An Awesome Live Performance by Phoebe Bridgers in a Hotel Room: “Smoke Signals”

Something happened when you were a kid

ADVISORY: This video contains explicit lyrics.

In a hotel room near midnight, Bridgers shares a lullaby for the lost. You can’t help but hang on for dear life.

By Lars Gotrich

Phoebe Bridgers was one of our top discoveries going into SXSW, a quiet and powerful voice in the loud din of the festival. After she performed at Central Presbyterian Church, a favorite venue among our staff, Bridgers and percussionist Marshall Vore came to Bob Boilen’s hotel room just before midnight to play the striking “Smoke Signals.”

Stripped of the strings on the studio version, there is still a sweeping quality to this acoustic performance, something like Low’s elegiac waltzes blurred into open chords, suitcase percussion, children’s toy bells and vocal harmony. You can’t help but hang on for dear life.

Credits:

Producers: Bob Boilen, Mito Habe-Evans; Director/Videographer: Nickolai Hammar; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Executive Producer: Anya Grundmann;

LYRICS:

I went with you up to
The place you grew up in
We spent a week in the cold
Just long enough to
“Walden” it with you
Any longer, it would have got old

Singing “Ace of Spades” when Lemmy died
But nothing’s changed
L.A.’s all right
Sleeping in my bed again
And getting in my head
And then walk around the reservoir

You, you must have been looking for me
Sending smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach

One of your eyes is always half-shut
Something happened when you were a kid
I didn’t know you then
And I’ll never understand
why it feels like I did

“How Soon Is Now” in an ’80s sedan
You slept inside of it because your dad
Lived in a campground in the back of a van
You said that song will creep you out until you’re dead

And you must have been looking for me
Sending smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach

I want to live at the Holiday Inn
Where somebody else makes the bed
We’ll watch TV while the lights on the street
Put all the stars to death
It’s been on my mind since Bowie died
Just checking out to hide from life

And all of our problems
I’m gonna solve ‘em
With you riding shot-gun
Speeding, ‘cause fuck the cops

And you, you must have been looking for me
Sending smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach

I buried a hatchet
It’s coming up lavender
The future’s unwritten
The past is a corridor
I’m at the exit looking back through the hall
You are anonymous
I am a concrete wall

Looking at the news today and like it does so often these days, my heart hurts. Trying to figure out what I can do to make a positive impact, even if it’s small.

At my race this morning, I knelt for the national anthem. Didn’t see anyone else doing so in my field of vision but didn’t look around much. I didn’t stand for it at the sportspuck game we went to later.

Related to yesterday’s OT:

There wasn’t any cholera in Puerto Rico prior to the Hurricane. Basically, the CDC is saying that they don’t anticipate any cholera cases because despite the conditions being ripe for spreading the disease, there isn’t any cholera to be spread.

Based on a couple of players (Robby Fabbri, Dennis Rasmussen), this will have to be from the last two seasons. Chicago and St. Louis did meet in the 2016 playoffs, and given the NBC watermark on there, my hunch is that it is from there.

I think we’ve all dispensed with the fiction that Ivanka and Jared somehow keep the yam’s worst tendencies in check.

Still, as I recuperate from my own Yom Kippur fast and get cringingly caught up on what I missed here while I was blessedly off line for a day, I am struck by how particularly batshit his tweets were today, when Jared and Ivanka were presumably in synagogue and hearing (if perhaps not absorbing) the dramatically different messages the holiday is supposed to convey.

Someone has told Trump that the underside of both of his shoes are covered with sh*t after his unhinged tweets earlier today were not well received. He’s now trying to remove it any way he can even if he has to use Fortuno to do it. He’s trying to do a “Clean Up on Aisle 1600” and failing miserably. His own d*mn mouth got him into this trouble, and at this point, no amount of disinfectant will remove the stench of failure and incompetence in regard to aiding hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico that surrounds him. He can keep lying, trying to distract, and changing the narrative, but I think most of the world sees a yuuuge “L” on his forehead.

