LIVIN’ FOR THE ONES
(Lyrics: Bonnie Raitt | Music: George Marinelli)

I can barely raise my head off the pillow
Some days I never get out of bed
I start out with the best of intentions
And then shuck it instead

I don’t think we’ll get back how we use to
No use in tryin’ to measure the loss
We better start gettin’ used to it
And damn the cost

Go ahead and ask me
How I make it through
Only way I know is to
Keep

Livin’ for the ones (Ones who didn’t make it)
Livin’ for the ones (Ones who didn’t make it)
Keep livin’ for the ones (Ones who didn’t make it)
Livin’ for the ones

I’m livin’ for the ones who didn’t make it
Cut down through no fault of their own
Just keep ‘em in mind, all the chances denied
If you ever start to bitch and moan

Just remember the ones who won’t ever
Feel the sun on their faces again
Watch their grandkids collide, let it
Break you inside
Maybe this’ll be the way you mend

Go ahead and ask me
How I make it through
Only way I know is
Keep

Livin’ for the ones (Ones who didn’t make it)
Livin’ for the ones (Ones who didn’t make it)
Keep livin’ for the ones (Ones who didn’t make it)

re: #9 Punish Domestic Terrorists

I am a person who believes in leading with kindness whenever possible. Unfortunately, that is seen as a weakness, and a signal to assholes that they won’t be held to account for the damage they do. I have been in the position of having to fight back to save my life. Nice certainly doesn’t work in that case. What we are dealing with are people who will not stop until they are stopped. Following the rules and being civil and kind does not work unless there are consequences attached. Making nice is stupid when you are facing something intent on destroying you and everything you love.

For years my family went to Assateague Maryland a day or two when we stayed at Fenwick Island Delaware. That’s where the wild horses are and there are no lifeguards or even flags to warn about rip tides/currents and just dangerous surf. Basically you are on your own. And not a lot of people around. Bush and sand and surf and horses you can smell before you see them.

Most know. Some don’t.
My brother in law and I had to scream at a family of dolts to LOOK AT YOUR FUCKING KID who was going south and east with each passing wave once.
My kids knew and respected rip tides and knew how to handle them because we taught them.

Yep!

Served through two world wars and a revolution, plus a “Special Operation”.

It apparently runs some mini-submersibles.

From the wiki article:
“In April 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the ship was deployed after the sinking of the Moskva. The Moskva sank 80 miles (130 km) off the coast from Odessa in 45 to 50 metres (148 to 164 ft) of water. The size of the Moskva, which sank as one piece, makes bringing it to the surface impossible. Kommuna will assist in recovering weapons, bodies, and other sensitive material that foreign powers might be interested in.”

The song “Worry No More” by Amos Lee has the following line: “Evan’s keys on green to blue are never gray.” The best I can figure out is that it’s referring to Bill Evans playing on the Miles Davis Album Kind of Blue. One of the songs is called “Blue in Green.” Whether or not it’s actually meant to refer to it, I bought the Davis album because I still like buying CDs.

Well, I lived around the corner from this museum for the better part of the 1980s, and I had NO IDEA that tucked behind the main house was slave quarters.

Rediscovered slave quarters in West Campus help tell the story of urban enslavement in Austin

When Joe McGill visits Austin this weekend, he won’t be sleeping in a hotel or Airbnb, as most travelers do. Instead, he’ll unfurl a sleeping bag on the floor of a small 167-year-old stone building and spend the night in what’s believed to be the only intact slave quarters left in Austin.

“That’s what I do,” he said. “I find slave dwellings around the nation, and I ask the owners if I can spend the night in these spaces.”

McGill is the founder of The Slave Dwelling Project. He travels the country to sleep in places where enslaved people once lived in order to draw attention to these spaces and the history of slavery in the U.S. He also hosts presentations and discussions on racism and racial equity that are open to the public. The project started 12 years ago when McGill, who does preservation work in South Carolina, noticed how historic sites, like plantations or estates, often leave out the stories of the enslaved people who lived there.

“They would tell the stories of the enslavers, but very seldom would they tell the stories of those they enslaved,” he said. “And when they started telling their story, it was from the angle of the enslavers. … So, The Slave Dwelling Project gives the enslaved people a voice and tells the story from their perspectives.”

