LYRICS:
I am a child in these hills
I am away, I am alone
I am a child in these hills
And looking for water
And looking for life

Who will show me the river
And ask me my name
Is there nobody here who will do that
Well, I have come to these hills
I will come to the river
As I choose to be gone
From the house of my father
I am a child in these hills
I am a child

Chased from the gates of the city
Where no one had touched me
I am away, I am alone
I am a child in these hills
And looking for water
And looking for life

Who will show me the river
And ask me my name
Is there nobody here who’ll do that
Well I have come to these hills
I will come to the river
As I choose to be gone
From the house of my father
I am a child in these hills
I am a child

Unfortunately, too many of these anti-vax fanatics survive their bout with their pro-Covid ideology and platform intact. Only if the Grim Reaper takes more of them by Covid will we have a chance at defeating this foe, assuming it’s not too late already.

Yes, Loudoun is the center of the NoVa culture wars right now.. And there is a lot of dishonesty coming from the GQP as they try to win the election at any cost.

I admit that I am surprised that Prince William County hasn’t joined in the wingnut chorus, though.

Iirc, you are from the Fredricksburg area. How are things going down there. Iirc, there were some culture wars in neighboring counties as well.

Yeah, the city is pretty reliably blue, but the counties are solid red. The Fredericksburg Democratic Committee is a hot mess - has been for years. They sent out an email about registering to work the polls on Tuesday, with the promise that they’d reply and let you know where and when to report. Haven’t heard boo from them. I wish I could say I was surprised. When I worked the polls in 2016 people were asking for stickers, sample ballots, etc that the response was, “why would you want those?”. Doesn’t do much to inspire confidence. Luckily FXBG has a large Black community and they vote.

I remember being eight or nine years old and taught about ghettoes, BUT BUT BUT that was part of a special program for the few gifted and talented students in my elementary school. We got exposed to a lot of different things as a result—I remember going to see an opera in San Francisco as part of the program. But again, we were gifted and talented students and it wasn’t like I wasn’t reading about ghettoes in the newspaper every afternoon after I came home from school. (Yes, yes, I was weird. Still am.)

Yes, the Fairfax Dem’s used to be that way. This year they seem a little better. I have heard from them a bunch of times. Although mostly they want donations. The State and National did send out invites to attend when, variously, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker were at rallies in NoVa.

I have not looked recently, but I expect that the Charlottesville area is similar to Fredricksburg, blue city and red county. TargetPractice has discussed the Tidewater area earlier. I am kind of wondering about the Richmond area, as I have not heard anything about it up until now.

Totalitarian states like Russia and China banned Facebook and other hate-fest websites years ago in what seems now like a wise move.

It remains to be seen if a barely-functioning democracy here in the US can survive with these sort of corporations directly profiting from marginalizing, organizing mayhem and bloodshed, and even broadcasting intentions of genocide.

It may be that with modern technology democracy, as it traditionally was thought of, is not compatible with the new reality where far flung militant groups can organize as never before and wacked-out conspiracies infest the minds of an entitled dominant demographic. I hope I’m wrong but the era of democracy seems to be coming to an end. And it most definitely will as Republicans gain more and more power.

I can see that happening. I was very immersed in my son’s education, simply because I had no other choice. I spent a lot of time volunteering during class and being in the classroom when my son was in regular classes outside the special education program. The standard curriculum didn’t start with history lessons (beyond stuff like who Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt were, why we celebrate 7/4 etc) until grade 5. Most districts focus on basics before adding in history, science, etc. Gifted programs are few and far between here until high school. Yay Georgia.

Browne Prevails In Defamation Disputes | Billboard

A written apology has been added to the beginning of the program. It states: “In a previous version of this program, we incorrectly reported an alleged incident involving singer Jackson Browne and actress Daryl Hannah. Mr. Browne has always denied that such an incident occurred, and local authorities have reported to the media that based upon their investigation, the incident previously reported in our program did not occur. We have deleted that material from our program, and we apologize to Mr. Browne for its inclusion.”

Heh, While looking up that WBUR article on Michael Dukakis and Turkey soup, I learned that tomorrow is the last day of “Massachusetts’ Bat Week”:

It’s still not too late to celebrate Bat Week in Massachusetts.

…snip…

Last year, MassWildlife launched a new effort to construct and install bat houses, which can be an important tool in supporting bat survival. MassWildlife has installed 30 bat houses on Wildlife Management Areas and private lands and more will be installed over the next year.

It can take up to two years for bats to move into a bat house, and even then, typically only about 15% of bat houses are ever occupied.

Sierra Hotel Aeronautics

A famous photograph showing test pilot George Aird ejecting from a pre-production example of the English Electric Lightning fighter in September 1962.
Fortunately the pilot survived after coming down in a greenhouse full of tomatoes. He suffered multiple breaks of his limbs and cuts from the shower of glass that rained down on him after going through the roof of the greenhouse.

The photo was taken by a local teenager named Jim Meade. He is still with us and reportedly carries a print in his wallet.

People are constantly asking how the tractor driver knew to turn around at that exact instant. The noise of the ejection seat firing is one possibility. The Lightning is also a very loud aircraft even with the throttles cut. The most likely explanation though is photographer Jim Meade yelling, “HOLY FUCK! LOOK AT THAT!”

So many of us were infuriated by that Wisconsin judge on the Rittenhouse case, I thought you might want to read Nick Carraway’s essay on it, from JuanitaJean’s:

The Lights may be visible on Saturday night from Portland, Oregon, to New York City and as far south as Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Raleigh, North Carolina, weather permitting, according to the University of Alaska’s Geophysical Institute.

The Institute forecasts auroral activity to also be high in parts of Europe, including Aberdeen, Scotland, St. Petersburg, Russia, Dublin and Hamburg, weather permitting.

Shoot. Overcast and raining here in lower NH. I have to walk the dog later, so I’ll keep an eye out anyway. Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe tonight will finally be the night I get to see it. The problem is that the hill I live on the side of slopes up to the north, so the horizon is really high.

On my afternoon dog walk today we went by an elementary school that had a scarecrow figure in front of the school. My dog went ballistic at the “stranger” in our path. The odd thing is that she rarely goes ballistic at people. She just lunges at other dogs. Maybe she was upset by its artifice/unnaturalness in human form?

Here’s the aurora prediction for North America.

We have a good shot of seeing the event if the clouds disappear. Unfortunately, up here, the best viewing is usually between 0100 and 0300 AM. And the temp will be about 28 degrees F.

AURORA FORECAST

Sunday night is also predicted to be another good night to see the lights.
