My mother is at O’Hare today (she works as a musician). She told me last night on the telephone if a protest were to start at the airport again, she would join it.

Yay, Mom. Seventy-six years old and still a hippie commie protester.

Me, where I live protesting is somewhat a moot point. Something something several light years from civilisation.

That said, I have Internet service so I can agitate on-line to those I know who live in more populated areas, like a town of two hundred or larger.

I just posted an essay to the Nebraska-W Iowa Mensa group. That group has turned into a hotbed of political activism - and most of the members live in Council Bluffs, Omaha, and Lincoln.

Basically, it is an essay pointing out that it is times like these that test the nation’s mettle. Which side will you be on.

There’s a whole unwritten Constitution: rules about what you do and do not do. Trump is shredding this in the executive branch. The problem with having Congress call him on it is that the Congressional Republicans have been doing the same with the unwritten legislative rules since 2009, and it’s hard to see what would cause them to stop now.

OK, folks - I actually have a system now where I could provide two-factor login at LGF, if people are interested in making their login information much more secure.

We already have lots of layers of protection against passwords getting hacked, but this would take it to the next level and make it nearly impossible for a hacker to impersonate you at LGF.

This system would work not by sending an SMS to your mobile phone, but by using an authenticator app. An authenticator app gives you a six-digit code that you’d enter when signing in, in addition to your password. The big advantage of using an authenticator app is that you don’t even need to have a cell phone connection. There are quite a few authenticator apps available for all kinds of desktop and mobile devices.

Setting up the authenticator app is extremely simple - all you do is use your phone’s camera to scan a QR code displayed on your screen. When it’s all set, your account is safe even if someone gets your password somehow.

So… anyone interested? It would be an optional feature, of course. (I think I might implement it just for myself even if no one else is interested, because password hacking is becoming rampant on the web.)

The moral mettle of the nation will be tested in the coming weeks. Already the administration tried (and failed) to ban people for religious and political views (against Trump) from entering the country yesterday, deporting some to certain death, tearing apart families, &c. Border crossings with Canada turned away people as well. Canada is outraged that one of Prime Minister Trudeau’s cabinet members was banned from the USA.

Massive protests at airports across the nation were organised, lawyers organised to protect rights of those detained, and an emergency appeal in Federal Court suspended the Executive Order implementing the ban. At least for now, the courts are still upholding the Constitution. (And yes, the Bill of Rights applies to foreigners on our soil as well, despite what fools on the political right say.)

Where are all the conservative reactionaries that decried every executive order from President Obama (the president who issued the fewest since Woodrow Wilson)? They are cheering Donald Trump on. How about the times President Obama went out golfing? (Trump owns golf courses around the world and plays golf as well.) They even whinged about President Obama wearing a tan suit (though Trump does the same).

Yeah, those conservative reactionaries are demanding a political opponent (Hillary Clinton) be jailed for (pick a fever dream of conspiratorial nonsense). The are demanding jailing a political opponent without charges of a crime.

We have been here before. In the First Red Scare, socialist politicians were arrested and jailed. In the Second Red Scare, Senator Joe McCarthy (R-Wisconsin) accused people all the way up to President Dwight D. Eisenhower of being secret communists on the floor of the Senate. FBI Director Herbert Hoover used the power of the FBI to go after left-leaning political organisations and civil rights groups. They were eventually all defeated.

Which churches, which politicians, what press outlets, and which people will stand in the face of those who seek to tear our nation apart for profit, a fascist kleptocracy? Right now, the only thing helping us is almost none of these fools have any clue how government works. (Right now we have a kakistocracy, or government by the least qualified and most corrupt.)

Who will these fools appoint to the empty Supreme Court seat? Representative Louie Gohmert (R- Texas 1st), also known as the Dumbest Man in Congress (see Google again)? Why not? He is a religious fanatic and was once a Federal judge (shudder). He’s a wonderful apparatchik.

