And Now, a Great Live Version of One of James McMurtry’s Classic Songs: “Levelland”

Music • Views: 39,831

YouTube

I honestly believe this to be one of the greatest songs ever written. So much said with so few words.

Flatter than a tabletop
Makes you wonder why they stopped here
Wagon must have lost a wheel
Or they lacked ambition one

On the great migration west
Separated from the rest
Though they might have tried their best
They never caught the sun

So they sunk some roots down in this dirt
To keep from blowin’ off the earth
They built a town around here
And when the dust had all but cleared

They called it Levelland
The pride of man
Levelland

Granddad grew dryland wheat
Stood on his own two feet
His mind went incomplete
And they put him in the home

Daddy’s cotton grows so high
Sucks the water table dry
His rolling sprinklers circle by
Bleedin’ it to the bone

And I won’t be here when it comes a day
It all dries up and blows away
I’d hang around just to see
But they never had much use for me

In Levelland
They don’t understand me
Out in Levelland

And I watch those jet trails carving up that big blue sky
Coast to coasters watch ‘em go
And I don’t blame ‘em one damn bit
If they never look down on this
Not much here they’d wanna know

Just Levelland
Far as you can point your hand
Nothin’ but Levelland

Mama used to roll her hair
Back before the central air
We’d sit outside and watch the stars at night
She’d tell me to make a wish
I’d wish we both could fly
I don’t think she’s seen the sky
Since we got the satellite dish

I can hear the marching band
Doin’ the best they can
To play “Smoke on the Water”,
“Joy to the World”

I’ve paid off all my debts
Got some change left over yet
And I’m gettin’ on a whisper jet
I’m gonna fly as far as I can get

From Levelland
Doin’ the best I can
Out in Levelland

What’s most amusing about this was that my first reaction wasn’t “spoof account,” it was “I can believe she said that…”

Was going to post it on the last thread, but this one suddenly came up.

I’m a leftist, I say “Merry Christmas” all the time - including three years when I worked at Target - and I sing in the choir here: St. George.

We had shots of cinnamon schnapps before liturgy started. At 9:30 in the morning.

I’m having flashbacks of a Christmas Eve about 40 years ago. Dear friends of my parents insisted we all go to their home for a traditional Swedish Christmas Eve. They were a very formal-type conservative (not in a political sense) couple and even my parents weren’t terribly excited about the idea but friends. It would be quite a change from our usual rowdy tradition of fried chicken, much booze (we’re Irish), gift opening, and poker. My older brother and I met at my parent’s house and we all had a drink and decided, hey, it’s just a couple of hours. It will be “nice.”

So we get to their home and we are escorted into their dining room where the table was filled with an exquisite spread of mostly unfamiliar dishes on the finest china. Clearly, days had been spent on the preparations. There were no chairs - they had been removed. They briefly explained the meaning of the tradition (that I cannot remember because you’ll see why) and gave us each a shot of Aquavit and a glass of beer. There was a traditional song after which we were to down the shot in one swallow chased by the beer. Then we would indulge in some of the food, followed by another round of song, shot, and beer. No idea what the song meant since it was in Swedish but by the third round we were all in on the chorus that sounded like “Hee-long-gor!” It got more enthusiastic as the evening progressed and our inhibitions were increasingly drowned.

I don’t remember much of the rest of the evening, not surprisingly. But the next morning I woke up at my apartment seeing a trail of clothes on the floor, my front door open, and my car only half-way in the parking place. Yet, it remains one of my more memorable Christmas Eves.

Well., gonna be a White Christmas in the Berkshires: it just started snowing about half an hour ago, and is supposed to keep on til morning. Good thing, though, that most of the black ice on the roads (but not our driveway, dammit!) is gone - til next time.

Since we don’t have a functioning fireplace, I did the next best thing: I accessed YouTube on the TV sets, and set the Yule Log loop “burning”: most of the color and action - without the smoke and soot.

So to - sort of - quote some old guy named Nick (who was Greek, btw, not Turkish) ” “Happy Holidays to all [Lizards], and to all a Good Night!”

Heh. Also gave me a flashback to a “Swedish Christmas Eve” about 40 years ago: I lived in L.A. - and was visiting a friend whose Swedish girlfriend had had her parents send her some traditional decorations from Sweden: not just the ornaments, but the traditional Swedish tree lights (illegal here): real candles in little holders that clipped onto the branches. Admittedly it was a quite a pretty sight when they were all lit: but I still recall watching all those live flames flickering among the (tinder-dry) evergreen branches with some trepidation. Especially as we were all pretty lit ourselves after a few rounds of akvavit.
God Jul, all!!