I’m so tired of hereditary Republicans trying to pretend all is well. A college friend on FB posted something from one of those pages that pull their SUPER PATRIOTIC!!!! name out of the SUPERPATRIOTIC!!!! name generator.

Thing is, he’s not really SUPER PATRIOT!!!! material. He’s described himself as an Eisenhower Republican, but can’t bring himself to buck the party, even as it stands. And he tries to paint the Washington Post as the doppelganger of Fox News, because it’s ‘shril in its criticism of the Administration.

re: #145 Stanley Sea

Imagine if we had to drink from a creek.

(reading all PR stuff)

Putting on my public water system operator’s hat:

The most critical issue with a public water system is to prevent contaminants or organisms from entering the water system.

This is done by:

a) Treatment (in public water systems that require treatment)
b) Eliminating so-called “cross-connections.”

In my village, we regularly put out information to the village water customers what a cross-connection is and how to prevent inadvertently creating them.

A cross-connection is when the public water system is accidentally or purposefully connected to an unclean source of water. Normally, water pressure in a water system will prevent backflow (suction) from drawing the contaminated water into the system, but a drop of pressure (or unequal pressure) can cause that.

Even without a disaster people often don’t think of cross-connections (like leaving a garden hose in a bucket of water).

In a disaster such as that facing the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida, plumbing for both water systems and sewage systems were smashed. In addition, loss of electricity to run water pumps coupled with loss of pressure caused by water main breaks exponentially increases the chances of contaminated water being drawn into the water system.

Even in cities where water pressure is good and the electricity still works, water main breaks caused by the hurricanes can contaminate the system. The city can have full water towers, but if they are contaminated they are effectively useless.

Contamination of a water system is incredibly easy to accomplish (we still haven’t gotten a clean bill-of-health on our water system after it was worked on by an iron company) and difficult to correct.

With the massive infrastructure damage in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, getting the necessary chemicals and equipment to water systems away from the ports is already difficult; those stored there will be used up. Without a response beyond the capabilities of those territories, the remaining undamaged and clean water systems will begin failing.

How not standing during the anthem is somehow an affront to those who pledge to defend the Constitution of the United States, not a flag, is an insult to this veteran.

This one too. Damn straight.

It’s time to end this idea that symbols like the flag, and the anthem, represent this country. We definitely need to get over the notion that our troops will be affected by how many people are standing during the national anthem.

Absolutely. The country is represented by its people, all of them, not a flag or an anthem. The flag and anthem can symbolise the people, but they cannot stand in for us. We are the country, not the flag and anthem.

I’d just like to note that what came out of Drumpf’s i-Phone yesterday was, to be charitable, breathtakingly stupid.

From a political standpoint, it was all over the map. First he accused the people of PR as being lazy in not rebuilding their island, when they have no tools with which to work.

Then he went full gonzo on the mayor of San Juan, who was pleading for help because people in ICU units and Elder Care facilities were dead or actively dying.

The level of his tone deafness is remarkable. And unacceptable. And horrible. And frightening. And, ultimately, lethal.

You know what? Fuck him. Fuck him right up the ass.

The quicker he exits the stage, the better this country will be.

Dillahunty’s latest video tackles a particularly onerous topic:

Atheist Debates - Theological Noncognitivism and Ignosticism

I say onerous because trying to be too dismissive of religious words is itself a problem.

We humans may all tend to think in certain patterns typical of our species, but there is a great deal of variation.

That there are many, perhaps most, humans who harbor religious ideas of “god” means we have to take such concept seriously.

We can’t just pretend we can call it all gibberish and be done with it.

Instead, we need to reason through the ideas with people.

I’m reading Carrier’s Proving History, as he refers to it so much as a prolegomena to his major book on the historicity of Jesus that I figured I really had to read it before I get too much into that latter book.

Proving History is very much about writing the most rigorous history one can, thus the use of Bayes Theorem as the mechanism for reasoning in the decision in what to believe as what truly happened in the past.

