IMO it is essential that there be consequences for Trump. If there aren’t, then the decay of the US is already an accomplished fact, and the only things left to see are the tedious details of its downfall into empire and ruin.

When bigots openly declare that their policy of discrimination is justified because those people are bad people… yeah, you know that American culture is deeply, deeply bigoted.

The only glimmer of hope is that the grand jury and maybe a regular courtroom jury will be made up of New Yorkers who know what an awful person Trump is. He’s not the most popular guy there, but he’s got away with so much to this point, it’s also possible he’ll slide again.

As it has been since the inception of this nation: born with slavery and genocide under its ruling patriarchy. A racism that was embedded in its Constitution and that permeated the society until the 1960’s when, finally, blacks began to gain the right to vote and discrimination by race was outlawed, for all public facing businesses and government operations. Unfortunately too many people rejected these changes and wanted to return to the “traditional” culture, where the color of your skin determined your place in the social structure

OK, I can’t recite the docket off the top of my head: but I seem to recall a number of investigations (less indictments/plea deals, more’s the pity) of Trump and his sleazy Organization going back years before he ran for President. Uncle Tom of the original novel was a good guy and a hero; unfortunately the term has become an insult because of the way he has been mischaracterized in popular lore. Vernon Jones seems instead to have become Stephen, the Samuel L. Jackson villain in Django Unchained. But Uncle Tom is the contemporary insult that all recognize.

It was a consent decree. They agreed to the terms set by the DOJ, with DOJ oversight to stop discrimination. Trump was discriminating in violation of multiple federal laws, and the DOJ put a stop to it.

I read Uncle Tom’s Cabin a few years ago and was surprised that the characters weren’t who I expected them to be. For example, Uncle Tom being a Christ-like figure, sacrificing himself for others. There was a lot of Victorian verbiage to work through, but it was a worthwhile read. If you don’t suffocate in the aforementioned Victorian verbiage.

Mumble grumble. Have ATT U-verse and the DVR stopped working. The main TV (which I never use) shows No Signal but the other TVs are operating — but just like ancient days, no way to pause live TV and no access to my recordings. The helpful tech people at ATT are sending me a new box but they have advised me that all my recordings are gone. Sigh.

I had my U-verse fiber optic modem/router fail over the weekend where it only got the power LED flashing and no service lights at all, thus totally knocking out internet, TV and digital phone service. Good news is that they immediately recognized the issue and overnighted a new one. Bad news is I didn’t get the replacement unit until mid-afternoon today (which fortunately does work and required very little reconfiguration from me). That being said, this was really inconvenient since the database IT team I’m on is still on enforced work from home until early summer at the earliest. I had to get special permission to go onsite for the first time since last fall so I could actually get some work done.

Taking him down for the crime-ing he was doing as a businessman before being president is helpful, but if he doesn’t get prosecuted for things he did as president, bad actors will take it as a win for Trump and carte blanche to do all that shit again with no consequences. Probably smarter and more successful the next time. Until the DOJ is taking action rather than local and state authorities, this is just “fine”.

I do understand: the real racists are those who are anti-racist and want children to learn the truth about our racist past; taking down statues of Confederate leaders is a racist act against the Southerners who were fighting for their “heritage”. It is those of us who are Caucasian who suffer the true brunt of racism.

AFAICT, everyone who remains committed to Trump is a danger to the survival of our nation; but they are not the only ones: everyone who fails to support the voting rights legislation is a fellow traveler of the Trump cult, and even if they are vocal in their hostility to Trump himself and the insurrection, they are culpable in widespread attack on voting rights being conducted nationwide by Republican legislators and governors. Neither Cheney nor Kinzinger, the most prominent Trump critics, have expressed any criticism in this Republican assault, nor has either one supported the Democrats’ efforts to expand voting rights.

This is why its so critical to indict and convict Trump of at least some of his crimes before 2024. Ther is no reason, for example, that Trump couldn’t be indicted for directing Michael Cohen to commit the crimes Cohen pled guilty to.

Yeah any or all of these state charges are useful for helping with 2024. To put back the movement decades and stop a 2028 and beyond Trumpite, he needs to be prosecuted for the things he did in office or on the way to it: the things he was impeached for, everything to do with Russia, all the ways he intentionally mishandled COVID, abuse of power during BLM protests, interfering with the count of the 2020 election, and last and certainly not least, attempting a coup. All of his kids and that useless idiot Jared need to go down too. Bill Barr needs to go to prison. Louie Dejoy needs to go to prison. Literally all of them. I can’t imagine him legitimately winning, but as far as I know, several red-states either have, or are trying to pass laws saying they could ignore the state’s popular vote and assign electors to whoever they want.