Just home from service, the Lessons & Carols. Medium-sized, middle-of-the-road Lutheran congregation, with a pastor who’s a Doctor Who fan, and confessed in tonight’s sermon that his favorite version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ is the Muppets. Music has always been a major focus of worship there. For Christmas Eve they go all out: the choir with about 30 members, the bell choir, and a mini-orchestra with about a dozen instruments including a tuba, cello, drum, guitar, violin, flute and trumpet. And a kid on cymbals who looked about eight and very enthusiastic. The rites of Christmas as expressed in candlelight and carols and a sense of community; two hundred voices filling the sanctuary with Silent Night in a capella harmony.

For those who believe in Him, a blessed Christmas.
For those who worship other ways or worship not at all, hopefully a day off and the relief of knowing the stores will go back to their usual Muzak on Tuesday, and the clerks can revert to the bland conventionality of ‘Have a nice day.’
For those who have to work anyway, hope you get overtime and respite soon, especially those facing fire in CA.
And for the Lizards, our web genius in chief, and this sane little corner of the intertubes, I am truly grateful. May we all get some nice little gifts from Santa Mueller to help make our spirits bright.

I should maybe explain that I live just across the freeway from major gang territory. Gun fire is ubiquitous here - I hear it most every night. Hookers hang out on the street by the Burger King at lunch time. Yeah, Burger King. It’s weird. That said, I feel safer here as a woman living alone than I did in my big suburban home in Katy, where we all ensconced ourselves in our walled in, gated homes. I could scream my lungs out there and no one would hear or respond. Here, I would have a community out the door at a whimper. On a night like tonight, stray, falling bullets are a reason to stay indoors.

Well, duh. I whipped up a quart of home made eggnog today. Easy Peasy. Yummy, too.

That reminds me that I just heard a story about the imminent disappearance of eggnog — manufacturers only make it around the holidays, so fans will have to do without. I guess food preparation really is mostly dead.

I am reading Earthseed: Parable of the Talents, published in 1998. This passage is about the president, a man from Texas, who wants to take America back to that unknown time when everyone worshiped the one Christian God:

Jarret condemns the burnings, but does so in such mild language that his people are free to hear what they want to hear. As for the beatings, the tarring and feathering, and the destruction of “heathen houses of devil-worship,” he has a simple answer: “Join us! Our doors are open to every nationality, every race! Leave your sinful past behind, and become one of us. Help us to make America great again.”

The E-mail comes directs you to go to a Website with a .us TDL to fix this.

Plunging in with a ton of paranoiaware activated on my computer, that Website actually redirects to a PayPal account in The Netherlands.

I wonder if this is legit? /s

The E-mail claims her Website (through which I get my E-mail) was taken off-line and encrypted for its safety (LOL).

Since I got my E-mail, I know the Website is not down. Went to the front page and it looks fine to me.

Woke up at midnight… definitely went to sleep too early, but being so dark and cold (for me) outside there is nothing like a warm blanket.

Christmas - just isn’t the same as when a child. Never raised in an overtly religious family, but there was usually a Christmas tree and a few presents.

It’s kind of weird, in a some ways, to feel that Christmas in Japan was more interesting than here. Over there it is just part of a commercialism express that leads up to the real holiday there - the New Year. Christmas being a week before 1 Jan means the typical 2-week New Year holiday starts on Christmas and extends a week after 1 Jan.

Here, New Year’s Eve is more seen as a time to get drunk, probably because people want to avoid truly reflecting on now old they are getting (and thus one calendar year closer to the grave.

Anyway, most Christmas music recordings played commonly are not that inspiring. Attempts to make some more serious (?) also fail, I think.

Nevertheless, here’s a tune which is probably the most-familiar of any Ukrainian-inspired Christmas for y’all:

Carol of the Bells

re: #95 freetoken

I’ve always liked Carol of the Bells.

We always had presents when I was growing up, but Christmas was not a religious day for my family. (My neighbours used to comment on why I don’t decorate my house when we first moved here, they’re used to it now.)

I do like live Christmas carols (though after I got the mumps a few years ago from the 4-H carolers that came by my house in 2012, not quite as much now). When I was child we used to go round our village singing secular carols with my cousins and mother so I thought it was neat when the 4-H girls came by our house after we moved here. (For some reason they don’t come by any more after they gave me the mumps.)