So if we are to take history seriously, and know we have to respond to religious people seriously, then Theological Noncognitivism isn’t sufficient.

O.J. Simpson is officially out of prison.

O.J. Simpson walked out of prison early Sunday after serving nine years for a Las Vegas armed robbery and kidnapping.

The former NFL star left prison shortly after midnight local time, and was picked up by a friend, according to Brooke Keast , a spokeswoman for the Nevada Department of Corrections.

“I told him, ‘don’t ‘come back,’ and he responded, ‘I don’t intend to, ‘” she said. “He was upbeat, personable and seemed happy to get on with his life.”

Simpson, 70, was freed in the middle of the night to give him privacy.

That there are many, perhaps most, humans who harbor religious ideas of “god” means we have to take such concept seriously.

Acutally, we can be dismissive of any concept widely held without evidence, or arguments from popularity. The world is round, the universe is not “pinholes in the firmament,” there is no aether, spontaneous generation is bunk, &c. “God” is not off the table just because people assert “God.”

We can’t just pretend we can call it all gibberish and be done with it.

Sigh, the burden of proof is on the person making the claim (in this case there is one or more gods). A great number of religious believers of all faiths cannot even define what they mean by a god, much less agree on it.

Religious beliefs in gods are largely geography-based (unlike physics, or chemistry, or mathematics, which are the same everywhere).

A common argument for one of the thousands of variants of the Christian god is that he “exists outside space and time.” Yeah, until you can define what “exists outside space and time” even means (as well as how one knows what God’s gender is) then it’s gibberish.

Instead, we need to reason through the ideas with people.

I’m reading Carrier’s Proving History, as he refers to it so much as a prolegomena to his major book on the historicity of Jesus that I figured I really had to read it before I get too much into that latter book.

I’m pretty sure that somewhere out there in Greece, there’s some fella (or gal) who worships Zeus, Artemis, Apollo, etc. It doesn’t mean they exist, but old ways die hard and there’s always going to be those who are attracted to “the old ways”…….or find it irresistible to be an edgelord.

Non sequitur? It’s sort of a mirror version of the fallacy that x persecuted religious group still exists, so their god must exist.

Nope.

If there is some sort of god, who has an important message that he wants to impart to all people, particularly those who are in eternal peril of his own punishment he created a loophole to get out of, and is omnipotent… .

Then that god should be able to provide whatever evidence is required to convince said atheist.

Moreover, no one is born religious. Not a single person. All persons are inculcated with religious belief, usually at a very young age when they are easily manipulated.

Mr. Trump suddenly has a new opportunity for a win on health care. He should take full advantage.

Sigh, the burden of proof is on the person making the claim (in this case there is one or more gods).

I think you’ve missed the point Dillahunty was trying to make, and that I reworded.

The problem Dillahunty is confronting is those out there who want to play a sort of cognitive avoidance, not actually refuting religious beliefs through reason but by claiming that reason can’t apply because the very words in our dictionary such as “god” are, in art terms, Dada-ish.

Yes, I did misinterpret the original argument.

Mr. Dillahunty’s argument is against those who claim such a term as “God” is not clearly defined, and therefore is a useless term.

On his show, he will normally ask a person “what do you believe and why do you believe it,” particularly when a person says he or she believes in a god.

His point is not to claim the term “god” is useless, but to understand what the person means by the term.

That is different than the example I gave above (lives outside space and time). “Lives outside space and time” is a useless phrase, but does not necessarily indicate a god belief (for example, you could posit aliens living outside space and time and the phrase would be just as meaningless).

Oops, you’re right. There were two chances of a zonk originally. That’s why I’m not a mathematician. Do I get partial credit for having the correct method, though I plugged in the wrong number? /s

One of the things Monty Hall noted in an interview after he left “Let’s Make a Deal” and folks came up with the Monty Hall Problem was that the odds weren’t exactly as though they seem in the problem. For one thing, the producers of the show allowed him to use psychological pressure on the show to try to direct outcomes, as well as giving him wide latitude to change the rules as the game went along.

