe and moved them out.” Driskill continued, “So who does hold the naming rights to Devils Tower, should it be the last conqueror or the first that was there?”

Changing the name of Denali is the least that can be done to correct historical wrongs.

Minor quibble that does not detract from your point, FDA has no jurisdiction over meat, that is USDA’s purview. But. They have an answer to this question. The ubiquitous “the free-market preserves all and is better than the goobernmint” argument. Never mind the fact that outside of UL and a few other nominal inspection systems voluntarily set up by the market that do work, there is no way that the market can deal with the forces that need to exist with enforcing wrongdoing.

UL and those other organizations are safety standards that have no force of law. Economic fraud; is the lb of butter really a lb>? And if not, how does the magical hand of the market actually enforce the weight disparity? Does that olive oil actually contain 100% fruit oil and not 90% corn oil/10% fruit? Etc.

When you get into the realm of food safety, the problem is magnified by many many orders of magnitude. Localizing source of food borne illness outbreak requires the resources of a national organization that has access to records of sourcing, production and sales. This in nothing that can be done from a profit based organization without increasing the cost of food significantly. If you don’t want food safety as part of your daily life (like not really having to think about it) fine, but I really do, I know the extent to which food producers will short-shrift safety over profit when there are no repercussion.

Ridiculous. The greatest periods of American growth happened when the federal income taxes was north of 70%. And before you cite Reagan, the man oversaw the tripling of the national deficit, as well as one of the largest expansions of the federal workforce. He also signed 11 separate tax increases, almost all of them falling exclusively upon the poor and middle classes.

Not only did we have a large upper income tax (90% in the 50s, 70% in the 60s) which fed money back into the economy, we saw development of the internet and the space program among others, and I dare you to find a program started by a company since that has had as much influence as those two.

Keeping government spending tamped down helps keep taxes low, which enables economic growth better than most government programs.

Keeping government spending tamped down is certainly a laudable goal - as long as you’re talking about keeping all government spending tamped down. The party that most vocally advocates for spending cuts only wants to cut spending on the social safety net. It wants to increase defense spending and it’s happy with petroleum and Ag subsidies. It is penny wise and pound foolish. It doesn’t actually want to cut spending, it wants to ensure that all that lovely money goes to line the already well-lined pockets of special interests.

I welcome a clear-eyed discussion of spending cuts as long as all spending is on the table. Anything else is a smash and grab.

Answer: I’m pretty sure it isn’t and Congress should limit that increase to Defense, Justice, and the actual Law enforcement parts of Homeland Security. Pay elsewhere should remain frozen, both to keep spending down and to reduce the Federal workforce by inducing its members to quit.

Spoken like a true fiscal conservative who knows nothing about how the government works. FU DF. You have no idea what the hell you are speaking of. The actual pay that Feds get is a nominal aspect of the total cost of Feds budget. Fixed costs such as infrastructure, perquisites, etc. far outweigh the salaries.

You are basically saying (ignorantly) “balance the budget on the backs of 2.5 million citizens (who spent 5 years getting ZERO pay increases) because it makes you feel like is ‘saves’ money.” Well, all that money that is (not really) being saved is not being put back into the economy of MD, DC and VA (where a majority of Feds live and work)

So, thank you for being a selfish ass and saying Feds don’t deserve to recompensed for their job no matter what level of excellence that they achieve while supporting your lazy non-servicing ass. FU again for good measure.

You gotta read this one—seriously:

Florida dentist accused of unnecessarily pulling kids’ teeth in scam: ‘Medicaid paid him per tooth’

The lawsuits and investigations were launched after Brandi Motley posted a photo of her 6-year-old daughter on Facebook in May accusing the dentist of pulling seven teeth from the girl’s mouth after ordering her from the examination room.

“The nurse suggested that it’s best, that kids act better when parents aren’t in the room, so they said, ‘We don’t like parents back here for the procedures,” Motley said.

Motley said she waited three hours before a nurse warned her daughter had been involved in an “incident” — and she found the girl hyperventilating and covered in blood.

“She takes her gauze out and I notice that all of her teeth were gone,” Motley said.

The girl said Schneider hit and choked her before pulling her teeth, and Motley called police twice — but the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said no report was filed in the case.

If, as is expected, her lawyers make the same arguments to the Justices that they have made in lower courts, Davis will be claiming that her First Amendment rights to exercise her religion protect her from having to issue marriage licenses that, to her, foster a violation of her faith. She is claiming protection not only under the First Amendment religious freedom clause, but also under a Kentucky law that seeks to protect the exercise of religious freedom.

Part of her arguments in lower courts have cited the comments that Justice Anthony M. Kennedy made in the majority opinion in Obergefell, indicating that the decision did not bar those who oppose same-sex marriage for religious reasons from continuing to express their faith principles in reaction to the decision.

She also has contended that the governor’s order to issue licenses to same-sex marriage interferes with her right of free speech under the First Amendment.

Oh, and as Columbo would have said. “Oh, just one more little thing…”

Rowan County Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis claims that her office will not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because doing so offends her religious convictions. Now you can add hypocrisy to the imbecility of this woman, this civil servant, whose real objective is to demonstrate her disapproval of gay people by refusing service. There had been unconfirmed suggestions of Davis’ marital history but now the AP reports:

Davis testified that the Bible teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman and that sex outside of marriage is a sin. Court records indicate Davis herself married when she was 18 in 1984, filed for divorce 10 years later, and then filed for divorce again, from another husband, in 2006.