I can’t imagine him legitimately winning, but as far as I know, several red-states either have, or are trying to pass laws saying they could ignore the state’s popular vote and assign electors to whoever they want.

Basically making legal things that the kooks *thought* they could do and tried to get them to. The game is rigged. If we don’t put him away and hit back with such a surge in 22 and 24 so we can actually have the time and court spots to fix all of this, it’s over.

But this outrageous effort to ignore the popular vote doesn’t aid just Trump, any Republican presidential candidate will benefit from states adopting a law that allows them to select whomever they please, regardless of voter preferences. Unfortunately this is totally constitutional.

hi

One Million Moms (one Christian mom and a whole bunch of Christian men) has launched a boycott against Etsy. Good luck with that, Christian fascists.

They are concerned children looking for Father’s Day presents would stumble upon sex dolls and buy those for Dad.

All conservatives lie. Etsy does not sell sex dolls.

Amazon does sell a nude Velma (of Scooby Doo) portrait (which Robyn Pennacchia helpfully links to—there is a reason she writes for both Wonkette and The Friendly Atheist).

Strangely, One Million Moms hasn’t launched a boycott against Amazon, which sells a whole host of sex toys and nude art.

Especially when he loses his combover privileges.

I hate to say that I have been rendered cynical enough to believe that he will walk: the most optimistic outcome I can foresee is that he will be stripped of his assets and left with a criminal record that renders him ineligible to hold public office ever again.

Extremely local hand rehab news behind the hide bar, since most would find it boring.

My fine muscle control in my hand has improved enough I made a new attempt to use my straight razor.

On my fourth attempt (right after my hand surgery), I was unable to hold it properly and dropped it, slashing my fingers of my left hand and my left wrist.

About an hour ago I tried again (I have not shaved at all since that surgery), and although I wound up with a bunch of nicks on my face, I was able to cut down the overgrowth on my face. I get to report that tomorrow to the occupational therapist.

Same thing with the “Ugly American” character of the novel by that name. He was a saintly figure revered by the local people.

The “Ugly American” of the book title refers to the book’s hero, plain-looking engineer Homer Atkins, whose “calloused and grease-blackened hands always reminded him that he was an ugly man.” Atkins, who lives with the local people, comes to understand their needs, and offers genuinely useful assistance with small-scale projects such as the development of a simple bicycle-powered water pump

.
The plot follows his conflicts with the callous and ignorant US diplomats who oversee his work.

The process for electing a President was never meant to be a fully democratic process under the Constitution.

The GOP have come to realize that relying on the outcome of the popular vote is not going to get the desired results, even with the weight of the Electoral College in their favor, so they are falling back to the old methods of leaving it up to the state legislatures, which they know will guarantee success.

Texas House votes to yank state funding from sports teams that don’t play national anthem at games

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick named the bill one of his legislative priorities after Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, stopped playing the anthem before home games.

The Texas House gave final passage Tuesday to the so-called “Star Spangled Banner Protection Act,” a conservative-backed bill that would require any professional sports teams with contracts with the Texas state government to play the national anthem before the start of a game.

Senate Bill 4 heads next to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk.

House Republicans defeated several proposed amendments along partisan lines, signaling more division on the issue in the lower chamber than was seen in the Senate, which passed the bill last month with overwhelming bipartisan support and only two votes against it.

Crisis of Faith (goes to Juanita Jean’s)

Writer Nick Carraway notes the continuing decline of Christianity in the nation. Mr. Carraway used to sit on a parish board, and notes this phenomenon started long before the Former Guy was elected.

He wanted to get to the bottom of why the church was losing members, and the parish board approached the pastor for permission to conduct exit surveys at church.

The pastor wouldn’t hear of it, insisting people were moving away (despite a boom of construction in their town).

Statistics clearly show that church attendance and faith in general is on the decline. Obviously, for some this is not an issue at all. For some of us it is an issue felt deeply. I certainly can’t speak for everyone, but what I see is a schism between the beliefs that most Christians have and how the faith is practiced in most denominations in the American church. When one can no longer reconcile a benevolent God with all of the hate being spewed by people that call themselves Christian they no longer go.

and

Yet, we have allowed Christianity to be hijacked by conservatives. So, progressives that are also Christian really have three choices. They can stop being progressive and give into the conservative message. They can stop being Christian so they can adhere to a progressive message. The final possibility to continue to be both. However, that requires that they bang their head against both walls. I often feel like that is where I’m at.