“Monday and Tuesday we can pivot hopefully to a theme of stabilizing as we address temporary housing and sustaining the flow of commodities and basic government services, including temporary power. After that we focus on restoration of basic services throughout next week and next weekend.”
Then we start a theme of recovery planning for the bright future that lies ahead for Puerto Rico. Planned hits, tweets, tv bookings and other work will limit the need for reactionary efforts.”

I think it’s a combination of both, actually. I hate to go all Godwin here, but if we look at the last days of the Third Reich, Hitler’s biggest problem - aside from, you know, being Hitler - was that the cringing lickspittles and toadies around him were scared shitless of telling him the reality of Germany’s military situation……a precarious reality, to put it mildly.

You really think his followers actually care about this? They are busy telling us we are getting fake news from MSM and we really need to read other sources. I have always been critical of MSM: they are often wrong and biased (think Judith Miller) and definitely misogynistic (their appalling treatment of Hillary); but they tend to be better than anything else out there. The best will admit mistakes, publish corrections, rethink their positions. Unfortunately the parallel RW publications make no such effort; they all would do Goebbels proud. And that’s were the Trumpsters get all their information. The only time they may (and that’s not a guarantee) change their mind is if something happens to someone they care about; occasionally then they may rethink their position.

I was surprised by Eric Erickson’s column today; it was very thoughtful and moving. Perhaps he is someone who could change his mind. nytimes.com

Well, this is interesting, from Juanita Jean:

Republican Jason Reese is running for a state house seat in Oklahoma, so I’m thinking maybe he wanted to fit in. He’s formerly a lawyer for the Oklahoma Republican Party.

His campaign expenditure report includes a purchase of a porn video. Yep, just your standard bondage video entitled “Hot Wife Chloe Needs To Be Punished.” And, Honey, Chloe ain’t the only one.

(Includes picture of the report. The candidate’s claim is that his CPA accidentally pasted that into the report, and there are apparently Republican voters who believe that.)

Went to a Nationals-Pirates game last night in D.C. I have a Roberto Clemente shirt but because I already have a Pirates hat, I gave the shirt to my Dad to wear and he spent the evening telling people about Clemente and how Clemente was a Puerto Rican, Puerto Ricans being American citizens, and how Clemente actually died in a plane crash enroute to Nicaragua to help people after an earthquake. That’s my Dad. I’m so proud and happy that he’s not fallen for wingnut bullshit. Not surprised but doesn’t make me any less proud.

Socialism and the promises of it had a lot of appeal until right wingers let people in states like that know “You know “those people” would be sharing those benefits” and all a sudden they became “rugged individualists” who didn’t need “big government.” SP-USA also did well in states like Montana and Idaho. Two states that between them have only gone for a Democratic candidate once in my lifetime. And I think this is what Sanders and other socialists don’t get. Race certainly plays a role when discussing economics.

There’s an article/op ed piece in the WSJ, saying basically “Why buy the cow if you an get the milk for free.” as the reason why marriage is declining. It puts the whole onus on women, for being slutty so that men don’t feel the need to marry.

The other reasons the author dismisses are men earning lower wages, but he finds a bullshit excuse to dismiss that.

Things he DOESN’T discuss?

- Women no longer rely on men for their identity and economic security.

- Many young people can’t move out on their own due to a combination of low wages and high housing prices - not just young men, but young women as well.

- Young women find satisfaction in their work, which is no longer merely something to do till they get married.

- As the number of unmarried people grows, more young people see that it isn’t such an awful, strange thing.

It seems to me that we’re in a big societal change that began a century ago. We’re redefining that marriage means, and why people do it. Already we are far past the need to ‘be fruitful and multiply’, and young people are probably sensitive to the fact of overpopulation. All these things are so much more interesting than the ‘women are too slutty’ argument.

One of the criticisms I’m seeing with my Facebook post, which I did copy to Daily Kos, is that Trump can’t lay traps. Of course he can. Traps don’t have to be complicated to be traps. We have creatures in nature that have entirely based on being a trap. Deranged people lay traps all the time. The big thing about Trump’s traps is that some people WANT to fall for them because he plays to their biases and anger.