This weekend, McGill is staying at the slave quarters located at the Neill-Cochran House Museum, a Greek Revival house built in 1856 that now hosts art and Austin history exhibits. Hundreds of UT Austin students walk by the site daily. Located on San Gabriel Street in the heart of West Campus, the museum is surrounded by student apartment complexes and sorority and fraternity houses.

The Neill-Cochran House is one of Austin’s oldest homes, but it was only in recent years that the museum staff discovered the two-story outbuilding behind the main house was originally used to house enslaved people. Now, the Neill-Cochran House is trying to reincorporate that history into the museum’s narrative — and the story of Austin as a whole.

That’s the fun thing about the microprocessor revolution, electronics that once were so large and cumbersome that they couldn’t be put anywhere smaller than a garage now can fit on your dashboard or in your pocket. So that even 110+ old ships can have some of the finer bits of modern tech without it taking up too much space.

Yep. One of the benefits of not being a combat ship is that she doesn’t need to receive regular upgrades to remain combat effective, just new equipment when the old stuff wears out.

My cell is routinely overrun with texts from various candidates, usually Democrats but occasionally Republicans, pleading for money, most of which I ignore. Evan McMillan has been sending requests that I’ve promptly deleted but Saturday he texted that Utah Democrats are supporting him — and so this time I responded with a small donation. Apparently Democrats decided that it was preferable not to split the anti-Trump vote. He may be more conservative than I’d like but he is sane.

Being sane and not a traitor supporting the overthrow of our democracy are the minimum requirements — and most Republicans fail to meet that low bar. McMullin is very conservative, far more conservative than Manchin, but hopefully he will vote for Schumer as Senate Majority Leader. If this were a pre-Trump world, I would never support him. But the main issue is saving our democracy — once that is accomplished and the Trump/Gingrich/McConnell poison is purged, we can revert to choosing candidates based on policies. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening any time in the next several election cycles.

Unfortunately, the flip side to that is McMullin is also another vote against anything remotely progressive, meaning Dems continue to look useless and/or corporate-aligned. Yeah, Repubs are fascist or fascist-adjacent, but they’re also getting things done that not only please their own voter base but also usually have some appeal to those “independent” voters who tend to fark us over when we don’t have a toxic shitstain like Trump on the ballot to run against. Hell, even when they’re not in power, the Dem leadership will burn precious time and political capital trying to win even a handful of their votes on a bill just to proclaim it “bipartisan.”

The fatal flaw in the “sane party” strategy is best exemplified by this past gubernatorial race in VA, where the VA GQP ran a milquetoast candidate who was so non-threatening that conservative Dems were willing to “give him a chance.” No matter how hard our own white bread mayonnaise sandwich of a candidate tried, he could not convince voters that a vote for the Repub was a vote for Trump/fascism. But the Repub managed to convince voters that Dem leadership had mishandled the pandemic, was mishandling the recovery, and was actively working to override their “parental rights” when it came to everything from education to public safety.

Or… they wanted it to get out of hand, so they’d have “plausible justification” to invoke the insurrection act, and declare martial law.

ETA I think they were hoping a member of congress, or several, would die.

I think the more likely scenario is that Trump and a few co-conspirators heard about the MAGAt “militias” planning for violence on 1/6 to “Stop the Steal” and saw an opportunity in that. As other Lizards have noted, there seemed to be some measure of anticipation on the part of persons in the WH and Congress for Antifa/BLM to show up in force to counter-protest. So the decision was made to basically recreate the conditions that lead to Charlottesville: minimal police presence, no military presence whatsoever, and orders to avoid direct confrontation with protestors.

The expectation was that when the MAGAts left Donny’s little rally all tooled up, they’d run straight into the counter-protestors and immediately violence would ensue. Some of it might leak into Congress, aided by the “guided tours” that pointed out the various weak points in the Capital Building, but there was no plan for members of Congress to be directly threatened. They expected that the Secret Service or Capital Police would have ushered the members of Congress out the back door as soon as the violence began, with no intention of returning until “order is restored.” Trump might allow this to go on for an hour or so, then the order would go out to deploy the NG and call Mayor Bowser to demand as many cops as she could spare in riot gear to descend upon Capital Hill.

