Stephen Colbert Didn’t Watch the RNC Last Night, and He Feels Much Better

At a time when the NBA is showing more leadership than the RNC, our host found it pointless to watch Republicans spend Night 3 of their convention talking about everything but what’s really going on in America, where 180,000 people have been lost to a pandemic and heavily-armed Rambo wannabes murder people in the streets. #LateShowLIVE #Kenosha #Monologue

“Worried” is perhaps not the right word. But he is being uncharacteristically quiet.

Apropos of nothing: the spelling of Fernandes with an “s” rather than a “z” typically denotes a Portuguese background, and Cabo Verde has a Portguese history.

From wapo

The Secret Service had asked for a room close to the president. But Mar-a-Lago said it was too late. The room was booked. Would agents like a room across the street from the president, instead? … The next time, the Secret Service didn’t take the same risk. It paid Mar-a-Lago to book rooms for two weeks at a time — locking them up before the club could rent them to others, according to newly released records and emails…”

“Federal spending records show that taxpayers have paid Trump’s businesses more than $900,000 since he took office. At least $570,000 came as a result of the president’s travel, according to a Post analysis. Now, new federal spending documents obtained by The Post via a public-records lawsuit give more detail about how the Trump Organization charged the Secret Service — a kind of captive customer, required to follow Trump everywhere

Republicans are still trying to kill us in the name of their religion (conservatism).

Gov. Pete Ricketts is moving most of Nebraska’s counties (including all of the Panhandle) to Phase 4 of his so-called Directed Health Measures (mostly opening everything).

The state has the most number of people hospitalised since early June from Covid-19.

“Protecting hospital capacity has been the goal when making decisions about restrictions,” [Taylor] Gage [governor’s spokesman] said.

Currently, the Panhandle has six hospitalizations, which [Kim] Engel [Panhandle Public Health District director] said she believes is the most hospitalizations at one time since PPHD began tracking cases in March. The Panhandle’s bed availability has also decreased, with PPHD reporting 27% ICU bed availability and 44% hospital bed availability, according to its dashboard. Ventilator availability remains in higher numbers, with 89% availability.

Gage told the Lincoln Journal-Star this plan was developed in consultation with public health district directors. Engel says she was not permitted to ask questions.

The age group with the most hospitalisations in the Panhandle is 40-49.

Case numbers announced by public health officials this week have been in the double digits each day and PPHD officials announced the most active cases at one time during Wednesday’s briefing.

Panhandle expected to move into Phase 4 of directed health measures next month (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

An outline of Phase 4 directed health measures is available on the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services website. In Phase 4, limits on bars, restaurants, childcare facilities, churches and others will be lifted. However, indoor gatherings will remain limited to 75% capacity, though plans for reopening or expanding to new capacity limits must be submitted to the local health departments for all indoor and outdoor locations or venues that hold 500 or more individuals. Events will continue to be required to submit plans to the local health district and include information about meeting social distancing and sanitation guidelines.

We are now suffering a rise in cases thanks to all the people who went through here for the Sturgis rally.

Only four cities or villages in PPHD have no cases (including mine). PPHD has increased the risk on its chart.

Consider this.

During the last four years, with all of the people coming and going from the Trump White House, there is only two individuals who don’t have Trump as a last name (or are married to one) that have remained the entire term. The Trump family obviously because of the family connections, and the profiteering.

One is Vice President Pence, who kind of has a Constitutional requirement.

The other, would be Donald Trump’s closest confidant, and is probably the only one there to implement his personal beliefs as policy.

Of course, I am referring to the white nationalist Stephen Miller.

From PPHD’s so-called dashboard, since late August cases have been rising exponentially again.

Most cases by age: 20-29, then 40-49, then 10-19.
Women remain 2/3 of cases.
All eleven counties in the Panhandle are at “moderate risk.” Grant County (part of PPHD but not in the Panhandle) is at “low.” (They only have one town, and have had no cases.)

Immediately to our south in Weld County, Colorado, they are also failing to keep things under control (2 dead yesterday, 94 total).

Laura is now crossing into Arkansas, and was downgraded by NHC to a tropical storm with 65mph winds. It is moving at 15mph (meaning the winds on the east side are 80mph).

