Photos of the Day: Donald and Melania, Dressed for a Hurricane

Politics • Views: 40,226

Here we see our so-called president, with wife Melania appropriately dressed to visit a disaster area in bomber jacket and Manolo stiletto heels.

And here we see the dynamic duo arriving in Texas, with Melania sans bomber jacket but sporting her brand new FLOTUS cap.

Good grief.

Still holding at 35% approval, per Gallup. That’s basically the Confederacy and the western states that have ten people each. The Rust Belt is gone.

Saw this:

I bet he’s buying these up at $2.59 a pop (maybe even less), and selling them for $40.

The right wing canard I’m seeing is liberals are hypocrites for criticizing Osteen because we believe in separation of church and state. How many times have we been told by conservatives that churches are a better form of charity than the government? Osteen chose to be an asshole. I don’t like questioning anyone’s religious beliefs but oyu know what, I will question Osteen’s because his whole schtick has nothing to do with Christianity, it’s always been a get rich quick scheme for him. His brand of Christianity is nothing but a confidence scheme for people who want to be greedy as hell and yet still feel pious.

Katy Tur just said FEMA figures at the minimum 450,000 people are going to need help with their homes. I figure they mean 450,000 single home or apartment structures.

Damn.

NOLA had roughly 500,000 people living there when Katrina hit. Afterwards, that dropped to 230,000. It’s bounced back a bit to 384,000.

A significant number of those who fled NOLA went to Harris County in Texas. That’s greater Houston area.

That gives you some idea of the scope/size of the damage here.

My brothers are also 5 minutes apart.

And yet, throughout our entire lives, there’s never been any question about who’s the first-born, eldest son. If you spent time with them, got to really know their personalities, hobbies, sense of humor and everything else, you’d swear there was 5 years difference.

The time stamp on the video is in day/month/year format instead of month/day/year which would be odd in the US. Not proof but it does lend credence to this being somewhere else.

And it does seem like the guy is not unfamiliar with doing a suspect search and the way he is holding his gun made me think he was cop right from the start. Even if he is it doesn’t mean this wasn’t messed up, though audio would be helpful.

I’m getting a distinct sense of deja vu between this and Katrina. Lots of focus on Houston, which rightfully so is due to the size/scope of flooding. But communities outside Houston were wiped out entirely.

Back in Katrina, there was focus on NOLA, but entire towns like Slidell were nearly wiped out, and those in the parishes south of NOLA took it even harder.

They’re still trying to get into many of these areas in TX due to the widespread damage.

Agree that you can never really be ready. But risks should be assessed. From my link, two more excerpts:

The Houston Ship Channel and the energy-related businesses that line it are widely described as irreplaceable. The 52-mile waterway connects Houston’s massive refining and petrochemical complex to the Gulf of Mexico.

For all its economic importance, though, the Ship Channel also is the perfect conduit to transport massive storm surge into an industrial area that also is densely populated.

The storm models that scientists have created show that Houston’s perfect storm would push water up the Ship Channel, topping out at a height of more than 30 feet above sea level. The surge would be only slightly lower in Clear Lake.

That’s higher than the highest storm surge ever recorded on the U.S. coast — 27.8 feet during Hurricane Katrina. And it would be almost entirely unabated. Unlike New Orleans, whose levee system failed during that 2005 storm and was rebuilt after, Houston has no major levee system to begin with.

[edit] Of course, it wasn’t a storm surge that’s hurting the Houston area this time, but a major storm stalled over the area. That’s a scenario where levees might even make matters worse.

They’re absolutely determined to try and make the pivot argument, despite all the evidence that shows Trump is exactly who he has always been - a no talent assclown who (in no particular order):
will never ever show empathy;
lacks all interest in learning anything necessary to do the job of president;
is uninterested in being president except for the perks of pomp/circumstances and golfing on the taxpayer dime;
giving the white supremacists and bigots the ability to undermine civil and voting rights nationally; and
who doesn’t care who he does business with so long as he profits and sticks the bill to someone else.

Most in the main stream media will do all that they can to avoid real reporting on tr*mp because that would raise too many follow-up questions, the most pressing of which is how did the Republicans degenerate to this state?

Those questions lead straight back to the plutocracy itself, including its ownership of the media. So naturally ownership does all it can to turn the news into a meaningless circus act.

Trump epitomizes rich, white boy privilege. He’s mentally deficient, and if it weren’t for his family’s money, he’d be working some blue-collar job somewhere in Queens.

More tragically he epitomizes the way our system protects inherited wealth at all our expense.
After a lifetime of screwing business partners, investors, contractors, employees, etc and avoiding taxes at all costs, his ilk demand to be relieved of inheritance taxes as a form of social justice.

