Rep. John Lewis’s funeral will be held July 30 at Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once led. Former president Barack Obama will deliver a eulogy, along with remembrances from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Anchor Libby Casey will be joined by Post reporters Nicole Ellis, Eugene Scott, Rhonda Colvin and Paul Kane. Spencer Crew, the director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, will also discuss Lewis’s legacy.

Lewis’s family has asked members of the public not to travel from across the country to pay their respects. The civil rights leader died on July 17 at the age of 80, several months after he was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. Lewis spent his lifetime preaching nonviolence while enduring beatings and jailings during seminal front-line confrontations of the 1960s. He spent more than three decades in Congress defending the crucial gains he had helped achieve for people of color. Read more: https://wapo.st/2Cn5Jgs. The U.S. Senate on Thursday abruptly canceled a hearing for President Donald Trump’s most divisive nominee to date for a senior Pentagon post, raising questions about whether the controversial retired general had enough support from lawmakers.

Anthony Tata, a retired Army brigadier general who has been an ardent defender of Trump in appearances on Fox News, would hold the most senior policy position in the Pentagon if confirmed.

Tata has falsely portrayed former President Barack Obama as a Muslim and accused him of being a “terrorist leader” working to benefit Iran, according to now-deleted Twitter posts seen by Reuters.

Just before Tata’s confirmation hearing was set to start on Thursday, the Senate Armed Services Committee’s website said it had been canceled without giving a reason.

Some of Joe Biden’s allies and top supporters are campaigning against Sen. Kamala Harris as a potential vice presidential pick because, get this: She’s too ambitious, and … they just find her somehow, mysteriously, sort of … well: “I don’t like her, and I don’t like the way she campaigned. She seems not loyal at all and very opportunistic,” someone identified only as a Chicago-based businessman told CNBC.

Gentlemen. When Kamala Harris was campaigning against the former vice president now running for president because ambition, her job was not to be loyal to Joe Biden. And no one in the history of ever has become a vice presidential nominee without having been ambitious. Yet somehow it’s women for whom this is a disqualifying charge. Go f’ing figure.

Obama now calling out GHWB and GWB for getting the VRA to done and renewed. Clinton didn’t have to - he enacted law making it easier to vote. But once the SCT weakened the VRA, Trumpist unleashed a series of laws to make it harder to vote, especially where there’s minority turnout. It’s not a mystery or an accident.

It was an attack on our democratic freedoms and we should treat it as such. If politicians want to honor John, and we’re so grateful for his legacy, but there’s a better way than calling him a hero. Want to honor John, revitalize the law he was willing to die for.

— Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States.

Top Republicans offered a rare rebuke of President Trump, condemning his suggestion that the Nov. 3 general election be delayed — something he has no authority to order, the New York Times reports.

Said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA): “Never in the history of the federal elections have we not held an election and we should go forward.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, initially declined to comment, but later dismissed Trump’s suggestion in an interview with WNKY: “Never in the history of the country, through wars, depressions, and the Civil War have we ever not had a federally scheduled election on time, and we’ll find a way to do that again this Nov. 3. We’ll cope with whatever the situation is and have the election on Nov. 3 as already scheduled.”

I’m just curious if anyone else developed symptoms. It’s been long enough that the people who were at the rally that got sick either got over it.

Governor Stitt of Oklahoma tested positive following the rally. From July 16:

Governor Stitt tested positive for COVID-19. He announced the diagnosis in a news conference on Wednesday.

Stitt said the illnesses started as feeling achy, but reported no other symptoms. He is working from home and will remain in quarantine until Interim Commissioner of Health Lance Frye says it is okay to return.

Hackers post fake stories on real news sites ‘to discredit Nato’ (BBC)

Hackers have broken into real news websites and posted fake stories stirring up anti-Nato sentiment, a cyber-security firm has warned.

The disinformation campaign, nicknamed “ghostwriter”, has been ongoing since 2017, according to FireEye researchers.

It is designed to “chip away” at support for Nato in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland, they said.

While the false stories are “aligned with Russian security interests”, it is not known who is behind the attack.

The disinformation campaign uses “falsified news articles, quotes, correspondence and other documents designed to appear as coming from military officials and political figures in the target countries,” FireEye said.

In some cases, false news stories were posted on real news websites without permission.

Hmm…..”Little Green Men 2: Belarus Boogaloo”?

Escalating a simmering feud with Russia, its neighbor and longtime ally, Belarus on Wednesday charged that more than 200 mercenaries from Russia, disguised as tourists, had infiltrated Belarus on a mission to disrupt its presidential election.

Reports of a Russian mercenary force in Belarus, which could not be independently confirmed, followed months of increasingly ill-tempered exchanges between Minsk and Moscow, close but fractious allies that used to be bound together by their shared wariness of the West, but are now intensely wary of each other.