As we gyrate toward the Stygian darkness of Cthulhu’s embracing wings, we also must recognize that we will (yet again) be exposed to another year of misrule, idiocy, and disappointment. Something we aim to change in 2018 and permanently in 2020.

As members of Cthulhu’s election team we want to thank you for your sustained efforts to raise our god from the depths of the Pacific Ocean. It chills our hearts to see so many cultists desiring to cast their fellow humans into the void at this time of year!

Of course, if a hostile foreign power wants information to come out about us, take out Assange, trigger the drop, and then watch US get blamed for taking him out. If Assange has info about Russia, they can just take him out and then any fallout can be handled by…the usual methods…

That give you an idea about how the rich view us.

This steaming pile of manure was the centrepiece of William Jennings Bryant’s campaign in 1896. The GOP has been selling this idea for a long time. They keep renaming it, but the central theme remains the same (privatise profit, socialise loss).

The only reason they get away with it is because they can tie a moral panic to their platform (suffragette movement, Prohibition, Jim Crow, Civil Rights movement, War on Drugs, abortion, War on Christmas [tm], marriage equality, &c).

Voters look at the moral panic of the day and vote for the candidate who claims he or she will address that, ignoring the economic issue that comes without lube.

So-called values voters can be herded like cattle to vote for whatever moral panic is the order of the day.

The Nazis and Women: Kinder, Küche, Kirche

Nazi ideology was biased against women in several ways. The Nazis used a simplified and exaggerated mythology about German life, needed a growing population to fight the wars that would unite the Volk, and was inherently misogynistic. The result was that a Nazi ideology claiming women should be restricted to three things: Kinder, Küche, Kirche, or ‘children, kitchen, church.’ Women were encouraged from a young age to grow into mothers who bore children and then looked after them until they could go and conquer the east. Developments which aided women in determining their own fates, such as contraception, abortion, and laws about relationships, were all restricted to create more children, and fecund mothers could win medals for large families. However, overall German women did not start having any more children, and the pool of women who were invited to have children shrank: the Nazis only wanted Aryan mothers to have Aryan children, and racism, sterilization, and discriminatory laws tried to reduce non-Aryan children.

The leading German feminists before the Nazi split: some fled abroad and continued, some remained behind, stopped challenging the regime and lived safely.

[…]

Some of the Nazis in Germany were less concerned about marriages, and more about mating with the right examples of Aryan blood. In 1935 Himmler used the SS to set up Lebensborn, or ‘Fountain of Life, where women deemed suitably Aryan, but who couldn’t find a suitable husband, could be paired up with SS soldiers in special brothels for a quick pregnancy.

Remind you of anyone?

Since Trump is allowing me to say it this year…

Merry Christmas.

Happy Holidays.

Etc.

Went to a brothers house yesterday in northern Ohio to catch up on all the family dirt. Dang, my nieces and nephews are a crazy lot. Some are stable and doing well, and some are just doing stuff that isn’t helping them or anyone else.

Later in the day we got to hook up with a brother out in Tucson with a phone app so everyone could pass it around and chat and see each other. Got to meet a grand niece and nephew I’ve never met. Also got to see my poor ailing brother who is suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease. Amazing he was in a good smiling mood considering his health. He’s a strong guy, but damn what he is going through.

Then I left the area around 8:00 PM for the drive back to Columbus which ended up being in a good snow. It was just beginning to stick to the road…so I decided to take back roads home as I love driving in the snow and the big interstate (I-71) in that kind of weather can be tedious as so many are scared and drive slow while others haul ass. Not good. So, backroads add some time but I get to control the pace better. Only came up on one car I needed to pass and the rest of the time the roads were open.

Have a happy one Lizards. I think I am just going to do the lazy day thing.

Plus, it is pretty damn cold here in Columbus and windy. Brrrrr. Single digits overnight some this week. I don’t know if I am ready for that yet.

Oh yeah…please Santa…I hope you had some nice presents for the Mueller investigations. America needs ‘em.

I remember our local PBS station showing a documentary about Lebensborn with captured German footage - uncensored to boot.

Remember PL/C ? That compiler had the ability to always create a program that would always generate an executable - sure, it may not be what you wanted it to do, but it did create an execute. Pretty wicked for such a beast.

And WATBOL took away some of the most useful features from a true COBOL compiler (namely accessing relative and Indexed files) that made it totally useless.

