Trump’s Former Campaign Manager Paul Manafort Indicted

Politics • Views: 39,030

It was reported months ago that this indictment was imminent, and today it became a reality.

Paul Manafort is charged with laundering millions of dollars paid to him by pro-Russia Ukrainian politician Viktor Yanukovych, among others.

This is who Donald Trump hired to “Make America Great Again.” Trump’s relationship with Manafort goes back decades, and he’s now in a position to cut a deal with prosecutors.

So what’s on Trump’s alleged mind this morning?

It’s not just money laundering or tax fraud.

It’s conspiracy against the United States and FARA violations.

Conspiracy means more than one person involved. Manafort is the tip of a much larger group of people who will be swept into this.

The money laundering charge is big, but…

Conspiracy against the United States.

As Scottslemmons noted downstairs, you can’t have a one-person conspiracy. Round ‘em up.

This indictment is disastrous for Trump no matter how you try to spin it. And I’m sure that Trump and his allies are shaking in their boots wondering who else is going to indicted and how far up in the White House the perps will be.

Reminders to all re Trump’s fate:

1. It was tax evasion that got Capone not the myriad violent crimes he committed. And money laundering is a crime, isn’t it?
2. The investigation into Clinton ended up with an impeachment for an activity that had nothing to do with the original alleged crimes.

So even if the Mueller investigation started with Russian interference into our election, that doesn’t mean that will be the proximate cause of the Trump administration downfall. (May it be soon)

This isn’t a sure thing yet. It can go one of two ways. Either the rule of law prevails, or this is the end of the rule of law and we lose democracy. The SCOTUS is controlled by right wingers. The Congress too. Even the FBI and DOJ are within Trump’s control. Sure, they have so far resisted his commands to subvert justice, but all it takes is for him to fire Mueller and for Ryan and McConnell to shrug their shoulders at it. We’re not home free by a long shot.

Bloomberg - Former Trump Foreign Policy Adviser Pleaded Guilty in Mueller Probe

A former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, George Papadopoulos, secretly pleaded guilty as part of Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Papadopoulos had suggested that Donald Trump meet with top Russian leaders during the campaign. He pleaded guilty to making false statements during an interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Trump names his foreign policy team, March 21, 2016.

Those named by Trump include counterterrorism expert Walid Phares; Carter Page, a long-time energy industry consultant; George Papadopoulos (“an oil and energy consultant. Excellent guy”); Joe Schmitz, a former inspector general at the Defense Department and later an executive at Blackwater; retired Gen. Keith Kellogg, “and quite a few more,” Trump told the editorial board at the meeting in downtown Washington, where he was accompanied by campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and spokeswoman Hope Hicks.

A lot of people are going to get hit with that conspiracy charge, I’d bet.

nj.com checked out social media accounts belonging to Ernie Lunardelli and Anthony Lunardelli [the father/son refs]. Guess what they found!

On a Facebook post from Jan. 21 showing a picture of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Ernie Lunardelli wrote: “Yea! Thanks for f***ing up the country!! Back to the zoo!!”

On another Facebook post about the Obamas on Jan. 20 — President Donald Trump’s inauguration day — Lunardelli also posted: “Back to the zoo!!!”

Meanwhile, his son and the other official, Anthony Lunardelli, described Giants quarterback Eli Manning as having “jew luck” in a Facebook comment on Feb. 5, 2012.</strong>

I’ll remind FNC that President Clinton was impeached while the economy was doing well and the Tea Pot Dome Scandal happened in the Roaring 20’s. The economy’s doing great. Yes, I’m glad you finally acknowledge that because just last year you were happy to oblidge Trump’s lies about the economy and claim that DOL was lying about unemployment rates.

I’m happy to see the mood has changed here from where we were last week.

I have faith in the Rule of Law. Trump might think he’s above the law - they all did - but there’s a nasty life lesson coming his way and he cannot stop it.

I’ve been laying low because I really didn’t know what to say…it seemed anything positive was just pissing into the wind of all the gloom.

I still keep the Bird Sanctuary mess as an example of how things seem to go with some around here at LGF. A lot of members were all upset that the Feds and Obama were doing nothing and how this would lead to more takeovers by bubbas all over America.

And then one day there was a swift move and it was over.

Patience is a virtue. Think of slow cooked meat. Good stuff takes time.

This is worse than Watergate guys.

This scandal takes every major scandal the WH has ever had, from Teapot Dome on down to Watergate and corruption and combined them into a toxic stew that will leave its stain on everything the GOP does from here on out (or it should).

The GOP continued enabling this knowing all along how awful Trump is. They support and enable him anyways.

And this is how the arrest is being spun over on “the_donald” on Reddit….

…Yes…we obviously get that Manafort was (for a small period of time) Trump’s campaign manager, and so yes…we’re aware that the headlines reading “Trump Campaign Manager Indicted In Russia Probe” are technically correct (though laughably spinny & coordinated, particularly with the hivemind use of the word “surrender”).