Belta, Belarus’s official news agency, published the names and birth dates of 32 detained Russian fighters whom it described as employees of Wagner Group, a mercenary recruiting company linked to Yevgeny Prigozhin, a longtime associate of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

The Russian embassy in Minsk said it had asked the Belarusian authorities about the reports of a mercenary force but had received no official information about any Russians being detained.

I’d say it’d be more a “crimes against humanity” trial.

Unlike war crimes, crimes against humanity can be committed during peace or war. They are not isolated or sporadic events, but are part either of a government policy (although the perpetrators need not identify themselves with this policy) or of a wide practice of atrocities tolerated or condoned by a government or a de facto authority. War crimes, murder, massacres, dehumanization, genocide, ethnic cleansing, deportations, unethical human experimentation, extrajudicial punishments including summary executions, use of weapons of mass destruction, state terrorism or state sponsoring of terrorism, death squads, kidnappings and forced disappearances, use of child soldiers, unjust imprisonment, enslavement, torture, rape, political repression, racial discrimination, religious persecution and other human rights abuses may reach the threshold of crimes against humanity if they are part of a widespread or systematic practice.

the only difference between ‘absentee’ and mail-in voting is the idea that in one case you need an excuse or pre approval

otherwise they are identical
- receiving a printed ballot
- filling it out
- mailing it

you can ‘absentee’ vote from with your district, or state. you dont have to be out of state to qualify for an absentee ballot.

further as if the usps knows or cares where a particular envelope was mailed from, or is going or who it’s from or to and that somehow it would then be handled differently from all the other mail

“Because then the State & local authorities have to investigate ballots that were sent *outside* their jurisdictions” if this is trump’s quote, it’s just wrong.

just like with the usps, those who receive and validate the ballots have no idea where the person was sitting when they filled out the ballot, or where it was dropped in the mail.

this is all nonsense

why are we forced to keep making non issues into ‘legitimate’ issues for discussion?
this is ‘masks’ all over again.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress has awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, its highest honor, to surviving crew members of the USS Indianapolis, the ship that delivered key components of the first nuclear bomb and was later sunk by Japan during World War II.

The ship, with 1,195 personnel aboard, delivered enriched uranium and other parts of the atomic bomb ”Little Boy” that was later dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945.

Four days after delivering its top secret cargo, the ship was sunk by Japanese torpedoes on July 30, 1945. Of nearly 900 men who went into the Philippine Sea, just 316 survived before being rescued nearly five days later. The death toll of 879 was the largest single disaster at sea in U.S. Navy history.

No escape for war criminals, as another Nazi has been charged in Germany.

Former Nazi camp guard, 95, charged in Germany (The Local)

The former guard at the Stutthof Nazi camp near what was then Danzig, now Gdansk in Poland, was charged with complicity in the murder of several hundred people, a spokesman for the district court in Wuppertal told AFP.

The ability of the accused to stand trial must now be assessed by experts.

Because he was 19 years old when assigned to work as a guard at the Stutthof camp, the case would be handled by a juvenile court.

The man would be the latest former Nazi camp guard to face trial since a landmark 2011 ruling against John Demjanjuk, a former guard at the Sobibor death camp.

This comes on the heels of the conviction six days ago of Bruno Dey.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress has awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, its highest honor, to surviving crew members of the USS Indianapolis, the ship that delivered key components of the first nuclear bomb and was later sunk by Japan during World War II.
The ship, with 1,195 personnel aboard, delivered enriched uranium and other parts of the atomic bomb “Little Boy” that was later dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945.

Navy history.

i posted this way back on 5/15.

On November 3, 2020, the Presidential Election *Will* Take Place
There is no delay, there is no postpone, there is no cancel.

- there is no way to postpone the election that benefits trump or republicans

- there are about 5 ways he might try to stay in office past 1/20/21.
only two could work:
win the election.
stage a successful coup (no. not gonna happen).

any other currently circulating scare scenario is based on
- factual inaccuracies (i dont care - trump’s not a magician or that powerful)
- the R’s doing all kinds of shit and the D’s just sitting and watching without taking any action on their own
- that he could actually govern in any sense after delegitimizing the process and the office

the only thing that’s changed since May or before is that he’s actually tweeted it

Elections may be called by the press on election night, but the election results aren’t official until they’re certified by the states, and that occurs weeks later. The numbers are then sent on and tabulated.

That’s how all elections work. Some close elections take time for the results to become known. Some have been disputed all the way to the Supreme Court. Had we gone with a strict direct voting instead of EC, we’d know who won the WH pretty early on too.

At this point, the media should stop trying to horse race this fucking lunatic and switch to seeing by how big a margin can Biden run up against the worst admin in the nation’s history. No other admin has done as much damage to the nation as Trump since before the Civil War.