Politicians, military personnel, civil servants, and political appointees are all required by oath or affirmation to uphold and defend the Constitution. I have lived under that affirmation as either a US Navy enlisted seaman or a politician all my adult life. I did not affirm to uphold a general, a president, a corporation, or a minister. I affirmed I would uphold the Constitution for the reason given at the end of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address during the Civil War:

At this point, I can only assume Congressional Republicans are hoping that all of this will “just blow over,” that somebody is going to step in and save them from Trump. They were betting on the courts stepping in, slapping Trump’s hand, and he would back down. But he hasn’t, he doubled down and effectively dared the courts to enforce their ruling. So who is it that they expect to save them from him and his wrath? Because if he can tell the courts today to STFD, then tomorrow he’s going to tell Congress that he doesn’t need them in order to pass laws. Who do they look to then, the very courts that they’re silently agreeing have no power over him?

OK, folks - I actually have a system now where I could provide two-factor login at LGF, if people are interested in making their login information much more secure.

We already have lots of layers of protection against passwords getting hacked, but this would take it to the next level and make it nearly impossible for a hacker to impersonate you at LGF.

This system would work not by sending an SMS to your mobile phone, but by using an authenticator app. An authenticator app gives you a six-digit code that you’d enter when signing in, in addition to your password. The big advantage of using an authenticator app is that you don’t even need to have a cell phone connection. There are quite a few authenticator apps available for all kinds of desktop and mobile devices.

Setting up the authenticator app is extremely simple - all you do is use your phone’s camera to scan a QR code displayed on your screen. When it’s all set, your account is safe even if someone gets your password somehow.

So… anyone interested? It would be an optional feature, of course. (I think I might implement it just for myself even if no one else is interested, because password hacking is becoming rampant on the web.)

From what I understand about Brexit in NI, it was largely on sectarian ties. Catholic areas more likely to support remaining and Protestant areas more likely to support leaving. You’re right though. IT could be the impetus for the unification of the two countries. Was really glad to see Nicola Sturgeon come out strongly in support of the refugees too. The SNP seems to me to be a rare nationalist party that does not use racism as part of its appeal and I respect them a lot for that.

OK, folks - I actually have a system now where I could provide two-factor login at LGF, if people are interested in making their login information much more secure.

We already have lots of layers of protection against passwords getting hacked, but this would take it to the next level and make it nearly impossible for a hacker to impersonate you at LGF.

This system would work not by sending an SMS to your mobile phone, but by using an authenticator app. An authenticator app gives you a six-digit code that you’d enter when signing in, in addition to your password. The big advantage of using an authenticator app is that you don’t even need to have a cell phone connection. There are quite a few authenticator apps available for all kinds of desktop and mobile devices.

Setting up the authenticator app is extremely simple - all you do is use your phone’s camera to scan a QR code displayed on your screen. When it’s all set, your account is safe even if someone gets your password somehow.

So… anyone interested? It would be an optional feature, of course. (I think I might implement it just for myself even if no one else is interested, because password hacking is becoming rampant on the web.)

Just an addendum on using an authenticator app/dongle for TFA: if you lose your phone/dongle and you don’t have a paper copy of your QR code and temporary keys locked away, you’re boned.

I know this from personal experience after I reset my phone (wiping out Google Authenticator’s data in the process) and didn’t remove TFA from my Amazon and EA/Origin accounts beforehand; it was a complete PITA to recover, but, fortunately, I was able to.

Ok, OT time.

I’m known as the Photographer at church. So today I got given a decent - not high end but not garbage cheap either - Nikkor AF lens, the 28 - 105/3.5-4.5 lens. Now I have a Nikon F adaptor for my Micro4/3 cameras as I use a Nikkor 50/1.4 non-AI as a portrait length lens. But compared to zooms on m4/3, it’s big, bulky and hard to manually focus. SO Nikon users what is a decent but cheap body to use with this lens? I’d probably play with it a little bit then give it to my son or some other younger person in need of something more than a cell phone.

Ideas?

I have hesitated doing this for other sites since it wants another cell (besides my primary) which I do not have.

How would the scan code be recognized on a phone?

A federal judge granted an emergency stay Saturday night for citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries who have already arrived in the US but on Sunday morning the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying President Donald Trump’s travel ban will not affect the overall implementation of the White House executive action.

That triggered another day of protest across the country including the one in Omaha that began early Sunday afternoon.

The local crowd came equipped with signs stating “No Hate,” and “Facts not Fear.”