But (aside from the fact that this indictment stems from old activity that has nothing to do with Trump), we also hope you get that Paul Manafort was never one of “our guys” in the first place. We said this at the time. We’re not just saying it today. He’s a lifetime member of the swamp. He has ties to Democrats as well as Republicans. You’ll notice he has connections to the Podestas. He has connections to just about everyone. That’s because he’s a swamp creature. He’s a political mercenary for the Establishment who has been around forever. If he’s the patsy who “takes the fall” in a silly nonsense investigation, I doubt you’ll find anyone here who sheds a tear.

He was a useful tool during a small period of time for the campaign. He was hired to do a relatively simple (but important) job in whipping up delegates at the convention. And then he was summarily fired.

Hopefully Manafort understands how there’s no loyalty to him and he spills the beans on everything he knows….

Kept it in a locked box

I have to admit, this makes me extremely impressed. Although it’s a handpicked group, we’re still talking about somewhere in the neighborhood of a couple dozen people on Mueller’s team, plus likely an order of magnitude more lawyers and FBI agents tangentially involved. That they can keep this locked up speaks a lot to the competency and professionalism of the team as well as Mueller’s ability to organize and lead it. Leaks seem to be coming either from other other areas of the Justice Department or from the targets of the investigation themselves.

On the flip side, it suggests that government conspiracies are at least theoretically possible, provided you can get Mueller to head up the team.

re: #55 Unabogie

This isn’t a sure thing yet. It can go one of two ways. Either the rule of law prevails, or this is the end of the rule of law and we lose democracy. The SCOTUS is controlled by right wingers. The Congress too. Even the FBI and DOJ are within Trump’s control. Sure, they have so far resisted his commands to subvert justice, but all it takes is for him to fire Mueller and for Ryan and McConnell to shrug their shoulders at it. We’re not home free by a long shot.

We still have the United States Constitution.

I think there are enough people that still respect the document and are more than willing to protect it.

Sure, many of them may not be politicians right now, but damnit, they still have to respond to the majority of the citizens.

Why? Because Papadoulous has already entered guilty plea on what role he played. They all had no problem colluding with Russia to get the emails. They weren’t even hiding it.

We were insanely lucky. Arnold provided crucial contributions as a patriot and was pretty much a miserable failure as a turncoat. Strangely enough, despite the fact we probably wouldn’t have a country without Arnold, there are far fewer monuments to him than to Lee. I wonder why that is.

I do love the narrative how Manafort really wasn’t that involved with Trump. Really? He’s known him for years. Trump hired him to be his campaign manager. I’d say that’s the equivalent. Oh my best man? He knows other people too but he’s really not that close to me.

Manafort also apparently got the Bannon treatment in that after he left the campaign, Trump would (allegedly) still call him to talk about the campaign and strategy. Remember, this is after he was forced to resign because a story broke that he’d been taking money from Russian oligarchs - and bullshit aside, had that story not come to light, Manafort would have probably been the campaign chairman until election day.

Hopefully Manafort understands how there’s no loyalty to him and he spills the beans on everything he knows….

I’m sure Manafort knows the Trumps are sleaze. He has been around politics long enough to know he is on his own now. Only saving he can do is himself and that will take some throwing others under the bus.

I think the next thing we start seeing is the separation of those loyal and those that want no further part of Trump Inc.

I expect we begin seeing more resignations and very few people signing up to work with the administration.

This may even throw a wrench into the budget and tax reconstruction hopes of Congress. Trump is wounded and the Party is split in at least three factions. No way they can all work together as there is too much slime to get caught up in.

So Jack was born in 1985, so he probably doesn’t know this since it didn’t happen in his life time and thus is from the age of pre-history, but… after this little historical event called World War II, the Soviet Union (as Russia was known then) invaded Ukraine and effectively operated it as a territory. The Soviets/Russians have always claimed a right to “the Ukraine” (adding “the” is a psychological ploy to establish the idea that Ukraine has never been independent).

Now, for the part that is very simple: the Ukrainian politician that Manafort did work for was a Russian loyalist. In fact, after he was removed from office, he ended up living in exile, in… wait for it… MOSCOW!

Ukraine has historically been part of a Russian empire longer than it has independent and as you say, the Russians and even many Ukrainians including Manafort’s former client consider it Russia. I actually have roots in the Slovak-Ukraine border area.

I avoid multiplayer as much as possible, but there’s one multiplayer VR game that I play because it’s really good.
I usually play solo or co-op with an old friend. Play co-op VR games causes me to get a lot more exercise than I would playing single player, because I wind up playing for a lot longer with less breaks.

Don’t see why he wouldn’t… he walked away from obligations through bankruptcy six times, and on one occasion had to give up his seat on the board of directors/executive authority. The only thing stopping him this time is that there’s no way to spin it as him winning.