Male hair loss is allegedly mostly influenced by DNA. And given we males only have one X chromosome, a chromosome on which some genes may reside that affect things like hair, that’s why we can blame our mother’s for these things (even though it became fashionable a few years back to write pop-articles trying to downplay this. True, most phenotypic traits you can name are due to many genes, not just a single one. Yet there is a very important gene on the X which is a big player in male-pattern baldness.) See: nbcnews.com

I still have most my hair, thin and gray though it has become. Kind of an ugly shade of gray too, not that silver-mane stuff that some guys get. Anecdotally, men who have the darkest hair when young seem to end up with the best looking hair when old. I started out blonde, turned brown-ish, now am a dull gray.

I’ve got the white hair (or silver, if you want to be la-di-dah about it) from my mom, whose hair went gray in her 30s. Mine started in my 40s. Unlike my dad, who kept his reddish-brown hair until he died at age 76. (Though I believe his graying sideburns kept getting shorter.) Both his hair and mine thinned as we got older, and my crown is now hairless. Not obvious from the front, but if I turn around on a sunny day, better grab those sunglasses!

He’s probably mining Ethereum or something besides Bitcoin. Bitcoin mining at home is a money-loser. Converting some to dollars is prudent, because the prices fluctuate so sharply. Briefly put, the Party is accumulating information about Chinese citizens’ finances, social media presence, spending habits, travel habits, etc., to develop a kind of rating system for loans, job placements, and such.

I’m sure “Ritz-Carlton”, i.e. its international management, had little to nothing to do with Prince Mohammed choosing their property as his preferred detention center/torture chamber - still less for the sort of “guest services” recently introduced. He (or some Saudi royal) is probably their local partner.

Still embarrassing, though: even more so that the press still uncritically repeats the canard that this is all part of some “anti-corruption” drive.
Although I’m sure that the end aim is that Prince MBS gets a monopoly on the corruption for himself…..

Greets and saluts from the snowy NYC metro area this Christmas morning.

It’s a fine way to wake up and view the world. Pristine. Beautiful.

All the things that the state of the political environment is not.

Such a shame.

This nation has so much beauty, beautiful people and views worth sharing and yet there are so many who have bought into the hate and deceit that the GOP have spewed for years that they think that depriving the poor of basic safety net and services is a good thing because they don’t deserve it. These GOPers think that cutting government and giving tax cuts for the rich is the way to add to the debt and enrich society.

It is the exact opposite of reality, but the GOP don’t actually believe in facts or reality.

Trump is the nadir of this worldview, and other GOPers are now building on this view.

This coming year is the midterm elections. It’s when all of the House is up for reelection and it’s an opportunity to return at least part of the federal government to sanity - or at least block far worse actions from being imposed on a nation that is unwilling to participate in the madness of Trumpworld.

The House may flip this coming year, thanks to the GOP and Trump’s hateful agenda and near supermajority opposition. The Senate is a tougher nut due to the fact that there are more Democrats up for reelection than GOPers (1/3 of Senate up every 2 years).

How to make sure the House flips and the Democrats have a chance at retaining the seats they have in the Senate?

VOTE.

Vote as if your life depends on it.

Because it does.

That’s a message of hope, not despair. Because when people get out and vote, good things do happen. It’s apathy and ignorance that allows hateful agendas to take hold and thrive.

I detest Palin and I may have read her entire message too quickly but, given that the quote was from Isaiah, her statement did not seem offensive but actually in keeping with the time of year.

Thanks. It’s always hard when they pass. Gosh the cat names I could list from decades of enjoying the feline kind. We rescued her from the ceiling (yes literally ceiling cat) in the California Jewelry Mart building all those years ago. Strictly an indoor kitty. From No More Mister Nice Blog, an article on wealthy people grousing about the tax bill. Turns out wealthy people in blue states don’t like it very much.

nomoremister.blogspot.com

Wall Street traders who rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars a year or more eagerly awaited a Republican overhaul of the U.S. tax code. Now, many are huddling with accountants and concluding the real gains will go to billionaires and other captains of the industry. Those in trenches — the merely wealthy — are grousing.

Atop their list of worries: New limits on deductions for mortgage interest and state and local taxes — relatively high throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut — will cost them thousands of dollars annually while depressing the value of their homes. That would chop local tax revenues and erode the quality of schools and other amenities traders expect for their families.