NHC has moved the track north after Laura exits via Virginia/Maryland/DC. Some models indicate it will strengthen back to a tropical storm, and the NHC shows it near or crossing Nova Scotia, then crossing Newfoundland at tropical storm strength and fast forward motion.

Laura is expected to traverse the full length of Kentucky overnight on Friday and Saturday.

re: #143 lawhawk

The UK is CURRENTLY doing a lot better than the US in terms of new cases and COVID-19 deaths when adjusted for population — today Britain reported 1500 new cases for a population of about 68 million compared to the US running total of 44,600 yesterday in a country with about five times the population. There were 12 deaths total in the UK yesterday compared to America’s 1200 or so.

Yes, back in March and April we were burying victims belt-fed, worse even than NYC back then but we’ve generally got a handle on things after a hard lockdown. From what I’ve been able to determine we’ve bent the “excess deaths” curve back down to zero pretty much, a clear indication we’re not killing our citizens at anything like the rate we were doing.

Up here in Scotland where I live we’re generally doing better than England, in part because the Scottish government is taking no prisoners in regard to stamping on outbreaks hard before they explode deep into the population. We’ve got to the point where Scottish schools are open fully for in-classroom attendance and the government believes they can keep them open. They’re totally willing to close the schools down again though if the infection rate can’t be controlled.

Well, the election may not be quite as difficult as we keep thinking (but keep on trucking nonetheless). I was reading an article about the blueing of some red states because people from blue states are moving there. The five states were Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. All of which went to DT in 2016, AZ, NC and FL by rather small margins. (Previously, FL went Obama. Twice.)

So population shift is another of our allies.

York is trying to attack Kamala on how poorly our response to covid19 was and her qualifier that we did worse than all other developed countries.

We’ve done worse than all but 9 other countries.

It should also be noted that most of the European countries already had community spread well before they knew what hit them. It was more prevalent in NY earlier than we knew, but for most of the country, we had a significant head start and still fucked it up. On top of that, a country like Belgium addressed the issue of COVID deaths head on and doesn’t have much of a gap between COVID fatalities and excess deaths. What do those per capita numbers look like if we consider the actual death toll to be north of 200k here?

I remember too well, being a schoolchild 40 years ago, shoved to the back of the classroom, not hearing what the teacher says because my hearing was (and is) shot, not seeing the blackboard because my eyesight was and is likewise gone, and my ADHD making it impossible for me to concentrate for even a second. And being yelled at over and over for NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH!

So, miss me with that VOTE HARDER thing. I did vote in 2016. Straight Democrat since 1988. Appointed official. Yeah, some people should blow it.

If there is anything hinky about how he arrived or left the scene (did the parents give him the gun? Did they drop him off? Did they pick him up?), then I hope they too are in deep shit (criminally and civilly).

The whole thing is like Fred Thompson’s lines in Hunt for Red October. Difference, of course, is that Rittenhouse (and others) is voluntarily showing up where he isn’t needed and shouldn’t be wanted, in order to escalate the situation. Are there tensions and violence when it is just police and protesters? Yes, but people aren’t getting killed.

college too.

I had difficulty seeing when I was in class. Some teachers in elementary school considered me “slow.”

When I was living with my grandparents, my grandmother (a schoolteacher) insisted I was looking for attention when I told her I wanted to see an eye doctor (because my sister had recently been diagnosed with myopia). Because I didn’t let up, she agreed, but searched out the most expensive ophthalmologist in the state to take me to; her argument when she made the appointment was “are you sure? I’m going to make you pay for the appointment if he finds nothing wrong with your eyesight.”

She insisted brown-eyed people could not have bad eyesight. (I guess she never heard of Japan.)

$800 later, I came home with a prescription for new glasses. By the time I was in the Navy, I was already wearing bifocals.

On the plus side, at fifteen I was able to see individual leaves on trees for the first time.