The problem with allowing the numbers to get smaller is that those remaining have abandoned progressive ideals. It’s similar to what is going on in the Republican party. Think of it as the Liz Cheney problem. If Cheney gets primaried then gets primaried by a guy that impregnated a 14 year old when he was 18. It seems nice to just assume a Democrat would win, but that’s not likely in Wyoming. So, you replace an ultra conservative with someone more conservative and less reasonable. Multiply that a few dozen times and that’s what’s happened to Congress.

He predicts that churches will go the same way as the Republican Party, only getting worse as good people decide they are done with them.

re: #120 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

One of my soapboxes that many of you are probably tired of reading my prattle: The US is undergoing a worldview collapse as the nominally Christian populace is becoming more diverse, meaning less nominally Christian.

While most people don’t turn into atheists, they become “nones” who hold some belief in a soul (because all of us know we are going to die someday) and some sort of afterlife.

The structural nature of Christianity in a society has, for some 16 centuries now, tended to form theocracies or monarchies bent towards theocracy. Democracy is antithetical to Christian dogma, and the more democratic a society wants to be the less it can adhere to traditional Christian orthopraxy.

The writer you linked wants a progressive reinterpretation of Christianity and many people try that, to some degree of success. But it is an inherently underdog position, a sort of an oddball among monotheism.

Sure, at times the most progressive people in the US were also religious (famously so, the abolitionists.) But their progress-minded ideals tended to be singular issues (e.g., slavery.)

Because some of the colonies that became the US were noted for their religious tolerance (Pennsylvania) the US has a history of needing to allow variations in beliefs. But the parameters American society has put on itself are pretty tight.

See the outlawing of polygamy, for example, though various religions allow it, or even encourage it.

So the weakening of the traditional Christian societal structures in the US is causing the wringing of hands of many.

MAGAheads are among those who are driven by the fear of losing their religion.

Our politics will be defined by this issue for decades to come.

128
Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  May 26, 2021 • 6:01:24am

The writer at Juanita Jean’s references an article from John Pavlovitz. Mr. Pavlovitz is a pastor.

If MAGA Christianity is Christianity—I’m Not a Christian and Neither is Jesus (May 21)

If being a Christian means embracing a man who boasted that he could grab women by the genitalia, I’m out.
If being a Christian means denying the votes of people of color or justifying their executions at traffic stops, I’ll pass.
If being a Christian means nurturing mindless conspiracies and shunning safeguards and stoking hate crimes, I’m gonna opt out.
If being a Christian means pretending a deadly terrorist attack on our Capitol was just a “group of tourists,” I denounce it as a my former religion.

Interestingly, Jodo Shinshu is growing, albeit modestly, in Portland, Oregon. This is a traditionally Japanese sect of Pure Land Buddhism, but as a friend of mine noted (she was going there routinely before the pandemic), the congregation is not only expanding, but far more diverse as well. The Buddhist Churches of America has also been busy doing their outreach work, so that might help account for it. But yes, America is getting more religiously diverse, and I’m sure the Bible-thumpers feel particularly threatened by this.

I don’t need to hear from Republican propagandists like Rubio that the Coronavirus was started in a lab. If this is a question for scientists, then I’ll wait to hear from them on the lab issue. Rubio will never acknowledge how badly and criminally Trump mishandled the pandemic. He’s simply looking for someone else to blame for the 500,000 plus deaths under Trump’s watch.

They want to get someone as corrupt as Trump but whom they think they can control. The problem is, they won’t be able to control a corrupt president because they realize how much power they actually have once in office. Trump had no idea what he could get away with until he started…then all bets were off and he crimed with impunity.

As a lifetime resident of Illinois, I am accustomed to our chief executives being sent to prisons for crimes committed before being governor (Ryan), while they were governor(Kerner and Blagoyevich), and after they left the office (Walker), but all of them tried to do the right thing during their term in office. They weren’t grifters whose goal was to enrich themselves, while ignoring the well-being of the citizens of their state. Blagoyevich may have been a total idiot but he wasn’t vicious or cruel. It benefits a nation to throw a miscreant top official in jail as a warning that no one is above the law.

That would be just fine with the GOP.

They control a majority of state legislatures.

Each state gets one vote, so New York and California have just as many votes as Wyoming and North Dakota, just as our Founding Fathers foresaw it…

re: #102 Patricia Kayden

I don’t understand how that is democratic or constitutional at all. Then why bother to vote then? Just let the GOP select the President.