What would follow would look like the ‘68 Dem Convention all over again, with MAGAts and Antifa alike being bludgeoned with truncheons, shot with rubber bullets, and hit with tear gas. Anybody who “resisted” would be shoved into a zip-tie and hauled off to the nearest jail, even those who’d played no part in the violence but had the misfortune of being near the scrum. While this was going on, Trump would haul his corpulent ass before the cameras to point the finger at Antifa, to accuse them of orchestrating the violence to stop the “peaceful protestors” that had come to support him and his effort to “Stop the Steal.” And that he’d be ordering the DOJ to immediate begin an investigation into the group with the goal of proving once and for all that they were “terrorists” intent on disrupting our democracy. There wouldn’t be an invocation of the Insurrection Act immediately, but he’d hedge on that by suggesting that if the DOJ found evidence that Antifa intended more violence and more disruption, then he would invoke it in order to “bring them to justice.”

No matter how close them come, and no matter how IN YOUR FACE truth is, they just can’t make themselves get it.

The contrast was startling. In New York, António Guterres, the UN secretary general, launched a belated, desperately needed initiative to halt the war in Ukraine. “At this time of great peril and consequence, he [Guterres] would like to discuss urgent steps to bring about peace,” his spokesman said. The UN chief, he revealed, was proposing immediate, in-person talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv.

At roughly the same time as this hopeful development unfolded, the UK’s Boris Johnson, riding a “Partygate” getaway plane to India, was colourfully rubbishing peace efforts. Putin, he claimed, was an untrustworthy reptile. “I really don’t see how the Ukrainians can easily sit down and come to some kind of accommodation. How can you negotiate with a crocodile when it’s got your leg in its jaws?” Johnson asked.

This gaping disconnect is doubly disturbing. It suggests lack of coordination between the UN chief and a permanent member of the UN security council on how best to proceed. It also highlights a wider problem: diverging, sometimes opposing, occasionally self-serving, approaches to the crisis by western leaders who have hitherto trumpeted their unity of purpose.

The outrage in western countries sparked by Putin’s 24 February invasion is starting to fade. Likewise the burst of optimism that followed Ukraine’s success in repelling the Russian advance around Kyiv. Now, as Moscow begins a huge, slow-motion offensive in the east, concern grows that this conflict has no end-point and that the enormous economic and human damage that results may be permanent - and global.

“Power is intoxicating, its pursuit revealing of character but sometimes debilitating; House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is Exhibit A. In his ceaseless drive to become the next speaker of the House, he has demonstrated weakness, hypocrisy and a willingness to lie to save his skin…”

“This is what the Republican Party in the House of Representatives now stands for — the abandonment of a principled conservative leader and the possible elevation of a politician whose abiding principle is the pursuit of power, one who has bent and bowed before a former president whose actions he denounced and knew were wrong.”

Inflation was out of control before the war in Ukraine. It was mostly caused by covid related supply chain issues, too much stimulus, and corporate profiteering. Not sure how you can justify saying that Putin was responsible for 70% of it. Putin’s not even responsible for 70% of the inflation in energy prices.

Some of the new systems, such as the French Ceasar also have an autoloader. They can setup using gps, get a target located by gps, computer calculate the firing solution, configure and load the ammunition, fire multiple rounds and then scoot in a couple of minutes. Long before the Russian counter-battery firing can react.

Saw a couple of CEASARs coming down the autoroute the day before yesterday, probably part of the withdrawal from Mali.

In the 1980’s that set of activities would have taken my battery a couple of hours […] Since the Russians are still largely using stuff from that period, and based upon the Soviet WW2 experience, I expect that their current reaction time is closer to my 1980’s experience.

Maybe, maybe not. If you remember the story about the Ukrainian team using drones for coordinating attacks on the Russians they said they had problems with some commercial drones, within minutes of turning them on the Russians detected them and were dropping artillery on them.

looks like this:

But Kessler calculated that 70 percent of the February to March inflation increase was attributable to an increase in energy prices and decided that’s what Biden meant.