Many Christians believe divorce also is a sin, and an attorney for the same-sex couples repeatedly questioned her about this in court. Asked if she would religiously object to issuing a marriage license to someone who has been divorced, she said “That’s between them and God.

Quickly skimming through Kennedy’s opinion in Obergefel, I found that he wrote this:

Finally, it must be emphasized that religions, and those who adhere to religious doctrines, may continue to advocate with utmost, sincere conviction that, by divine precepts, same-sex marriage should not be condoned. The First Amendment ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to theirlives and faiths, and to their own deep aspirations to continue the family structure they have long revered. The same is true of those who oppose same-sex marriage for other reasons. In turn, those who believe allowing same-sex marriage is proper or indeed essential, whether as a matter of religious conviction or secular belief, may engage those who disagree with their view in an open and searching debate. The Constitution, however, does not permit the State to bar same-sex couples from marriage on the same terms as accorded to couples of the opposite sex.

I keep having to explain that point to the chuckleheads who defend her.

She ran in a public election for a public office that issues marriage licenses. It’s her job. She can’t suddenly claim a religious exemption for the job she ran for.

The Sixth got it right. She’s free to practice her faith privately. No one is stopping her or interfering with her private religious views. She just can’t force those religious views on her office or on the rest of the county like she’s been doing. She cannot impose her religious views on everyone else in her role as county clerk, which is what she’s doing.

I think my favorites are the trolls who herp derp with the WHY DON’T TEH GHEY JUST DRIVE TO TEH NEXT COUNTY fail. Right. Because they’d be singing the same tune if this clerk was refusing to issue gun licenses on religious grounds. Pffft.

In case you were wondering, which I’m sure so many of you were, 10^i is approximately -.6682+.74398i. You can use Python to compute this for you.

How exactly is it constitutional for the president to raise federal employee pay without the consent on Congress?

Answer: I’m pretty sure it isn’t and Congress should limit that increase to Defense, Justice, and the actual Law enforcement parts of Homeland Security. Pay elsewhere should remain frozen, both to keep spending down and to reduce the Federal workforce by inducing its members to quit.

Remember when you had no idea about how tax brackets worked, didn’t understand the difference between nominal and effective rate? This is kind of like that but with a routine, already budgeted cost of living adjustment entire within the Executive branch’s discretionary authority.

Let’s face it, Greece was a mess and short of flat out debt forgiveness nothing much was going to make it smooth sailing. In the UK they implemented some modest austerity measures a few years back that they got a lot of crap for and now are one of the healthier economies around. re: #327 It’s on his hat!

I usually refer to them as “car crashes” and not “accidents,” because it’s usually faulty judgment or action that is the root cause.

The same verbiage should be used for “accidental” gun discharges.

Describing such shootings as “accidental” immediately removes both personal responsibility and the entire chain of poor practices and stupidity that lead up to them.

Person has a weird view of “investigative journalism”. So a “journalist” can just come into my house, go through my stuff to try and find something incriminating/interesting to write about? Don’t think so, there are laws against that. Just as there are laws about recording someone without their consent.

Agree. But like you were pointing out, sometimes the phrase has to stick in people’s heads. The version you wrote didn’t very well. Using carelessly in the sentence will make people uncomfortable.

Really. How many are illegally getting into Canada in order to get into the US?

You don’t praise someone in a neo-conservative publication by noting:

Buchanan became politically radioactive in some circles in the 1990s, largely because of the perceived anti-Semitism of his occasional qualified praise for Hitler, his flirtations with Holocaust denial, and his ceaseless criticism of Israel and its supporters.

One of the problems with the criticism of austerity measures is that they are rarely implemented before a nation is already in the shitter. Let’s face it, Greece was a mess and short of flat out debt forgiveness nothing much was going to make it smooth sailing. In the UK they implemented some modest austerity measures a few years back that they got a lot of crap for and now are one of the healthier economies around. As in all things scale and timing matter.

Well…yes to a certain extent. But austerity is always the answer in conservative politics. No matter what the current economic situation really requires.

Surely you remember when he was giving a speech in Ohio with the Ohio flag in the frame and the wingnuts were all verklempt because he’d invented an “Obama flag” for himself?

good times!

Radio host Bob Grant asserted that Obama created an ” ‘O’ flag,” but apparent flag in question was Ohio’s

On the October 15 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Bob Grant said: “[W]hat is that flag that Obama’s been standing in front of that looks like an American flag, but instead of having the field of 50 stars representing the 50 states, there’s a circle?” He then said: “Is the circle the ‘O’ for Obama? Is that what it is?” Grant later said: “[D]id you notice Obama is not content with just having several American flags, plain old American flags with the 50 states represented by 50 stars? He has the ‘O’ flag. And that’s what that ‘O’ is. That’s what that ‘O’ is. Just like he did with the plane he was using. He had the flag painted over, and the ‘O’ for Obama. Now, these are symptom — these things are symptomatic of a person who would like to be a potentate — a dictator.” ‘
