If he’s really falling under 40%, that’s GWB circa 2006 territory. It’s about where GHWB was at this point in 1992. He’s not quite to where Carter was (low 30s/high 20s), but he seems to be trending that way

It was mentioned on the last thread that the U.S. reported a record high number of cases today. It’s actually not the all time record, but it’s close. We reported 34 700 cases today. The overall record from April is 36 400 and I suspect that one will get broken in a few days a time.

And next weekend is July 4th.

Man are we in for a fucking shitstorm.

I was at Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market a few minutes ago. There were I’d say 50 or so customers in the store. I noticed only five wearing masks: two black people, an asian woman, an elderly man…and myself. I also stopped at a Dollar General a couple of days ago and was only one of two of around 15 customers in there wearing a mask.

I think here’s the distinction:

California, Texas and Florida all set records for the number of new cases in one day. Nationally, 34,720 new cases were reported Tuesday in the US — the third-highest number of new cases reported in one day since the beginning of the pandemic, based on a data archive kept by Johns Hopkins University. The two days with more cases were both in April

The question is just how much death and destruction the typical Republican voter will tolerate. I’m afraid with these skyrocketing covid numbers we are going to find out.

I’m resigned to the fact that he’s going to get at least 40% (probably +/-2) because that seems to be the floor for a major party nominee in the modern era, particularly in a two person race. The question is how close he comes to that and if he really ends up under it.

Reagan in 84 and Nixon in 72 were high water marks (58.8% and 60%, respectively) but those were incumbents seeking re-election. A challenger hasn’t got that high since FDR.

But with no “credible” third party candidates/nominees, Biden might just get there. Hell, even if it is 55-43, I’d be happy.

Major retailers and other businesses need to be made aware of this shit so they can shut this crap down. My husband and son both have what are considered serious disabilities. And they both wear fucking masks whenever they go out. Because it’s seriously the least we can do and it’s not a damned inconvenience. This also shouldn’t be legal, they are faking a disability to skirt public health rules. If I was a business owner I’d call the number on their dumb card and report them.

48
NetworkKed  Jun 24, 2020 • 5:04:50pm

So if we’re talking about betting on C19 fatalities before the election, there are two big problems that come to mind:

1. The red states are faking the numbers. There are reasons to think FL and TX in particular are full of it and there was a thread (I think at the GOS) which did analysis showing Trump states reporting something like 25% fewer deaths per confirmed case than Clinton states. I don’t think it’s a conclusive case, but as it starts getting bad in the red states watch to see what happens. I won’t insist that they have to match the proportions that NY or any of the EU countries had, but this nonsense where deaths are <1% of new cases is not going to stand, unless new cases are absolutely rocketing.

2. While it’s a misnomer to call what we’re in right now a true second wave, it certainly is a second national upward trend. Given where it’s starting, it’s not so crazy to think it could peak at 300k cases/day if it goes as exponential as the first one did. It probably won’t - states know how to lock down, and you figure even the derpiest governors will eventually cave in… but pushing it back down is going to take a long time. Again.

But there’s time - far more than enough time - for the numbers to push down… and then we hit a third national upward trend before the election.

I refuse to make a prediction or a bet, because there’s SO MUCH VARIANCE out there. I think anything is possible, from maxing around 150k because we’re getting better and better at treating this stuff (and pretending people don’t die of it), to 10M if it’s totally out of control. Both of those are equally unlikely, but the terrain in between is unknowable.

I think major retailers know it’s bullshit. They don’t have to let a person who can’t wear a mask in-they need to “accommodate” them. Deliver their order curbside or whatever. It’s probably more likely to intimidate a small business that doesn’t have a legal dept. to tell them it’s stupid.

Talk about a well-run state!

South Carolina’s top epidemiologist said Wednesday that requirements statewide to wear masks would be more effective in slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

Bell’s comments came shortly after the Department of Health and Environmental Control reported nearly 1,300 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, and one day after Gov. Henry McMaster said again that he would not mandate people wear masks while in public.

I had a procedure done today, and the nurse that handled me moaned about wearing a mask all day, five days a week, and said she won’t wear one outside of work because it was just too much and she couldn’t stand it. Said the workers at WalMart weren’t wearing masks, and I said whenever I was in there, all of them were. She said well, at Home Depot they weren’t. I haven’t been there, so couldn’t dispute that. Just what I want, a nurse that isn’t taking precautions. Wonder what percentage of them are like that? Pretty high, I betcha.

There are people who legitmately cannot wear masks, or who have problems wearing masks (some disabled children fall into this category). To keep them safe, the rest of us must be masked. There are people who legitmately cannot wear masks, or who have problems wearing masks (some disabled children fall into this category). To keep them safe, the rest of us must be masked. Just like with vaccines; we cover for those who can’t. All we need is 80%, 4 out 5 five masked. 80 fucking percent. Morons.

I’ve also never understood the desire to utilize fake handicaps. I had a handicapped placard before my knee replacement 10 years ago, and I’m still delighted to have turned it in, and be able to park at the far, far end of the parking lot and walk however long it takes to get to the store.

SLO County Public Health Department warns of fake face covering exemption cards

The SLO County Public Health Department is warning residents that various cards claiming to exempt the holder from California’s face covering ordinance are fraudulent and not endorsed by the U.S. Department of Justice.

In a “rumor alert” posted to the department’s Facebook page on June 22, county staff linked to a recent press release posted by the U.S. Department of Justice, which says that various printouts of face covering exemption cards, many of which include the U.S. Department of Justice seal, are floating around the internet.

“These postings were not issued by the department and are not endorsed by the department,” the press release reads. “The department urges the public not to rely on the information contained in these postings and to visit ada.gov for ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] information issued by the Department.”

re: #18 Eclectic Cyborg

I was at Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market a few minutes ago. There were I’d say 50 or so customers in the store. I noticed only five wearing masks: two black people, an asian woman, an elderly man…and myself. I also stopped at a Dollar General a couple of days ago and was only one of two of around 15 customers in there wearing a mask.

clemson city council passed an ordinance that everybody in situations where they will meet other people must wear masks. first offense is 25 bucks, second is 100. this is south carolina, so that’s real money for many people.

Worldometer, my favorite coronavirus site, shows different numbers, though today’s is still the highest for the pandemic: 39,103 vs the 38,672 here. The previous worldometer highest was 39,072 on April 24th instead of 36,001 on April 25th. Maybe they collect data using different 24 hour periods?

In response to flood of new COVID cases, Lubbock Mayor exclaims “Wear your damn mask!”

LUBBOCK, Texas - Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope addressed the recent meteoric rise in local COVID-19 cases. Lubbock had more cases in two weeks than for the previous three months combined. Pope did so during an online press conference by the City of Lubbock Wednesday morning.

When asked why he and the Lubbock City Council do not mandate masks in public, he said it’s not enforceable because of decisions by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Local governments can announce a mandate, but according to the mayor, it simply cannot be enforced.

“We need people to take personal responsibility,” Pope said. “I think that message is simple as it can be.”

“Wear your damn mask!”

I will contribute the maximum to anyone (possibly everyone) who runs against Abbott in 2022, assuming that he and other plague-rats haven’t killed me off by then.