The revelation Wednesday that Texas Republican Louie Gohmert, a renegade lawmaker known for stalking the halls of Congress without a mask, tested positive for Covid-19 has unleashed a fusillade of anger on Capitol Hill — a sudden release of built-up tension over how the institution has dealt with the coronavirus pandemic within the confines of its own workplace,” Politico reports.

“Now, legislative aides, chiefs of staff, press assistants, members of Congress, career workers and maintenance men and women are venting their fury with an institution that does not have uniform rules or masking requirements, does not mandate testing, is run with minimal oversight and must contend with a gaggle of lawmakers who doubt scientists and hold themselves out as experts on everything from disease hygiene to pharmacology.”

On the one hand, I know this sort of thing is necessary if we are ever to travel across the galaxy…

If all goes as planned, the Perseverance rover will touch down in the red planet’s once-wet Jezero Crater next February. In addition to deploying a helicopter named Ingenuity and generating oxygen from Mars’s thin, 95 percent carbon-dioxide atmosphere—a useful proof of concept for future crewed missions to Mars—Perseverance will spend the next couple of Earth years searching for biosignatures, or signs of ancient life that thrived before most of Mars’s atmosphere was lost to space and its liquid water boiled away. A decade after the rover starts rolling, NASA hopes, another spacecraft will carry rock and soil samples collected by Perseverance back to Earth for further analysis.

So is this Ukrainian-sourced crapola supposed to part of one of AG Barr’s “bombshell”/”October surprises” he is alleged to be planning to drop to try to sway the election in Trump’s favor?

(The other one (according to something I read at dKos a few days ago) is said to be related to the “Durham Report” - i.e. “indictments” of various folks over the “Obamagate campaign spying” bullshit Trump has been whining about for years now)

The second “bombshell” is supposed to be some of big hoo-ha “Biden-Ukrainian-corruption ‘scandal’”; but if this mysterious-package stuff with Devin Nunes is what it sounds like, it looks like Bomb 2 (like the Durham mess) is going to collapse under the weight of its own bullshit in short order. I mean, seriously: blatantly soliciting foreign “help” (i.e. interference) from some Russian stooge to try to dig “dirt” on some Biden or other? These tools never hear of the word “credibility”???

Scientists have engaged in some interesting thought experiments about how we could know whether, say, 10 or 100 million years ago there was an intelligent species on Earth with a technological civilization. Any artifacts would likely be long gone by now. I think it would come down to discrepancies in the elements and isotopes in geological layers.

Self-Care & Healthy Work Habits for the Pandemic

This is written by Ada Palmer, who is a sci-fi author, a researcher and instructor on the renaissance in Italy, and commentator on all things. She is young, has some immune disorder that cripples her and causes her great pain. She is one of the smartest people I have ever heard of, and so I thought I should pay attention.

Short version: I’m posting today to share two files I made for my university. One is a Healthy Work Habits and Self-Care Guide for the Pandemic Crisis, which many people have said they found helpful and refreshingly different from others that are going around (details below). Some bits are academia specific but most of it is applicable broadly, and I’ve left in the links to university services because it’s likely you can find such services . The other is teaching-specific, a guide to Adapting a Syllabus for the Crisis, not focused on remote teaching, but on the fact that everyone on Earth is already on the verge of breaking down, so it’s vital to do all we can to structure courses and assignments to have a little more leeway, and paths to recover when students (and instructors) do break down.

I want these to help as many people as possible, so please download them, share them, excerpt them, adapt them, make a version for your school or business, use them any way you wish; while credit would be nice my only firm request is that, as you pass them on, you also pass on the wish to pass them on. (If you want .docx files they’re here for self-care and here for syllabus design.)

Yes, I think: I think he tried scheduling it to step on Obama’s eulogy for John Lewis, and when that didn’t happen, he went out and jabbered a bit about how great the economy was going be *when* he was re-elected - or some such shit. The usual.

Thanks. I loved Obama’s eulogy. the man has smarts and class. He said good things about Bush Sr. and Jr. (re-approving the VRA).

He called the Portland protesters “a beehive of TERRORISTS”
He warned of “hundreds of millions of mail-in ballots”
When asked how he can assure parents kids will be safe in school, he said,”Can you assure anybody of anything?”

You know—the usual.

That kind of ignores how much damage he can and will do in the interim.

I still don’t think he finishes the whole term, not when his pathology progression and stress response curves are in such positive reinforcement.

How Far Will Bill Barr Go to Promote a Lie?
The attorney general isn’t afraid to endanger America’s national security.
by Nancy LeTourneau, Wash. Monthly

The question this whole obsession with the Steele dossier raises is why Trump and his enablers continue to lie about how it was used by the investigators. When the Attorney General of the United States and the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee are willing to risk national security in furtherance of a lie, are they simply trying to punish the president’s accusers or are they attempting to cover up something much more serious? Perhaps both.

More like Trump is trying to encourage a mass attempt at voter fraud by his looniest supporters. Expect lots of reports about Republican voters getting busted for voting twice this Fall.