The Constitution only specifies that the legislatures select the electors; there is nothing that requires an election at all. However it’s not one vote per state, it’s the number of electoral votes per state. So the larger states will continue to get more votes, just not proportionately so.

We need to be clear on one thing: the possibility that covid-19 escaped from a lab is real (though definitely not proven). The nonsense that Rubio et al. are pushing is that covid-19 was created in a lab, and that’s the one that reputable scientists do not entertain.

The people who peddle the “Chinese virus” silliness do not distinguish these (intentionally? or they’re just not bright enough?), so I would argue that it’s best to assume they mean it was lab created and laugh them out of the public arena.

It’s important that no matter whether they agree on it being an intentional release or an “accident,” the same point remains: The virus was artificial in nature, either engineered or through “weaponizing” naturally-occurring strains, and thus China is responsible for the pandemic. And any investigation that concludes otherwise is a “cover-up” to avoid angering the Chinese government.

The doc dilated my throat anyway, there was a small stricture and he was there and I gave permission to do it if he felt it needed to be done. They found two polyps in my intestines, those were removed and biopsies sent off. But no internal bleeding was found, which they worried about since I’m anemic. What to Know

A bad apple is generally understood to refer to someone who creates problems for other people, and whose actions or behaviors negatively influence the larger group. The phrase is often interpreted erroneously by implying that a bad apple is not representative of the whole, when in fact the term stems from the larger phrase “one bad apple can spoil the barrel,” which suggests that the negativity is not an isolated incident.

These fucking assholes:

Rep. Frank Ryan, R-Lebanon County, introduced the bill on burial options because of his own experience after losing a child, a story he has shared previously.

He said he was “asking the ladies in the room” to “recognize how men feel.”

He said his bill is optional and gives families a chance at closure after losing a baby, he said.

“This is about giving choice to those people whose faith says that life begins at conception,” Ryan said.

Frankel argued that Ryan’s bill mandates cremation or burial and does not make it optional after abortion or miscarriage. To get a burial, a death certificate would also be required for abortions and miscarriages.

I’m no funeral expert, but don’t folks already have the option of doing something to memorialize an unborn child if they want?? (Full disclosure: My wife miscarried back in 2013. We hadn’t even realized she was pregnant yet)

There’s plenty of weird sex stuff IN THE BIBLE as it so happens.

14 “But she carried her prostitution still further. She saw men portrayed on a wall, figures of Chaldeans[a] portrayed in red, 15 with belts around their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like Babylonian chariot officers, natives of Chaldea. 16 As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. 17 Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. After she had been defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust. 18 When she carried on her prostitution openly and exposed her naked body, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister. 19 Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she was a prostitute in Egypt. 20 There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. 21 So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled.”

- Ezekiel, 23: 14-21

Fun statistical fact totally unrelated to anything else happening in national news today: Grand Juries return indictments on between 95-99% of the cases they’re empaneled to review.

I testified before a federal grand jury, and what struck me was the grand jurors are allowed to ask questions of the witness after the AUSA finished his questioning.

She was a pretty good writer who once cared about what was right, but now all she can do is derp about “cancel culture” and says the Democrats need to fall to end it, as if the party was dictating the demand that bigots be fired, and as if the alternative wasn’t fascism.

She lost her sane followers, which was most of them, and has nuts encouraging the derp now, so is locked in to seeking the approval of idiots. I fully gave up on her today.

Caitlyn Jenner Claims She Can Take On ‘Big Tech’s Woke Cancel Culture’ Since She Beat The Soviets

In the midst of her gubernatorial campaign in California, Republican Caitlyn Jenner claimed she would be able to take on the “woke cancel culture” and Silicon Valley after comparing it to the Soviet Union.

She posted of her prowess on Twitter.

Jenner reasoned, “I took on the Soviet Union and won”—not referring to political or military experience but her win at the 1976 Olympics where she won the gold medal in the decathlon.

Jenner said:

“In 1976 I took on the Soviet Union and won. Today Silicon Valley’s mono-culture seems to espouse the same values. I will take on Big Tech’s woke cancel culture and win for all of California and America.”

However, Jenner failed to mention any plans to address the issues mentioned—beyond touting her decades old Olympic win.

It’s important that no matter whether they agree on it being an intentional release or an “accident,” the same point remains: The virus was artificial in nature, either engineered or through “weaponizing” naturally-occurring strains, and thus China is responsible for the pandemic. And any investigation that concludes otherwise is a “cover-up” to avoid angering the Chinese government.

well, the chinese are currently involved in a coverup, so they aren’t really helping matters.