In all, he assessed, “Biden’s math is defensible … but at the same time, ordinary people might certainly have assumed he was referring to the 12-month inflation rate, not the one-month figure.”

looks like this:

I guess it’s more defensible if you slice it to that thinly, though still doesn’t sound correct.
The war in Ukraine is not responsible for most of today’s energy price increase above historical average prices. Underproduction after price went negative in 2020 and the inability of some OPEC countries to even meet their quota is more responsible for oil price increases than Russia’s war.
Without the war we’d still have oil in the 80s.

I read the latest John Sandford novel, The Investigator about a MAGA militia that takes over a small Texas border town. He gives them more intellect and logistical skills than they have demonstrated in real life.

I read that, too. I think he was trying to be somewhat politically correct (he’s a pretty good guy IRL) and not making it specifically a MAGA thing (while making it’s MAGA thing 😂).

What did you think of Letty’s first outing?

I saw that video on Friday, it was part of a weekly show on YT by these two guys (one South African, one American) who are former residents of China, with Chinese spouses and children. The video was so new at that point they went with auto translation rather than doing it themselves, so they admit the translation is kinda crap. Starts here and goes for about six minutes.

I doubt she was involved in this particular event but what if someone gave her the bombs, and directed her on exactly what to do, while telling her of the important role she was playing in preserving the Trump presidency. Believing in her “historical” part might be enough to secure her active participation in this part of the plot.

While I would love for MTG to have been the suspicious figure, it would take something more conclusive than the suspect and MTG appearing to wear shoes of the same make (on blurry video footage taken from a distance) and the claim that they have similar walks. My Dad used to claim that I walk like George Jefferson bopping into the deluxe apartment (building) on the East Side, and I am most assuredly not Sherman Hemsley.

Could be worse.

“Share and Enjoy” is, of course, the company motto of the hugely successful Sirius Cybernetics Corporation Complaints division, which now covers the major land masses of three medium sized planets and is the only part of the Corporation to have shown a consistent profit in recent years.

The motto stands - or rather stood - in three mile high illuminated letters near the Complaints Department spaceport on Eadrax - “Share and Enjoy”. Unfortunately its weight was such that shortly after it was erected, the ground beneath the letters caved in and they dropped for nearly half their length through the underground offices of many talented young complaints executives - now deceased. The protruding upper halves of the letters now appear, in the local language, to read “Go stick your head in a pig”, and are no longer illuminated, except at times of special celebration.

An elderly Italian man living in New Jersey wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was difficult work. His only son, Vincent, had always helped him, but now he was in prison. The old man wrote in his next letter to his son and described his problem.
Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won’t be planting tomatoes this year because I’m getting too old to dig the garden. I know if you were here you would be happy to dig my garden like the old days.
Love Papa

His son wrote:
Dear Pop,
Don’t dig up the garden. That’s where all the bodies are buried.
Love Vinnie

At 4 a.m. the next morning the FBI and local police arrived and dug up the entire yard and finding nothing left.

The old man received another letter the next day:
Dear Pop,
Plant your tomatoes now. It is the best I can do this year.
Love Vinnie

On April 5, the 55-year-old father, called 911, asking for medical attention. He apparently told dispatchers he that he had two seizures a couple days before which left him unable to move, and that his son did not help him.

According to an arrest report, his son, 22-year-old Jonathan Woods, had locked his father in his room for about eight months.

When police arrived, they were advised by firefighters that the residence was a health hazard, and that the conditions inside — specifically the victim’s bedroom — were “uninhabitable.”

Inside the room, deputies reported seeing feces covering the walls, floors, and bed. First responders said when they were removing the victim, cockroaches had crawled out from underneath him.

snip and skipping over the rest of the gruesome parts

“He began to cry and stated that he did not want to get [his son] in trouble, but that he just couldn’t live that way he was living anymore,” it reads. “He stated that he was afraid that he would die if he continued to live in the conditions he was living.”

Woods and his girlfriend reportedly admitted they felt they should’ve taken better care of him, but “did not know how bad things were.”

Gait (and size, and shoes) is enough to suggest a suspect worthy of further investigation. It’s not even close to solid evidence sufficient for conviction.
