The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

April 24, 2020 | Bob Boilen — When John Fogerty breaks out his baseball bat guitar and swings into that famous guitar lick from “Centerfield” to open his Tiny Desk (home) concert, I can almost taste the Cracker Jacks. Welcome to Fogerty’s Factory, the tricked-out basement where the Fogerty Family (John, his sons Tyler and Shane, and his daughter Kelsy) make music in these quarantined times. His desk is the road case his band Creedence Clearwater Revival used when they played Woodstock, and John shows off a guitar he played at the festival as well. He plays three of his CCR classics from 50 years ago (still singing in the same key), surrounded by family and sending out words of encouragement to all of us.

SET LIST

“Centerfield”
“Down On The Corner”
“Long As I Can See The Light”
“Proud Mary”

2020: The Moron Self-Induced Rapture

Hoping to see y’all on the flip-side. There won’t be a lot of us around that know what “the flip side” used to mean but oh well.

Don’t be stupid. Avoid people with good haircuts, manicures and good bowling averages.

Gotta love the preppers who have enough supplies to survive for a year underground but are demanding to end the quarantine so they can get a haircut to impress a person they will never meet.

Yes, they really do that. It’s your teeth they want to lick. Good thing there isn’t a vulpine covid-19 epidemic.

re: #3 Dread Pirate

The charts I’m seeing show huge increases in testing yesterday and today, from the 150k plateau we’d been on for almost 2 weeks to 300k+. I’d say something new just came online but I haven’t seen any details about what.

That the new cases haven’t doubled to match is kind of a conflict with the antibody test results we’re seeing. Something is broken, and my bet would be false-positives on the antibody side.

There was some talk that the US would need capacity near 5 million a day to properly implement post-opening contact/trace/quarantine. I think that is likely to be way overkill, perhaps by a factor of 3 or 4, but then I think responsible reopen can only happen when case rates are 80%-90% lower than current.

I live in Fort Worth, Texas and our Tarrant County numbers today were a new high of 147 new cases. Dallas County had 80 something. Granted those numbers reflect a 2 week or so lag for symptoms to develop, testing etc. but still. Dallas has been a leader with Ft. Worth being an “independent & conservative” follower and it is showing in a bad way.

Update from Chester VA, ~15mi South of Richmond. Severe local storm shortly before 5pm EST dropped marble-size hail and took out 5 trees at property next door. Two large trees near street were snapped near base and blocked the street. An even larger tree was uprooted and damaged the house next door. Two smaller trees were splintered and twisted at their base. No damage to my house, trees, etc, altho my trashcan blew over. I suspect it was a tornado —literally a few feet away.

A physician friend in Lubbock alerted me to this earlier today. He said that Covid 19 cases there seem to be very heavily concentrated in upper middle-class and middle-class neighborhoods. I found the map and it confirms this almost exactly.

The blue zip codes correspond almost exactly with the wealthiest (and whitest) parts of the city. The minority and poor areas are nearly Covid-free. This is different from what we have seen in other parts of the country. My guess is that it is related to the very heavy Republican presence in these areas. The city as a whole went 70-30 for Trump, with the vote in the wealthier precincts being as high as 92-8. Is it possible that the more devoted they are to Trump, the less seriously they take the risk? I have also heard that traffic is close to normal in wealthy areas, despite the lack of shopping venues, restaurants and the all-important bars. Poorer areas, in contrast, are almost deserted.

The people who were world travelers were the ones who infected the rest. I read a story of 50 Mexico City rich dicks infecting the whole city after a visit to Aspen. The rich people employ poorer folks….this is how the trickle down theory really works…

There’s also the fact that the initial vectors for covid19 were people well enough off to travel by air, go on cruises etc.

Breed says SF’s PPE orders have been diverted to France and ‘confiscated’ by FEMA

San Francisco Mayor London Breed explained the city’s difficulties in acquiring personal protective equipment for local hospitals in a press conference Friday, saying city officials’ orders for gowns and other safety items have been diverted to other countries and U.S. cities.

San Francisco has successfully purchased 15 million pieces of PPE, and received others from the federal government or from companies like Flexport and Facebook, but it’s not enough.

“We’ve had issues of our orders being relocated by our suppliers in China,” she said. “For example, we had isolation gowns on their way to San Francisco and they were diverted to France. We’ve had situations when things we’ve ordered that have gone through Customs were confiscated by FEMA to be diverted to other locations. We know everyone is dealing with a serious challenge. Through Customs, we’ve had situations where those items have been taken and put out on the market for the highest bidder, putting cities against cities and states against states.”

Breed’s statement Friday echoed similar observations made by U.S. political leaders in recent weeks. She added that the fact she and other local and state governments are having to fight to secure PPE at this point of the coronavirus outbreak “blows my mind,” but she nevertheless wanted residents to better understand why the process of buying such supplies has not been straightforward.

Once again…this is mob extortion shit right here.