One of the reasons I follow him is that for the past 15 years he’s been one of the better known members of the religious community to which I’ve still got a number of connections - Eastern Orthodox Christianity. (There aren’t that many. And thankfully people like Tom Hanks and George Stephanopoulos seem to make more of a public impression.)
He did famously convert from Roman Catholicism to Orthodoxy after burning out as a reporter covering the Catholic priest abuse scandal in the early aughts. And he makes bank positioning himself as a religious writer who pals around with a lot of conservative Christian leaders of various stripes. He’s got a (justified) reputation as a religious gadfly because he does often contrast the Orthodox Church with the Louisiana Protestant churches of his youth.

I don’t care much for the term vigilante when applied to these situations. A vigilante metes out punishment when a justice system fails to deliver a just ruling.

TL;DR is pretty much in the headline there.

Eight Nebraska football players filed a lawsuit against the Big Ten seeking a reversal of its decision to postpone the fall sports season and greater clarity as to how league leadership arrived at that conclusion.

The World-Herald obtained a copy of the 13-page complaint, which contends the league’s Aug. 11 action to postpone should be overturned because it didn’t follow established procedures in the decision-making process and was “unjustified” based on flawed and misapplied medical information. The suit is being filed in the District Court of Lancaster County.

So, conservatism as it’s always existed in this country. Nothing new; conservatives always get violent when they don’t get their way.

That’s why they have to whatabout violence (such as the Sanders supporter who attacked the Republican Congressional baseball practice), because it is quite rare on what passes for the left in this country.

It’s more out in the open than it has been in the past couple of decades.

Paul Ryan was quick to denounce the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple in his district back in 2012 (same district where Kenosha is). Now, even the token denunciation of hate crimes and violence is no more, for the most part.

Donald Trump throws tantrum during press conference, throws reporters out of the room

When Trump was asked if he’s even seen the video of Wisconsin police shooting a black man in the back seven times, NBC White House correspondent Peter Alexander says that Trump responded by kicking all the reporters out of the room. That’s right, Trump has become so fragile and witless as everything falls apart, he can’t even handle being asked a question about one of the nation’s most pressing and talked-about issues.

Van Jones…. is a single issue person. He’s been palling the same people who got him unfairly kicked out of the White House* to get his goals into law. They’re good ideas, “banning the box”**, but you have to have some self-respect. Granted the Koch family has some good ideas, but do you want to deal with a group whose overall influence has been very much net negative.

Back in the late ’80s, my mom and dad had a shih tzu named Tippy. The didn’t spay her, and she had four puppies with a neighborhood poodle. My parents went about the task of finding good homes for the puppies (you had to be recommended by someone my parents knew). Well, one of the puppies stayed around too long, and the ‘rents became attached. Shortly after they decided to keep the puppy, they came home one day, and the two dog had shredded up some newspapers and tissues. My dad said, “We should call him Ollie because he shreds things.” The name stuck. Tippy and Ollie were the best!

But as an ideology, Trumpism is an inscrutable collection of instincts, insults, rants and tweets. Aspiring GOP leaders will try to bend the material into something comprehensible, but there will be no way to judge who is “right” about what Trump would have done on any issue, aside from immigration. Like a perverse Bible study, Republicans will pore over Trump’s words looking for a divine political message, and they’ll all come away with flawed, irreconcilable interpretations.

Eh, that seems like a fairly standard “portrait pose”. It’s creepy because we know a bit too much about the subjects, but it doesn’t seem that unusual to me.

DAUGHTER SIDE BOOB!!11!!!

re: #327 KGxvi

From what I’ve seen of the convention so far, it seems nearly impossible that neither POTUS nor VPOTUS will escape without contracting the virus.

Then again, Trump’s ability to routinely escape consequences for his actions is almost otherworldly.

There was a point in the finale after Pence’s speech last night where a group of disabled people were escorted and crowded to the edge of the pit where the ‘first families’ were soaking up the love. Trump saw the ‘cripples’ and made a bee line off behind Melania to the other side where the normal people were (starts at about 5:00) and then he made sure to stay 6’ back. Pence was up at the line talking to a crowd of people. No one was wearing masks.

These guys are the most irresponsible assholes. I was watching this segment last night because the MSNBC crew was commenting over the top and we weren’t being subjected to what anyone in the crowd was saying. I went back to it today just to see if it was as bad as I thought it was. It’s so bad. It’s a super spreader and only totally delusional people would be anywhere near it. Pence is really this dangerously stupid.