If I may be so bold, MRAs would generally be abusers in a marriage in past years.

That was my first thought, in times past the MRA crowd were those who kept their wives on the leash called “financial support.” That it didn’t matter how badly they beat upon their wives, they knew they’d never leave because they had no marketable skills and no legitimate way to earn a living. Particularly if they had kids, then they could argue that a mother seeking divorce was unable to care for her children and so remand custody to hubby. Depending on where you lived in the country, an abused spouse could expect little to no help from her family, especially if they were on the cusp of retirement themselves and thus expecting to be cared for.

The MRA crowd are absolutely pissed that the days when they could tie down a woman by getting her pregnant are gone. What’s worse in their minds is the system is such now that they’re actually warned away from such behavior, because they won’t end up with a wife but instead with child support payments for a kid that they’ll have to spend money fighting to see.

“The federal estate tax is a tax on property (cash, real estate, stock, or other assets) transferred from deceased persons to their heirs. Only the wealthiest estates pay the tax because it is levied only on the portion of an estate’s value that exceeds a specified exemption level — $5.49 million per person (effectively $10.98 million per married couple) in 2017.”

cbpp.org

Gohmert is lying for Jesus again since the middle class isn’t impacted at all by the estate tax.

How long has this real estate tax boondoggle been going on now?

I worked with a guy back in the mid 90s that was always going on about the estate tax. His family didn’t even have all that much wealth and many of us always wondered how did this become such a talking point that would always turn to anger?

Was this the very early beginnings of Fox and Limbaugh talking points about the evil Democrats tax and spend? I can’t quite remember…just that this has been going on for along time.

Even without his tax returns, we know his family will benefit massively from abolishing the estate tax. And that exclusively benefits the ultra-rich.

We also know from the pages of the 2005 Trump tax return that the AMT cost him 31 million dollars. The AMT does affect people with a much more modest income than Trump’s and perhaps it should be adjusted; but without it, people like Trump will pay a lower rate than the baristas at Starbucks. The whole tax plan is designed to reduce taxes for the wealthy only, and ultimately reduce benefits for everyone else

He’s a carny, of course he can lay traps.

But all those Trump voters buh-leeved he was this great businessman we needed.

Trump and company would get eaten alive running a lemonade stand across the street from a group of 6-year olds.

Then again, I’d trust the 6-year olds with helping Puerto Rico too. They’d have more feel for the victims and understand the issues more so Than Orange Man Baby.

I used to work for a business owned by a couple: the wife refused, wherever and whenever possible, to fly anyplace, if any alternative transportation was available*. It provided me with a few interesting, if circuitous business trips in/around Europe: I thought it was just a quirk, until one time (on a train, of course) she told me that she had been in not one, but two crash-landings of commercial flights: and was really apprehensive about the “third-time’s-the-charm” implications. Seeing videos like this just reinforce my sympathies….

*Transatlantic or longer journeys were dealt with by liberal applications of booze and pills: must have worked, since she is still alive….

I view “race” as a completely cultural construct. So I try to not use old racial terms to describe myself.

Culturally, and legally, I’m an American. That’s pretty much all I can say about myself.

Being black or brown in America is a very different experience than being white in America. Maybe that’s just because of this cultural construct that we’ve created collectively but it’s not something you get to opt out of, any more than a black man can opt out of being stopped for no reason other than the color of his skin.

I can’t quite remember…just that this has been going on for along time.

the exclusion used to be much lower - 650k or so

insurance trusts and other strategies were good hedges

anyone who claims they had to sell the family “whatever” to pay the estate tax had their head in the sand for years prior. didnt plan, didnt care, didnt try.

in the reverse, lots of folks created insurance trusts when the exclusion was low - now with the 2008/9 “crash” their estates are under the exclusion limits, though they still have the trusts and still have to pay the premiums or lose the insurance.