We had our annual Christmas Eve dinner last night and then tacked on the immediate family’s gift exchange (because it was what worked schedule-wise for everyone.) It made it a long night, but everyone had fun and many fine donations to good causes were exchanged, along with a few token gifts. For some reason it isn’t Christmas without socks… ;)

Today will be quiet. I’ll get the odds and ends tidied up from last night’s revels-the table linens in the wash, the decorations off the table, and the leaves removed to get it back to its smaller size. Then a relaxing day-a book, some quality time with my loom, a walk with Mr. C. But we’re both feeling our age a bit. Gone are the days when we could stay up until 1:00 a.m. and feel decent the next morning. (Actually, I’m not sure I ever could. Morning person here!)

I hope everyone here has a lovely day, whether they celebrate Christmas or not.

From No More Mister Nice Blog, an article on wealthy people grousing about the tax bill. Turns out wealthy people in blue states don’t like it very much.

Wasn’t Trump always resentful that the elite of New York society never really accepted him? So this is real payback. OTOH, I don’t know how much influence Trump had on this particular bill as opposed to Ryan and McConnell, but I have to suspect, given the treatment of real estate pass-through it may have been quite deliberate. And the Republicans hate blue states anyway and want to punish them. A few days ago someone posted on this site an Eichenwald article(?) twitter (?) that showed someone earning 20 million per year would be getting a 200,000 tax increase in a blue state and a 400,000 tax decrease in a red state. My income taxes are definitely increasing and my state Illinois has modest income taxes.

My fervent hope is that every blue state Republican loses in 2018 and that it’s a bloodbath nationwide.

Facebook comment of the day Maybe the month.

Donald Trump is a piece of shit, and if you still support him you are at least one of: evil, dumb, and/or incredibly misguided, and that’s all there is to it. I’m tired of trying to dance around that simple fact in polite discourse.

He’s a racist - obviously.
He’s a sexist - obviously.
He’s a xenophobe - obviously.
He’s intellectually stunted - obviously.
He’s a serial, compulsive liar - obviously.
He’s an unethical man, who has defrauded thousands and thousands of investors and “students” at Trump “University” - obviously.
He’s made us less safe, and more isolated, and diminished our status across the globe - obviously.
All of these things, and many more, are just plain obvious, and undeniable, unless you’re lying, stupid, or horribly confused - obviously.

He’s easily the most corrupt and least capable MF to ever sit in that chair, and like the overwhelming majority of Americans, and literally every ally we have in this world, I cannot wait until he is no longer in office and fucking up every single aspect of our American life. So, in conclusion, if you think the FBI is “corrupt” or “biased” because its investigations tend to suggest that Twitler might be less than forthright or ethical, and that he just might be a criminal, you’re maybe an idiot.

Kinda late for that, I think: the “Christmas Season” seems to start just after Halloween nowadays, and post-holiday sales-pitching goes on well into January. I think the “war” may be lost, but we can still wage guerrilla actions if need be….

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

what a bunch of suckers

A Canadian government website says Santa is moving to the South Pole. The website for Policy Horizons Canada blames it on climate change. The site says rapidly melting Arctic ice and growing human operations in the North have forced Santa to sign an agreement with the international community to move his village to the South Pole next year.

According to the conservative news and opinion website The Daily Caller, the Policy Horizons announcement on Santa’s move is one of a series of Christmas-themed blog posts tied to emerging liberal policy concerns.

I forgot to mention. I got a great Christmas gift yesterday. I finally got direct contact with my Puerto Rican friend who lives on Vieques!

I had written here before I had worried about her since the nasty hurricanes hit the area.

She said she didn’t have internet or phone for 2 1/2 months and she had to ferry to San Juan to communicate with her son who is now here in Columbus.

She didn’t have water for 6 weeks and any electricity for almost 3 months. They have some limited power now from a giant generator that FEMA set up giving lights to the main town where she lives.

The hotel she worked at closed and she had no work for a few weeks. She was hired by the humane society, where she volunteered prior, just to clean the pens, etc. And then she got the bookkeeping job when the former quit due to conditions.

That’s great for her because she loves her dogs…many dogs. I never know the current count because she always has more due to her helping out strays.

She spent Christmas eve in San Juan taking a dog to the airport who had been at the shelter since September, his owner is waiting in San Francisco.

So she sounds like she is handling it well, as I knew she was capable due to her strength and determination. Said it before…what do you expect from a dog-loving, Puerto Rican Dead Head artist?

I love the little elves. That really makes the image. Especially the little boy at the end looking off to his right like, “hey, what you doing over there…we’re taking pictures here!”
