Why are these GOP debate only asking about known failure points? Ok, they’re good to know that Carly doesn’t feel she fucked up and Rubio’s financial issues are all “made up by political foes” but can’t they ask a policy question? Ever?

At least Mondale got to be VP. Carter would have had trouble winning in 1976 without him, and he really expanded the role of the office.

re: #1 The Vicious Babushka

Ummm, very sorry it’s just not accurate.
ssa.gov

Which political party took Social Security from the independent trust fund and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?

There has never been any change in the way the Social Security program is financed or the way that Social Security payroll taxes are used by the federal government. The Social Security Trust Fund was created in 1939 as part of the Amendments enacted in that year. From its inception, the Trust Fund has always worked the same way. The Social Security Trust Fund has never been “put into the general fund of the government.”

Most likely this question comes from a confusion between the financing of the Social Security program and the way the Social Security Trust Fund is treated in federal budget accounting. Starting in 1969 (due to action by the Johnson Administration in 1968) the transactions to the Trust Fund were included in what is known as the “unified budget.” This means that every function of the federal government is included in a single budget. This is sometimes described by saying that the Social Security Trust Funds are “on-budget.” This budget treatment of the Social Security Trust Fund continued until 1990 when the Trust Funds were again taken “off-budget.” This means only that they are shown as a separate account in the federal budget. But whether the Trust Funds are “on-budget” or “off-budget” is primarily a question of accounting practices—it has no effect on the actual operations of the Trust Fund itself.

That’s patently untrue. Now a lot of families did emigrate with a relative already here, yes, that was quite common but someone who was a citizen, very unlikely. Someone should have the balls to ask Rubio if he thinks the wet policy that applies to Cubans should apply to all immigrants. Or better yet ask him why he lied about his parents fleeing Castro before Castro even got into power.

Huckabee: “I do not want to walk my five grand-kids through the charred remains of a once-great country called America.”

stolen from the peroration of webster’s second reply to hayne:

When my eyes shall be turned to behold for the last time the sun in heaven, may I not see him shing on the broken and dishonored fragments of a once glorious Union; on States dissevered, discordant, belligerent; on a land rent with civil feuds, or drenched, it may be, in fraternal blood! Let their last feeble and lingering glance rather behold the gorgeous ensign of the republic, now known and honored throughout the earth, still full high advanced, its arms and trophies streaming in their original lustre, not a stripe erased or polluteddd, not a single star obscured, bearing for its motto, no such miserable interrogatory as “What is all this worth?” nor those other words of delusion and folly, “Liberty first and Union afterwards”; but everywhere, spread all over in characters of living light, plazing on all it sample folds, as they float over the sea and over the land, and in every wind under the whole heavens, that other sentiment, dear to every true American heart, - Liberty and Union, now and for ever, one and inseperable!

I will count myself among the fortunate few that I didn’t have an opportunity to watch the Clown Car Caravan. I’ll just catch up via the thread, or simply imagine people saying the dumbest, most short-sighted things I can imagine. Should approximate the experience nicely. One of my co-workers just turned 21, and I went to the party for her at a local beer-pub. Her first chance to drink (legally).

I don’t drink anymore (personal choice), but some of the beers there almost made me wish I could. Food was pretty good, the waitress kept my soda coming, and a good time was had by all.

Now to catch up on some paperwork and off to bed.

I can’t justify another console (already have a Wii U) but if I didn’t have a PC that I could upgrade to meet the bare minimum specs for Fallout 4, XBox One would have been my choice. I really hope my PC can handle it, and the creation kit, so I can write some mods.

We’ve got an aging XBox 360 and we’ve been putting off buying an XBox One for a while. Now with all these games coming out and us possibly switching to Google Fiber in the near future, the time is right to buy a new console. We’ll probably use the old one as a trade-in to knock some of the price off.

See what happens when you’re irrelevant. //

Less than a week after the killings in Charleston, S.C., Amazon, Walmart and eBay banned the sale of items bearing the symbol, also known as the “Southern Cross.” Conservative Southern politicians who had never said a critical word about the flag, along with many who had defended it as a legitimate and non-racist symbol of Southern heritage, came out against it. Writers like Charles Johnson of the Little Green Footballs blog penned thoughtful essays about why it should finally come down. On July 5, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley ordered a variety of Confederate flags removed from the statehouse grounds. And on July 8, encouraged by conservative Gov. Nikki Haley, the South Carolina legislature passed a law that mandated the removal of the battle flag. […]