The American flag flew as hundreds assembled in opposition to the president’s actions.

For digital, I’d go with a D3300 or D5300. Their upgrades — D3400 and 5400 — offer wifi IIRC. I have a D3300 and love it.

With a 12 mp camera as my primary, I’ve learned that more may be nice but once you’re above the 10mp level, most people won’t notice till your prints are in the 16x20 or larger range.

Thanks for the info. I was always a Canon guy (except for a fling with a F2 for a couple of years) or now micro 4/3, so my knowledge of Nikon is weak.

Chelsea Dappen, a senior at Nebraska Wesleyan University, passionately spoke against Trump.

Dappen, a sexual assault survivor, was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder four years ago. She said that her PTSD was triggered by the president-elect and that she refuses to be neutral about the election.

“As a sexual assault survivor, I know firsthand the dangers of neutrality and becoming a bystander.” Dappen said. “In our culture, we’re trained to mind our own business and not stir the pot. Sometimes, the pot needs stirred.”

Dappen said comments Trump made to Billy Bush in a recorded conversation in 2005 were an admittance to sexual assault.

Customs agents are not constitutional lawyers. They follow the orders they are given, and right now the Department of Homeland Security is defying the Federal courts.

The average border patrol agent is no more understanding of the law than my cat (or most Americans).

My guess here is DHS did not pass along that customs agents were ordered arrested if they defied the court.

The problem here is the Federal Marshal’s Service is under President Bannon’s DOJ.

International zones in airports are fully under the jurisdiction of the country where they are located and local laws apply. Persons caught committing an unlawful act (e.g. possession of contraband such as illegal drugs) in the international zone are liable for prosecution.

This is partly what I predicted last night, that the Administration would use the courts focus on the term “removal” to deny relief to those who technically hadn’t cleared customs and therefore entered the United States. What I didn’t predict is that they’d be brazen enough to try this shit on US soil, I thought they’d be smart enough to simply focus on denying boarding at foreign airports. What they’re doing instead is daring the Court to enforce its order domestically, which is incredibly dangerous territory.

In the early morning hours of January 28th, a fire broke out in the Victoria Islamic Center in Victoria, TX. It quickly destroyed the whole building. The cause has not officially been determined.

Two weeks ago, another mosque, the Islamic Center of Lake Travis, in Austin, TX, burned. Again, the cause of the fire has not been officially determined.

Both mosques have previously been vandalized. And the mosque in Victoria was burglarized last week.

Regardless of the causes of these fires, the Libertarian Party extends sympathy to the Muslim communities in these towns and across America.

Years back, Iranian brothers were detained for several years by the Iranian regime on claims of espionage. The Alaei brothers. They were doctors/health experts who were trying to do good deeds - helping reduce the spread of AIDS/HIV in Iran. They were arrested, tried in a 1-day show trial, and sentenced to prison.

After serving several years in prison, they were released. They returned to the US.

They are currently working at my alma mater, but I wonder if they’d ever be allowed to leave the US and return under our regime’s current policy.

There are competing theories to explain the decline in the abortion rate. But the decline also aligned with a historic spike in new, state-level abortion restrictions.

Some data - such as trends in contraception usage - that could help determine the reasons for the decline are not yet available for 2014. Still, the researchers predicted that the drop in the abortion rate had less to do with new restrictions than with changes in contraception usage and a reduction in unintended pregnancies.

He’s been a problem for far too long to be considered sensible now on one or two issues.

He is just embarrassed the party has gotten farther along than he hoped and that an ugly Republican president is in control. He wanted the typical conservative slickster that was more sensible and didn’t show his ass as has Trump.

All that is happening is it makes Billy look bad. Fuck him.

I’m a Nashvillian and I went looking for info; this is all that I’ve found as of right now:

Speakers included Mayor Megan Barry and Vice Mayor David Briley. The protest began about 3 p.m. and was peaceful.

Until it began to disband.

About 4:30 p.m., as the mass of protesters was leaving, several protesters reported being tapped by a vehicle passing through the intersection. Several people took photographs of protesters lying on top of the hood of an SUV.

Nashville police were called and began an investigation. No more details were immediately available.