IMO this nonsense is coming from media ownership.

In part there’s a culture of “don’t rock the boat.” But another part of the equation is something Charles Pierce noted ages ago, that for a brief moment after Watergate the media realized it had the power to bring down an American president and recoiled in horror at the implication. And thus ever since the effort has been to maintain some measure of “normality” but smoothing out bumps in the road as “business as usual.”

“It’s primarily the daughters, the sisters, the wives, the mothers,” said Melissa Radloff, project manager of a nonprofit organization called Legacy Corps, whose volunteers provide respite for caregivers. “These are the people who step up. … They have to come up with some kind of resilience, some kind of strength day to day.”

So Winkler makes her regular rounds: Tuesdays and Thursdays to the grocery store for donations, the dumpster for produce, the food bank. Wednesday mornings to Ashley Manor, where she knocks and hopes the man she married 31 years ago greets her with a glimmer of recognition.

I am just about ready to dissolve in tears.
This was my father-in-law taking care of the love of his life at home until she passed.
Then he ended up with dementia in an assisted living facility in South Carolina that was over-priced (in excess of $10K/month) and extremely short on any sort of actual “assistance”. (He fell at least 3 times in as many months, splitting open his head, because he “had places to go, things to do” but no one was paying any attention…)
And then he just gave up and left us last November.

I’ve some to the sad conclusion that conservatives have no desire to interact with anyone other than other conservatives. They just don’t give a fuck about others (or facts for that matter). Fuck em.

While Trump was speaking up on the fire engine they had formed a barrier in front of him with the USSS SUVs.
Also, it definitely looked like they kept all the “villagers” on the other side of a fence, a good distance away.
I kind of understand that, IF, they had reduced support from local LEO’s for crowd control & surveillance.
A bit disgusted with the waste of resources being used for photo op efforts.

Duh. I wonder if it has ever crossed your “conservative friend’s” mind that it’s not a good idea for a FL to visit a disaster area where thousands of Americans are facing great adversity while wearing a pair of designer shoes that cost thousands of dollars to purchase? I own some Manolo Blahniks, so I know what they sell for. Mine are not in the price range of the ones Melania wore to Corpus Christi, and I bought mine when they were on sale. Someone should have told her a pair of hiking boots/low-heel pumps would have been a better choice for the occasion/photo-op. I think Melania was wearing sneakers by the time they were sitting at the table in the fire station.

It’s just not possible for leadership to come out of a disaster with gains. That’s the nature of the beast. Christie and Obama got off as lightly as possible. And we haven’t even seen the really bad part of Harvey’s impact yet. When the camera crews are gone the insurance adjusters take over.

Ummm…Mr. Deb, Sir? Unless I grabbed the wrong reply link, that was about the Nashville Statement again…

I actually saw a comment somewhere that she HAD to wear it so in case there was an emergency, they would be able to identify her. Uh huh.

Because Melania would blend in so well with all the Texas ladies wearing designer clothing and shoes in a flood zone.

And, I’d like to add: Same with those who think insurance companies are paying out too much of their profits to their customers who file weather-related claims.

With the way this year’s gone, let alone just today, I dreaded when I saw “Thornton” trending on Twitter [it’s maybe 35 miles from me, prolly less, to the northwest]. Turns out that they found a Triceratops where they were digging for the town’s new public-safety building, though, so a small flash of light in a very dark day.

Whew. I argued with real live people instead of lizards for a change. Let me just warn anybody who might show up in person—do NOT tell me how to be safe on a bike or as a pedestrian. I lost one battle almost three years ago. The verbal battles I do not lose. I know certain subjects very well. And I am not impressed with the great bike you keep in the van you live in, especially when, at a later point in the ‘conversation’, as you called it, you tell me you haven’t driven in 12 years. You had to come clean about moving your van every day.

“My conservative friend is butthurt that people are making fun of Melania’s shoes. “I voted for Donald not Melania.”

I’m quite sure a competent WH Social Sec. could have advised her so that she could have made a choice that didn’t make her look like an entitled *ss in the presence of those less fortunate than her and the Talking Yam.

Well, she didn’t actually wear them in Corpus Christie. By the time they walked off Air Force 1 she had done a complete wardrobe change and was wearing sneakers.

FB video of a black guy behind a white guy and his wife/kid, at some fast food place. Black guy just wanting to buy some food. White guy, for no reason, pulls gun on him and searches him.

[Embedded content]

Seems like this happened in Brazil, and the fool with the weapon was an off-duty cop. He needs to lose his badge. It kinda breaks my heart that the guy still ordered his food. The idea that it’s so commonplace that he didn’t even bother to call for help is just disheartening as hell.
